QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 17, 2010 -> 04:16 PM) Ibanez for Quentin and Teahen. Right now. Similar cash this year and we free ourselves from Teahen's 2012 salary. Do it. That has Hundley for Grudzielanek and Karros written all over it

I will just say that with about the preceding 3-4 stories or so, I have no problem with them being pulled over. Some may view it as an immoral thing for a cop to pull someone over with no reason, but if they have any belief that the person may be drunk, then they have every right to do so and I think they should, because they are actually keeping the streets safe at that point. Drunk driving is one of the stupidest things a person can do and I have only driven semi-drunk once in the past 3 years, and it was a minor emergency when I did it - my girlfriend and I were down at the bars, a cop came and told the people leaving the bars that a storm with high winds capable of producing tornados was coming in. I'd had like 7 drinks in 3 hours, so I wasn't smashed, but probably wasn't legal to drive, but I wasn't concerned with getting a DUI at that point but instead getting to safety.

QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Nov 17, 2010 -> 12:41 PM) This in just after Kenny was quoted saying they are trying to figure out what to do and things might look the same (read no trades) after winter meetings. My point is, don't ever believe what the media are saying about Kenny and his job. If you actually believe that this team will be the same after the winter meetings, then I think you are naive. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Nov 17, 2010 -> 01:22 PM) You guys underestimate CQ's abilities as a fielder. He has a very good throwing arm and is improving in the field When stats and scouting agree that Quentin is terrible, then I think it is probably your judgment that is wrong. Just because he catches standard fly balls does not make him a good fielder.
-
I believe this would be stupid for a number of reasons. I won't believe it until something substantial actually breaks.

My first thought was also "how is Dallas McPherson 30?" And then I remember that I'm 23. f***.

QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 17, 2010 -> 12:09 PM) But not many teams have as much available cash as the Tigers do though. Holes at C, 2B/SS (wherever they end up putting Peralta), RF, and DH offensively. Verlander, Scherzer, and Porcello are their only 3 guaranteed starters, and I still don't think you can count on Porcello to really do anything yet. They had a 33 year old closer and just signed a 33 year old setup man to a 3 year contract that is worth more annually than Scott Linebrink's deal. I mean, seriously...their signings so far this offseason have included resigning Brandon Inge and Jhonny Peralta and signing Joaquin Benoit. It's obviously still early, but that's like $20 million committed next season to a two terrible hitters (though one of them is good defensively) and a reliever who has had 3 years his entire career and has never put up two good seasons in a row. They aren't being smart with their money right now; what makes you think they will be smart with it later?
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 17, 2010 -> 11:59 AM) Tigers/Twins/White Sox/Yankees/Red Sox/Rays/Blue Jays/Mariners/Angels/Athletics/Rangers have a chance to be really good next year if they use their money wisely the next few months. That's a big if though.

QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Nov 16, 2010 -> 03:24 PM) Bruce Levine disagrees with you. I understand the average fan having difficulty with something like this, but if you are a "credible" baseball journalist, you should absolutely know that signing a Type A free agent does not cost a team two draft picks, and I'm pretty sure it never has. The incumbent team will receive two draft picks, yes, but one of them is in the sandwich round between the 1st and the 2nd and is compensation from MLB itself, not from any particular team.

QUOTE (spiderman @ Nov 16, 2010 -> 10:16 PM) How do the White Sox have an amazing pitching staff? I'll give you that it's a quality starting rotation with solid depth, but who is the #1 starter amongst this group? I'm not even sure there's a #2 on this staff. Yes, each of these guys is likely to give a quality start when they pitch, and they do tend to keep the team in most ball games, but there's no ace on the staff, and I'm not sure there's a closer either. The White Sox have, like, 5 #2 starters right now. It may not be a #2 comparable to the likes of Cole Hamels or Matt Cain, but it's a hell of a lot better than Scott Baker.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 16, 2010 -> 07:13 PM) Manny drove in as many runs as Donny Lucy for the White Sox in 2010. Lucy batted 15 times and was basically released. Just because Vlad came back doesn't mean Manny will. Because using RBIs in a less than 100 plate appearance span is meaningful, especially when said player had just gotten off of the DL like 2 weeks before. Argue that he might get hurt or that you have a moral objection to bringing in roiders, but I really don't think you can argue effectiveness. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 16, 2010 -> 09:01 PM) But you're ignoring Manny's recent history. He's pushing 40 now, getting hurt, always going to have some sort of controversy sometime, and just isn't the same hitter when he's not juiced up. These guys fade quickly. See Sosa, Sammy, McGwire, Mark, Canseco, Jose. Manny's recent history? 2008 - 1.031 OPS, 654 PAs, 6.2 WAR 2009 - .949 OPS, 431 PAs, 2.5 WAR 2010 - .870 OPS, 320 PAs, 1.6 WAR I think it should be expected to see some decline, but much of that decline in WAR has to do with lack of plate appearances and performance in the outfield, and theoretically speaking, the Sox superb training staff while allowing him to remain a DH will keep him healthier at the very least. Sure wasn't for Jim Thome.

I have no problem with Williams atleast investigating the possibility of Upton, but with the offers teams may be willing to put together for him, the only hope you would have is that Towers views Danks as an elite starter, and you then have to hope that Towers views 2 years of Danks in a similar light to 5 years of Upton, or that he has confidence they can resign Danks. That is the one big advantage the White Sox would have, and while it's not exactly filling a hole and creating another, it still doesn't address a lot of the issues the Sox would potentially have with the 2011 club. I don't think Upton will go anywhere. I think Towers will ask for a package far too expensive for any team to be able to pay.
-
QUOTE (smalls2598 @ Nov 16, 2010 -> 03:27 PM) From that article: "Arizona would likely want three players for Upton — a backend reliever, a starter and a bat." I would say that Arizona would be looking at Danks/Floyd, Sale (when he actually becomes eligible to be traded, which is not until like January), Viciedo, and Morel (because, while both are solid prospects, neither are good enough prospects to be worth it). Upton is a phenomenal talent, but he is not worth that, and I don't think the Sox need to be involved on this. They are just simply not in a position to be giving up whatever minor league depth that they have for a player who is still a bit of a project.
-
Seriously, unless Jim Thome comes up to you right now and says that he is willing to play for $1.5-2 mill again, $5.5 mill plus incentives for one year of Manny Ramirez is absolutely worth it.

QUOTE (MurcieOne @ Nov 16, 2010 -> 09:04 AM) Brady, Manning and Rivers have had great seasons. In fact, I think that their teams would have trouble winning more than a couple games without them. However, I don't think any of them pose as much of a threat on the football field as Mike Vick does right now. Vick has found the missing dimension to his game, being able to pass (accurately), within the pocket. Couple that with his insane ability to create offense for himself and he is nearly impossible to start right now. Yes Vick has 1/2 the completions of Brady and Manning, but he has also only started and finished 4 complete games this season. I wouldn't say that Vick is MORE valuable than Brady, Manning or Rivers right now because of the Eagles talent level and having another above average QB on the roster; however, I don't think that anyone is playing better than he is right now. The knocks on Vick have always been that he can't throw downfield, that he doesn't complete many passes, and that he turns the ball over too much, but he was always a winning QB with Atlanta because he was so dangerous. The fact that he is now throwing as well as he is makes him ridiculously dangerous. I think you are right in that, if he's not the best pure QB in the league, he's probably the most valuable player right now. I would say that the Eagles are a legitimate Super Bowl contender with him at QB and I don't think the same thing can be said if they have Kolb starting all year.

QUOTE (Cali @ Nov 15, 2010 -> 10:38 PM) I want Sale starting in AA. I want him to throw some competitive innings, not against junk AAAA players and journeymen.... He will throw competitive innings in AAA. The hitters are better and more experienced, and thus will provide a bigger challenge. Further, pitching in Charlotte puts him in a stadium much more comparable to the Cell than Birmingham's does. The hitters in AA are probably more talented, sure, but Sale would destroy AA hitters and wouldn't get nearly as much out of the experience compared to hitters in AAA. If you can command two pitches well - which Sale can - he will have no problem slicing his way through AA lineups. He needs to refine a third pitch, and the best way to do that is to put him against hitters who are in AAA because they can still hit breaking stuff. If he is in the minors next year, it needs to be in AAA.

QUOTE (zenryan @ Nov 15, 2010 -> 10:01 PM) And Chicago has beaten Buffalo,Detroit,Minnesota, Dallas and Carolina. So that point means nothing. When you are arguing that Miami is a good team because they've lost to 4 good teams, when those are basically the only good teams Miami has faced (along with Green Bay, who Chicago also beat by 3 points), and 3 of their 5 wins have come against those terrible teams, then it does. Miami is basically the same exact team as Chicago, they just play in a more difficult division.
-
QUOTE (T R U @ Nov 15, 2010 -> 02:31 AM) im gonna go ahead and be pretty ballsy and declare that there is no chance the Bears beat Miami Thursday.. Weve lost to Baltimore, New England, New York Jets, and Pittsburgh.. and shoulda beat Pitt but the refs screwed us over.. that's pretty much 4 of the best 5 teams in the NFL right there with Atlanta being the other.. It doesn't matter if Thigpen is playing QB, he can do plenty enough to win the game with the way our defense has been playing and my expectancy that Nolans blitzing is going to have a field day on Cutler.. 3 of Miami's 5 wins have come against Buffalo, Minnesota, and Cincinnati. Minnesota and Cincinnati may have talented offensive teams, but both have QBs whose reputations and past achievements far outweigh their current abilities, and beyond that, Minnesota's receiving corps is terrible outside of Harvin. They also got absolutely curb-stomped by New England and Baltimore too. I also don't know how good Tennessee is - they're obviously a decent team, but I think that's probably all the more you can say about Miami right now too - they're a decent team. And, quite frankly, that's probably about all you can say about Chicago too. There's also a reason Tyler Thigpen is a 3rd QB. He could probably be a backup elsewhere, but he has a QB rating of 73.6 in his career, and that is as high as it is because of the 10-12 game stretch with Chan Gailey's pistol offense. I mean, I'm sure Brian Brohm can do plenty of things to win a football game for a team too, but there's a lot more he can do to lose a game too, and that's where Thigpen will be at for this game. The Dolphins better hope that they can run the ball, and considering Chicago has allowed the second fewest rushing yards per game, I would say that they are probably not going to be able to run much either.

Point being that Anderson and Kinsler were never college teammates. They were high school teammates though.
-
QUOTE (J.Reedfan8 @ Nov 13, 2010 -> 04:50 AM) Shame really. Had more overall raw talent than his college teammate Kinsler, and many thought BA would be the one who who not only make it, but have a solid career. Shows that not always the more talented player figures it out. I'm sure he still has more talent then any teammate of his named Kinsler too, considering he was a University of Arizona Wildcat. Ian Kinsler, starting 2B for the Texas Rangers, as well as Dustin Pedroia, starting 2B for the Boston Red Sox, were both Arizona State Sun Devils.

QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Nov 12, 2010 -> 09:26 PM) Good God why couldn't somebody in the Sox organization teach this guy how to swing a bat? Think of our defense with BA in center and Rios in right... The numbers actually indicated that he was only above average. From what I remember seeing, he got good reads and had solid speed, but he wasn't amazing out there. He made some amazing plays, but Podsednik made an amazing play or two in CF in 2009 too, and I don't think anyone was beckoning for him to be the team's every day CFer.
-
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Nov 12, 2010 -> 01:25 AM) His joke about dressing up for Halloween as Alexei Ramirez why wearing all black and swinging a bat around aimlessly without actually hitting anything. How some people said he liked Chris Sale until the minute we drafted him, and then dogged him. Other examples too. Perhaps it was wrong to say he was going to go around aimlessly swinging and stuff without hitting anything, because Alexei does hit quite a few balls, but he does swing at some pretty terrible pitches, especially in April and May. He also didn't like Chris Sale. He had him going in like the top 5-10 because that was the common assertion at the time, but he never valued him highly. The fact that he went to the White Sox is coincidental.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Nov 11, 2010 -> 12:17 PM) We have a RF'er Yeah not really, they more or less have a guy who stands out in RF and catches balls. He's better suited to DH. Unless you were referring to Rios or Teahen, in which case you could make that argument.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 11, 2010 -> 08:51 PM) He has a ridiculous record of being wrong on White Sox guys, because every time they draft or sign someone, he immediately starts hating it. You mean like how he had Gordon Beckham as a prime breakout candidate this year? He has also said the White Sox have the worst farm systems in the majors, but is he wrong? It is one of the worst, so I would say you can make the argument that it is the worst. He may have some underlying bias towards the White Sox, but I really have never seen it. He seems to be very critical of a lot of teams - I recall seeing both Nationals and Giants fans crying about how Law always tears their teams apart. I strongly doubt Law means to direct any ill-will towards the White Sox.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Nov 11, 2010 -> 07:00 PM) Keith Law has been doing a little series this off-season for positional Free Agents. Some white sox hate from Mr. Law.... He placed Konerko is his "In demand" tier of players, while he just repeated his comments about Konerko being a time-bomb, old, bad defense, and about to fall off the cliff. In his "Stay away" from category, he had Pierzynski saying he is old, slow, and can't get on base. In his "stay away" from section of starting pitchers I thought it was kind of funny that all 3 of the pitchers listed are ex-sox players. Freddy Garcia, Jon Garland, and Javier Vazquez are his 3 starters to avoid. He did however make note of Don Cooper in both Freddy and Garland's little write-up. It could have very well be sarcasm, but he mentioned that Don Cooper must be the best pitching coach in baseball, and then in Garland's he said "all-hail Don Cooper". Maybe he doesn't hate Coop, or maybe he is a sarcastic c***. Why is Keith Law a White Sox hater when he is telling the truth or atleast a side of the equation that could very well be true? Konerko is going to be like 35 years old next year and, coming off the best season of his career, he's going to command a big pay check. It's far likelier that he will revert to his career .850 OPS standards and not be worth $12 million, and it's entirely possible that he could fall off the tracks completely and put up an .800 or less OPS. AJ Pierzynski was pretty mediocre last year and got ridiculously hot down the stretch to raise his average to .270. He doesn't throw out base runners, and he's only OK offensively. He calls a good game, but you can have pitching coaches call the game too. It may be entirely possible that Keith Law hates the White Sox, but it may also be possible that he doesn't care either way about the White Sox and just gives his opinion of the players. I'm going to guess it's the latter.
