How do you feel about the Designated Hitter?
witesoxfan replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in The Diamond Club
You can also include pre-game strategy, being lineup making. There's a science behind it, but it's not exactly, and actually determining who is going to DH is, you know, a big deal. -
I like to call that sort of thing poetry.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Feb 27, 2010 -> 01:27 AM) I had nother dream about getting engulfed by a giant anaconda. i am now convinced that's how i'm going to die. so if i ever dissapear from the board know it's because of a god damn snake. No, it's a f***ing psychological thing. You know anacondas suffocate their prey, and you feel you're being suffocated, whether it work or a job or school or a girl or whatever. So it's a psychological thing, where you feel you are being suffocated to death. That, or something completely different, I don't give a f***, I'm drunk. Dreams are trippy as f***. Met a girl tonight. Made out with her. Hardcore. Want to do it again. (so does she) Relationship thread? -Nah... I started it. *Does it matter? My life is my own life. *Do I take advice? Of course. Do I use it?

Just for s***s and giggles, here's a lineup the Twins could throw out against a tough right hander... Span - CF (L) Hudson - 2B (S) Mauer - C (L) Morneau - 1B (L) Kubel - LF (L) Cuddyer - RF ® Thome - DH (L) Punto - SS (S) Tolbert - 3B (S) That would be 8 guys hitting from the left side of the plate. And I'm sure if they wanted to get really creative or just stupid, they could find a way to get Cuddyer out and Morales in.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Feb 25, 2010 -> 10:04 PM) You shouldn't be but that shouldn't be. The only team the Sox really need a second lefty for is Minnesota, and considering how good Morneau and Mauer are at hitting lefties, that tends to get neutralized. Detroit doesn't have a real strong lefty hitter, and while Cleveland has Branyan, Hafner, Choo, and Sizemore, only Choo and Sizemore instill any type of fear in me from the left side of the plate. If the Sox could go with a 6-man pen while not losing Santos and having a second lefty, I'd be just fine with it. But it seems as though the organization really likes Santos, and the second lefty is something Ozzie obviously can't go without. I'm generally not the type to look back on deals, but the current situation makes the Linebrink contract look really, really bad, because they could easily go into the season with a top 4 of Jenks, Thornton, Putz, and Pena. It almost would have been better if the Sox could have let the Dodgers keep the money from the Pierre deal and instead take on Linebrink (but of course, he has no trade protection too). In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if they did try and work something out along those lines, because it seems far too coincidental that the Sox got $10.5 mill back from the Dodgers while Linebrink makes $10.5 mill over the next two seasons (though the allocation of resources is different, as the Sox get $7 mill this year and $3.5 mill next, opposed to $5 and $5.5). Whatevs, just rambling at this point.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Feb 25, 2010 -> 09:48 PM) 23% of his total hits, 78% of his total ER, 33% of his total BB and 50% of his total HR allowed came in that 1 inning of work. In other words: those other 16.2 IP were pretty solid. Absolutely, though I'm still not excited about the prospect of Williams in the bullpen.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Feb 25, 2010 -> 09:41 PM) I remember reading in some of the scouting reports that he did take pitches to his own detriment at times. I remember hearing that as well, and the Sox want him to become more aggressive at the plate this season. I'm not overly excited about his line, but that's mainly because it's just a very small sample. I'm excited to see what kind of numbers he can put up this season, and I do like that he is willing to work a count. If he can become a Tony Phillips type of hitter, though hopefully more successful on the basepaths (because a 60.8% SB% is just not good) I would be ecstatic.

QUOTE (GO CHI SOX! @ Feb 25, 2010 -> 06:07 PM) Overbay and Downs salary dump. They pay half, we pay half. total of 11 million, each team pays 5.5 million. Why would the Blue Jays eat any of Downs' contract? He's a pretty damn good pitcher and there are plenty of teams out there who would spend $4 mill on him.

Perfect for a 40 days and 40 nights challenge, leaving just enough time for everyone to masturbate to Buehrle's first pitch.

QUOTE (Springfield SoxFan @ Feb 24, 2010 -> 07:33 AM) Since Santos is out of options, we have to expose him to waivers, does that mean a team has to put him on its 25 man active roster or can a team claim him put him on the 40 man and send him to the minors? To be more direct, if he does not hit a another team's 25 man roster, can the Sox bring him back? They don't necessarily have to add him to the 25-man roster, but if he is not added, he'll immediately go back on waivers. If he proves he's completely incapable of pitching at the major league level, and the Sox send him down, it's very possible he'd pass through. There are pitchers with raw talent all over the place, but having them actually be able to harness that talent is a completely different beast unto itself, and teams may not want to chance him figuring it out at the MLB level.

If you want one game where Crede made a difference, he did hit a walk off grand slam against Detroit on May 13th. If not for Crede, maybe the Twins lose the division by 1 game. I think they're happy with what they got out of Crede.

I can think of about 4 or 5 other pitchers I'd rather see make the major league roster over Daniel Cabrera. Cabrera has to prove himself in the minors before he even merits consideration. All this talk about Cabrera is simply spring training fluff.

Supposedly the Bears top target in free agency is Julius Peppers with Aaron Kampman as a backup. Saw it on roto. Have fun.

remember when Andruw Jones was signed and the club said that they didn't view him as an everyday player?

QUOTE (mmmmmbeeer @ Feb 23, 2010 -> 08:41 PM) That's what I thought too. I thought many of his problems in the Angels organization were attributed to alcohol and that upon coming to the Sox organization he turned over a new leaf. Oh well, either way it's good to hear he's quit again. I don't know that he ever quit drinking. It just seemed as though he did what he could to either remain out of trouble.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Feb 23, 2010 -> 04:08 PM) He was once a big time prospect. He was dicked around with the Rangers, though who knows how his "psyche" per say is. I think using the phrase "big time" is a bit of a stretch, but he was a top 10 prospect in the Rangers system 2 years in a row (going into the 2006 and 2007 seasons).

Garfien: Sox made serious play for Halladay

QUOTE (southsidepride15 @ Feb 23, 2010 -> 01:01 PM) No, everyone's intitled to an opinion. I just get so sick of the negativity on here. I mean, I know that's what this site is famous for but this is the time of year for optimism.... not the time to cry about that fact that we didn't land the best left handed hitter in baseball. Rios is king, Kotsay is clutch, and Q and Konerko will be back with monster numbers. At least that's what I've figured out by using my flawless logic. I really don't see where the negativity was in my post. I don't think it's a crime to look at things objectively. -
QUOTE (chw42 @ Feb 23, 2010 -> 11:52 AM) Which isn't very good. I agree with the aforementioned statement.

QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 23, 2010 -> 11:20 AM) fade into bolivia? Atleast it's not Chicago

QUOTE (chw42 @ Feb 23, 2010 -> 11:15 AM) Nice to know. It's just that Mark usually sucks against Cleveland. Career ERA of 4.70 in 222 innings
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Feb 21, 2010 -> 03:04 PM) The best bet for the Sox to have good contributions this season is for Jones to start the season well and Kotsay to fade into bolivia and play once a week. Kotsay is way too similar to Darin Erstad and Timo Perez for him to do something like that, don't be silly.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Feb 23, 2010 -> 02:51 AM) After 2006, all the talk was about having the most expensive rotation in the major leagues. At that point, I think it was around $55 million, something in that range. You had Buehrle, Contreras, Garcia, Garland, Vazquez and McCarthy, who would be traded for Danks...the Garcia/Floyd move was the other one that really saved KW's a--. I agree with the diminishing returns idea...heck, KW also did too, he dealt Javier away in order to create payroll flexibility AND simply due to the fact that he thought the back end of the rotation could sort of hold up enough to justify the move. We really need a premier offensive player to get us over the hump and give us a much better opportunity of making the playoffs and going deep...the question is which players can KW afford to part with and still not impact the future TOO adversely. Beckham, Ramirez, Danks, Floyd, Thornton, Putz (if healthy), Quentin (maybe)...have the most value to other clubs, but they do to the Sox, too. If you trade away Flowers, that leaves no replacement for an aging AJ. One of the keys with Flowers is that you insert a pretty big bat at a position that's more statistically anemic than any other on the field. That leaves Hudson, Danks, Mitchell, Viciedo, Morel, CJ, Shelby, Miguel Gonzalez, Santeliz et al to get a deal done. They would really have to gut at least 40% of the farm system, like the Swisher trade TIMES 2. If I was KW, I wouldn't be sleeping easily right now...and I would be even more worried about doing nothing about the DH situation, because the longer he waits, the more expensive the solution. I'm not buying that he can wait for a player to be waived out of ST and strike gold...at best, we'll get someone like Jayson Nix again. I would say that had to do with payroll flexibility, Vazquez being worse than mediocre for 2 of his 3 years in Chicago, and his inability to perform in big games. Neither Ozzie nor Williams could count on Vazquez to do much of anything anymore, and considering they were able to get good value out of him, his move was easy to make. -

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Feb 23, 2010 -> 12:43 AM) I don't think that's a fair way at looking at it because quality start =/= quality start. A quality start for Halladay is more likely to be 8 innings, 2-3 runs, while a quality start for Garcia/Hudson is more likely to be 7 IP, 3-4 runs. Just like two pitchers may have the same win totals does not mean their wins were valued the same. Obviously not, it's a very simplistic way to look at it. The point I was trying to make was that I simply don't think adding Halladay helps the Sox that much. I mentioned it on here in the offseason when the thought of picking up Halladay came up, but the Law of Diminishing Marginal Returns states that as you continue to add factors of production, the increases in total production will become smaller. The Sox currently have 4 starting pitchers capable of putting up an ERA of 3.50 or better, and 2 others who are likely capable of putting up an ERA in the 4.50 range, and all 6 of them could realistically put up better numbers than that too (though the boundaries I've given them are very fair). What does adding a pitcher who puts up an ERA of 3.00 really add to the club? I mean, last year, the pitching staff had the 2nd best ERA in the AL at 4.14, and that pitching staff wasn't nearly as good as the pitching staff is now (they went into the season with Contreras and Colon at the back end of the rotation and a bullpen that I would say was far less talented). I think it's safe to assume that the pitching staff this year can put up atleast a 4.00 ERA...is adding Roy Halladay and bringing that number down to 3.90 or 3.80 really going to have a huge effect on this team? Sure, it'd be cool, but wouldn't it also be a bit embarrassing if they did have the best rotation of the past 25 years and missed the playoffs because they didn't have an offense?
