I made it through 17 seconds of that song.

so who are they going to trade to make room for him in the outfield?

QUOTE (smalls2598 @ Nov 10, 2010 -> 01:31 PM) Mark Kotsay's Baseball-reference.com page sponsorship: Ironically, the sponsor's name is "Jim Thome". link I imagine that is probably someone over at SSS

Can we sticky this? That'd be sweet. It's like April Fools 5 months early!

QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Nov 9, 2010 -> 06:27 PM) I think the fact that Kotsay has knowledge of this information is a bad sign. I mean, it could easily be common knowledge in the clubhouse, but I'm guessing he's in the works for next year... I strongly doubt it. I think the better guess would be that those were the bats they were inquiring about at the deadline (the Giants were pretty far back, far enough that I was suggesting the Sox look at Uribe).

QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Nov 9, 2010 -> 04:54 PM) Thanks for everything Paulie. I don't think that's really anything ground breaking...the average fan could figure that AJ is more likely to come back than Konerko.

I for one am glad that Kotsay did not mention Kotsay by name when he brought up left handed bats.

QUOTE (Cali @ Nov 9, 2010 -> 01:59 PM) Watching a re-run of the game, that Twins prospect Ben Revere has PIRANHA!!11 written all over him. A little .260 against the league .330 against the Sox with gold glove D in a rookie season.... He looks like Denard Span at his very best, and is probably a 4th outfielder but with the plate discipline and speed to start. Aaron Hicks is of bigger concern. He looks like a legitimate player.

If you had to bet on one signing of a new player.....

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 9, 2010 -> 02:37 PM) Yes, a bigger need. I could live with Viciedo filling the 1b/DH role and a cheap additional DH (or RF) signing to cover the additional spot, but I dread going into this season with something less reliable than Jenks in the closer's spot. I would say that Thornton, Sale, and Santos are all more reliable then Jenks. Gregory Infante is probably more reliable then Jenks. s***, Tony Pena is probably more reliable then Jenks. Jenks is awful. -
The worst part about this is that Jeter didn't even earn it with his bat this year. Hopefully Jeter embarasses himself offensively next year and is forced to retire, because this is an absolute joke. What I would suggest everyone here does is to email one writer who votes for these awards probably once a week or until they respond, and ask them why they voted for Jeter and didn't vote for anyone else, because quite frankly this is hogwash.

QUOTE (dpd9189 @ Nov 9, 2010 -> 11:49 AM) Cubs are probably 2-3 years away from being a real contender again. However Bruce Levine just reported that they're preparing to make a serious push for Adrian Gonzalez. That's a move that would speed things up. They are also preparing to sign Adam Dunn and any number of other moves. They don't have the resources to do it. There are very few players the Cubs fan trade to the Padres for Adrian Gonzalez that make any sense for the Cubs in the long run. Bruce Levine is not reputable at all.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 9, 2010 -> 07:33 AM) The AL still owns the NL in interleague record, which is the only stat with enough sample size to be meaningful here (All Star games and WS are just too chance-ridden). But, it does appear in the past couple years that the gap is closing a bit. They probably aren't as far apart as they were. This pretty much nails it on the head.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Nov 8, 2010 -> 11:13 PM) My 4 year old son: Dad, can I play Nick Jr. on the computer? Me: No not right now. I'm busy. Son: But I don't want you to be busy. Me: I know, but I have something to do. I'm helping my friend right now. Son: I can't let you be busy. I need you to go upstairs, and think about sharing.

QUOTE (rockren @ Nov 9, 2010 -> 12:00 AM) This is a bigger decision than people think. Look at what happened to Joba Chamberlain. They decided to bring him out of the pen to start his career and he was dynamite. I was at the Cell in '08 when he blew Konerko and Thome away without any trouble (a few 99 mph fastballs topped off with one of the nastier sliders I've ever seen). Sure Joba eventually lost that game to a walk off single to everyone's hero, Joe Crede. Anyway- you all all know the history since and New York decided to make Joba a starter...that didn't go so well. Everyone in the Yankee organization assumed they could just make him a reliever again and guess what? He's nowhere near what he was coming out of the pen before. I wouldn't call Joba's shot at becoming an elite reliever again over...but people fear he could be ruined. If the WSox drafted Sale as a future starter, then they need to start him in AAA as a starter if he isn't starting in the big leagues. If they decided to change their minds and use him as a reliever- then they need to mold him as a potential set-up man and groom him to be a closer in the making. The WSox can't afford to be in between on this decision. I'm all for developing him as a starter. The problem with this is that you are looking at one isolated incident and using it as basis for the White Sox doing the same thing with Chris Sale. Beyond that, as with any reliever, sample size is a huge concern, and 71 IP for Joba Chamberlain isn't enough to discern that he is suddenly a bad reliever. He had a 2.98 FIP, 3.34 xFIP, and a 0.86 WPA, and he was especially hurt by 5 games... May 16 - 0.2 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K May 18 - 1 IP, 4 H, 3 ER (4 R) May 29 - 0.1 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 1 K June 17 - 0 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 1 BB July 10 - 1 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 1 BB Total - 5 G, 3 IP, 15 H, 17 ER, 4 BB, 2 K That's going to destroy anyone's season. His line, minus those 5 games - 68 G, 68.2 IP, 2.36 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 9.83 K/9, 2.46 BB/9, 4.17 K/BB. You obviously can't specifically cherry pick statistics like this, but you also can't look at a reliever's raw numbers and automatically assume that they were poor, because there can be a handful of bad outings that really trash a relievers' season numbers when he has pitched a lot better than that. (Joba would be a great buy low candidate too if the Yankees are down on him at all)

QUOTE (GREEDY @ Nov 8, 2010 -> 09:31 PM) I am going to have to respectfully disagree. The starting pitching market is pretty thin and guys like Westbrook/Garland/Pavano are going to get big money for MULTIPLE years. Plenty of teams (including the Cards)would take Buehrle for only one year at 14,000,000. Now he doesn't have much value, but I wouldn't say it is negative. Come to think of it, isn't there an automatic escalator if MB is traded? That might damper things... Here is the Cardinals planned rotation for next season 1) Wainwright 2) Carpenter 3) Garcia 4) Westbrook 5) Lohse If they lose out on Westbrook (who I doubt they're willing to give any more than $6-8 mill/year), they'll just pick up another pitcher off of the junk pile and throw him into the #5 slot. They're not going to be adding $14 million, let alone give up a great, young piece (even if the Sox are including a bunch of other stuff).

QUOTE (beautox @ Nov 8, 2010 -> 07:02 AM) I know this has been discussed a ton over the past few years; but with A-Gons pending free agency and the fact we could really use an established LH 1B, i would love to see KW use Escobar's helium rise in the AFL coupled with Viciedo's modest showing in the show and something like a throw in like Danks 2.0 and see if the padres would be interested. In addition to that i wonder if as previously discussed on these boards Sizemore or Upton might be had for a potential injury riddled swap with Quentin. Sizemore has 16m remaining on his contract through '12. Move Pierre and Teahen while paying most if not all of their combined salary for some project arms ala thornton and threets, maybe someone like Cesar Ramos of San Diego. try to find a potential non tender trade target partner for jenks Sign one of Crawford or Werth and one of Manny or Vlad, call it an off season. re-up with andruw. Ideal opening day line up L Crawford LF R Beckham 2B L Sizemore RF/CF R Rios CF/RF L A-Gon 1B R Manny/Vlad DH R Ramirez SS L AJ R Morel Escobar, Viciedo, and Jordan Danks isn't anywhere close to enough for Adrian Gonzalez. Danks is absolutely worthless right now. You would have to include Mitchell for them to even think about it. If you trade Jenks before you non-tender him, you're going to get a AAAA player anyways...there's no real harm or gain to doing it, aside from letting someone else have his arbitration rights. Besides, I doubt anyone is going to want to even give up that for a guy who was bad last year and is going to cost $9-10 million. They'll just wait until he is non-tendered. Quentin has extremely little value. Perhaps Cleveland would look to move Sizemore this year, but I don't think they want to move a player of that caliber within the division. Beyond that, Sizemore is talented enough that the Sox would have to include more than just Quentin. I don't think you can just "sign Crawford," considering he's probably going to end up getting anywhere between $15-20 mill a year over 5-7 years. The Sox simply don't have that kind of money. They also don't have the $6-10 mill beyond that to sign Manny or Vlad. You are talking about adding like $40 million in payroll at the very minimum, and up to $60 million. That's insanity.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 6, 2010 -> 10:53 AM) I think the need for a LH hitter is overblown. Quentin hits like a LH hitter. He mashes righties and struggles with lefties. Just get a good hitter no matter what side of the plate he stands on. I absolutely agree with this. Why would you handicap yourself by spending $3 mill more or getting a worse bat simply because they hit from the left side? I think a left handed bat is preferable, but priority number one is getting a good hitter. The Sox had quite a few left handed bats available at all times last year, but that doesn't do a hell of a lot of good when they all suck.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Nov 5, 2010 -> 10:53 PM) Ben Sheets. 1 yr/$10M at age 31 I think a former Cy Young winner could net $7M a year at the same age, and the Nationals are interested. Last 3 years that Webb has been healthy he has finished either Cy Winner, or the runner up all 3 years. Obviously his health is the major issue, but if he is good to go, he is one of the best pitchers in baseball. And at 31, he is not too old. Yeah, the key there being 1 year. Webb has been out 2 full seasons, Sheets was out 1. Chien Ming Wang is a better comparison to Brandon Webb than Ben Sheets is. He got 1/$2 from the Nationals. Webb does have a better track record than Wang, but the current scouting report on Webb still has him topping out at like 85-88, which won't work in the majors. If Webb got anything other than a 1 year deal with a potential option, I'd s*** my pants.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 4, 2010 -> 09:56 PM) Does the Marlins' interest in Guillen make him a good manager? I feel like the main reason the Marlins would want Guillen is due to him name and not his managerial skills. What other organizations are lining up for Guillen? You don't bring in a manager because of name value. You bring in a manager because you think he's good. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 4, 2010 -> 09:54 AM) And if the Yankees don't jump in, his price could drop a lot. ehh I don't think so. The Red Sox and Angels are going to be in on him pretty heavily, and both of those teams are willing to drop a dime or three.

QUOTE (Lillian @ Nov 4, 2010 -> 09:49 AM) Would Pena really represent a sufficient upgrade? His numbers were horrible last year. Is a .196 Avg. with 158 strike outs really worthy of $8 million a year. Moreover, he only hit .204 vs RHP. Who else would you target? There are several options, just look up any 2010-11 free agent list. Cots Contracts has a great one. The reason the White Sox would bring in Carlos Pena is because even though he hit .196, he still hit almost 30 homers, and walked almost 100 times. His BABIP of .222 suggests that he was quite unlucky this year on balls in play and that, with a little bit more luck, he could increase his batting average to .230, which would do wonders for his overall numbers. Add in the fact that he's going from a pitchers park to a hitters park where the ball flies out of the park, and Pena could be a legitimate 35-40 homer candidate next year (considering he hit 28 this year, 39 last year, 31 in 2008, and 46 in 2007, I'd say there's a pretty realistic chance of that happening). He's also a well known to be a pretty good defender at 1B too. On top of all that, his value is probably as low as it can get right now, and Williams won a championship by bringing in players at their lowest value and giving them a shot to prove themselves again. He's done it several times throughout his tenure as GM, and it's really a great way to buy low. If he can get Pena for the right price, I think it'll be a done deal. (the main problem with Pena is that he is represented by Boras)
