  1. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 09:21 PM) I'll speak for myself...I DVR'd Hard Knocks, and as soon as Sox game was over, I turned off my computer and went to watch one of my favorite shows on television. I actually wasn't even thinking about you because you come on here regardless of win or loss. You swing from side to side pretty easily but you can be pretty level headed, even in extreme circumstances. There are just some on here that seem to suggest that the season was over even when the Sox were in first place because the Sox didn't pick up any pitching at the deadline when the White Sox have one of the best ERAs...like a top 5 ERA...in the entire AL, even after July. They've been banged up, out of rhythm, a victim of being on the road, and a victim of pitching in heat. You are already starting to see them pitch much, much better of late as they are readjusting themselves to their new roles (Carrasco is apparently a hell of a replacement for Masset) and a general rhythm and flow to the staff is being re-established. If Ozzie is smart, he will slowly work Linebrink back into the 8th inning role whenever he gets back and not in the first game back. Ozzie's smart enough and he knows better than that. It's just funny that some of those people haven't been here the past couple days.
  2. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 05:16 AM) Would the numbers make sense to add Furcal, Hudson and Beltre? Aren't we losing most of the payroll benefits of Cabrera, Crede and Uribe leaving because of raises/escaltors in many of the existing contracts? I have no desire to bring in both Furcal and Hudson. That would leave the team with a hell of a mess, what with Ramirez, Swisher, and Konerko all apparently deserving of starting spots and only 2 spots for all 3 of them. If the organization thinks Ramirez can handle short, then the answer would be Hudson; otherwise, it's Furcal. I actually have no fear of Furcal producing...the only concern I have with him is injuries, and the Sox have the best training staff in the majors. Some you can't prevent, but they generally keep all of their position players healthy throughout the course of the year on anything other than freak accidents. If you sign him to another 3 year deal, I'd feel perfectly comfortable that he'd be worth the money. I don't think you have to move either of them unless you are getting enough value back. The Sox obviously aren't going to spend $150 mill, but with the contracts they have coming off and really only modest raises going to others, they can afford to take on a contract while giving out another one and still be fine with Contreras and Konerko. If they get pieces they can move them for, then that's an entirely different story.
  3. If you want to be fair about it, Carlos Quentin would make a good leadoff hitter too; his production justifies him better as a #3 hitter though. Same story with Soriano.
  4. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 08:55 PM) Sox lead the whole game, great pitching performance all around, timely hitting. BORING. seriously, f*** this, I would have rather lost so that way atleast Soxtalk was exploding...SEASON'S OVER, WTFOMG It's amazing how much quieter it really is when the Sox win. If the score were reversed, you would think you would probably have to be sent to the hospital and treated for a poisoning with how much venom is thrown around here.
  5. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 08:14 AM) Who's he supposed to be motivating in the post game interview? well the press of course, trying to make sure they do their jobs right
  6. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 02:26 PM) Yes, he profiles closer to Mike Cameron (strikeouts, power numbers and defensively, minus the arm) than Soriano/Bonds, but I don't think any GM in baseball would consider him anywhere to be in the same league talent-wise as Uribe...which is why Jose Guillen keeps getting huge contracts over and over again, despite his many character issues...or why players like Josh Hamilton and Milton Bradley inevitably find homes. Would KW trade Quentin to get Chris Young straight up today? Of course not, but he'd think about it, because CF is a more important position to fill than LF, it always has been, or the White Sox and about 20 other MLB teams would have an easier time finding starters who can play the position (arm/range) and also put up 20 homers per season while hitting at least .270 with 15-20 stolen bases. Kenny Williams wouldn't think for a second about a Quentin for Young deal. He'd hang up the phone and laugh until his pants literally fell off.
  7. Why do the Rockies always claim garbage from the Twins? It's EXACTLY the same as it was last year; (Ramon Ortiz/Livan Hernandez) starts off the year well. A ways through the season (Ortiz/Hernandez) start to regress to the mean and then some, completely sucking up the joint. A little further along, the Twins realize (Ortiz/Hernandez) suck complete ass, and so they DFA both players. The Rockies then seem to, for whatever reason, have some fascination with (Ortiz/Hernandez) and claim them. WTF
  8. don't everybody jump for it at once
  9. Just because a man speaks broken English and every other word out of his mouth if f***, s***, or f***s*** doesn't mean he's not smart. Ozzie would probably have been a psychology major because he seems to know how to f*** with people. He's also an asshole, which is one of the reasons I love him.
  10. jesus, this is like my 11th gamethread of the year...that's like more than 10% of the games. 9-1 record works for me, and I'm going to add my 10th today because Verlander remembers what happened the last time he faced the Sox, and history generally repeats itself when dealing with morons who went to Old Dominion (no offense to ODU or anyone who actually currently is or has gone to Old Dominion, including the dude the Sox drafted from there this year (as I seem to remember they did take someone from there)). It's just that Verlander is teh suck. I will also predict a Griffey homer if he plays, because GRIFFEY
  11. It could also be that they found out what it's like to not be in first place for a day and realized that it sucked. Perhaps they do play with a chip on their shoulder. Perhaps Ozzie deflecting the blame is what it is. Perhaps it's being at home. Whatever the case, I could honestly see them having one of their longest winning streaks in a good long while coming up. They'll lose tomorrow just to smite me, but I could very well see this team playing well for a good long while (as I have predicted elsewhere). One thing is for certain...they apparently didn't want to just give up and pack it in tonight in a 14 inning affair after clawing their way back to tie it up, so I can't see them suddenly just going cold again. This was a game that feels like a streak is about to happen.
  12. I get Gatorade just because it's cheaper than most...Powerade doesn't do much for me but Gatorade is OK. I'd get Vitamin Water but it just seems so expensive, like $1 for a 16 or 20 ounce bottle (or whatever it is). Has it become cheaper as they've begun to mass produce it or not? If so, I'll check it out the next time I'm out at Wal-Mart.
  13. QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 12:41 AM) How many PAs does Thome need still and how many is he on pace for? I don't know about anyone else, but I really don't want to get tied into a long-term deal with Dunn, and quite frankly, I get nervous whenever the team ties someone up to a long-term deal. If you would be able to get him for 4 years, it'd be a different story, but that extra 5th year just really seems to tack on a lot to me for whatever reason and I could easily see him getting 5. I'd pick up Thome's option next year and hope to be able to find a replacement via trade that has about 3 or so years left on their deal. In the meantime, I could easily see the Sox having a generally quiet offseason. Sign one of Furcal and Hudson with Alexei manning the other position and bringing in a 3Bman (and I'd be perfectly content with Beltre).
  14. I'd say the biggest reason for optimism tonight was that the Sox bullpen pitched 10 innings and the team won. This game had a Tigers blowout written all over it. That said, it would be nice if tomorrow's game doesn't go into extras and it'd be super nice if Danks could pitch about 7 or so innings, letting Dotel set up and Jenks shut it down.
  15. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Aug 5, 2008 -> 11:55 PM) After watching the last two Twins games, and tonights Sox game, ANYONE who says home field isn't a huge deal is a moron, plain and simple. there are only like 2-3 teams that are above .500 on the road (with the Angels being f***ing ridiculous). I don't care who is the road team, they almost certainly haven't been a good team on the road this season, and thus you really aren't facing a good team. That's what's always gotten to me about this and anybody who says "the SoS and Home/Road even each other out" because I really don't see that as true and there are facts that back that up. You may be facing a talented team, but they aren't necessarily good.
  16. Ron Gardenhire is so boring. His team has lost 2 games in a row that they should have won after being in first place for the first time in over 100 days (and effectively losing any hold they had on first place), and he's just having a ho-hum interview after the game "we tried our best, we threw everything we could at them, but they just pulled it out. Good hitting team even in a rough season, yada yada yada." He's a fantastic in game manager, but he just doesn't seem to be a motivator.
  17. Is it possible that Griffey was also brought in to spell both Swisher and Konerko? Sending them both a message that "you guys have had 4 months to get your s*** together, and because you haven't, some of your at bats are being taken away by an over the hill, injury prone player who really hasn't done s*** this season but is still an upgrade from both of you." A bit of a wakeup call. I think Konerko has 2 homers since the trade and Swisher just walked off. It might be working.
  18. QUOTE (YASNY @ Aug 5, 2008 -> 02:27 PM) Yeah, well, I still take credit for pointing that out to the board. damn right
  19. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Aug 6, 2008 -> 12:14 AM) thank you seattle!! Wow, Guerrier wearing it in this Seattle series yeah that Marte trade still looks great, lol
  20. easily the craziest 15 minutes of the season
  21. QUOTE (Wanne @ Aug 5, 2008 -> 11:56 PM) Sorry guys...galliant effort. But I just don't see it with Swisher up there. He's as big a headcase as Paulie right now. he's not a headcase, he just has a really long and slow swing
  22. well, Mariners lead...8-7 M's. Nathan blew a save
  23. Uh, Twins lead 7-6. I'm so f***ing tired of Minnesota's stupidass bulls***
