QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 29, 2008 -> 01:47 PM) http://blogs.nypost.com/sports/st/archives...deadline_1.html This is almost the exact scenario that I laid out a few days ago. The Red Sox pay Manny's salary, trade him to a contender for major league ready talent then swing a deal for Teixeira. Angel Berrora is about to start a holy war against the NY Post blog. He isn't even related to Geronimo and he hasn't played since 2000.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 29, 2008 -> 01:19 PM) When is the last time a team set itself up for a long term championship-level run by giving a lot of money to a Scott Boras managed player? The Red Sox contract to JD Drew. Also, the two New York teams are pretty solid though not championship level at the current moment.

Julio Franco has the record for oldest man to homer in a game. In fact, he hit so many as an "old fart" that he holds 18 of the top 19 spots in regards to old dudes homering in a game. Who is the only other player in the top 19?

QUOTE (juddling @ Jul 29, 2008 -> 12:24 AM) I've been unemployed for about three weeks now and i have to say that Drew Carey sucks as host of "The Price is Right". He seems to be very uninterested in the job and it's a shame to see him reduced to that job (though i know he's getting paid a boatload so i shouldn't feel that sorry for him). Cleveland sucks too

QUOTE (Frankensteiner @ Jul 28, 2008 -> 09:53 PM) Buehrle's record and ERA against the Twins are both pretty good. the Twins broadcasters said tonight that he has like 21 career wins in 33 career starts
-
and before anyone complains about a Jekyll and Hyde offense, there was no offensive philosophy the White Sox could have instilled that was going to win with the way they executed tonight. Slowey's command was fantastic, but the lineup just looked like absolute s***. Alexei played like a rookie in the field (he is, so it's expected now and then). Buehrle left a couple pitches out to be crushed. It happens. Forget about the loss and go back out tomorrow and actually score some runs.

QUOTE (scenario @ Jul 26, 2008 -> 08:12 PM) (And I don't think a half-year of home/away splits tell us anything.) I think that can be looked at both ways. He could very easily be a better power hitter than a guy that puts up a .334 slugging...he's also not going to do what he does at Charlotte though either.

QUOTE (shipps @ Jul 28, 2008 -> 10:03 AM) I would guess when the rosters are extended they would call him up for some nice speed of the bench. Jerry Owens is faster

I find it hard to believe that AJ Burnett has better stuff than Javy Vazquez. Perhaps my untrained eye is blinded by love and sickass movement, but I see 2 good fastballs, a good change, a good curve, and a good slider from Javy. Is AJ Burnett's stuff really that good? And along the same lines, even coming from Javy's biggest fan, stuff alone does not make a pitcher. I might very well prefer Contreras to Burnett. Perhaps potential rumors would light a fire under Jose's ass and he'll come out guns blazing.

2002 - 2.83 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, K/BB of 4, K/9 of 10.7 2003 - 1.58 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, K/BB of 2.6, K/9 of 9.8 his clutch and leverage stats are good too CLUTCH: 2002 2003 LEVERAGE: 2002 2003 I've never said anything about his 2004, where he was effective but not dominant, nor his 2005, where he sucked. He was looked at as a potential closer because he was a dominant reliever and the statistics prove it.

QUOTE (lukeman89 @ Jul 28, 2008 -> 02:07 PM) washburn over the last two months (11 starts) has an era under 3 and he's still a mediocre pitcher
-
its even funnier because, while he does have a great looking fastball, his breaking ball doesn't look anything near as good as Joba's splitter or K-Rod's slider (though it's a good pitch if he keeps it down). On top of that, Joba's fastball is way better too. He could have a big impact for the Cubs, but I don't see him doing anything monumental. It's his first go around the league and teams don't have any idea what he offers yet.
-
can you even offer arbitration to players that opt out of contracts?
-
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jul 28, 2008 -> 12:43 PM) Washburn to the Yankees is gaining more momentum. Those Yankmees can get just about any player they want mediocrity comes cheaply
-
He and Ozzie never really got along that well, and Ozzie tended to misuse him a bit at times. There was a time when Damaso Marte was looked at as a closer candidate for the White Sox and it was justified too, so let's not act like he's some super head case. I think as much of that had to do with Ozzie than it did Marte's head alone.

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jul 28, 2008 -> 02:45 PM) thanks, didn't know that. Looks like the last few MacDougal outings weren't too bad...wonder if he could be of some use down the stretch. I'd rather see Broadway or even Haeger out of the bullpen than MacDougal. If you get can a player who is under contract in some team's minor league organization for him, I'd do it.

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jul 28, 2008 -> 03:16 AM) You are correct, sir! I fully expect him on the 25-man roster and starting by August 4th...perhaps leading off with Quentin moving to the bench.

QUOTE (joejoedairy @ Jul 28, 2008 -> 02:53 AM) I'll take sheets and rocco baldelli. And maybe O'dawg Rocco Baldelli is currently on a rehab assignment and his future in baseball is very much in doubt. He's playing, but I wouldn't count on anything from him ever with the health problems he's had. If he can make it back, that'd be a great story(maybe they can give him an MVP if he hits a few homers in the derby come next July), but I don't think you can completely count on him being a full-time contributer ever again. I would love Orlando Hudson though.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 28, 2008 -> 02:58 AM) Well, who ever claimed this organization knows who plays the best centerfield defense. If that was the priority, Brian should start there everyday. Anyways, it was just a thought on a dull Sunday afternoon. It wasn't meant to be so much serious as it was fun. I atleast understand what you were trying to do, and I don't mind idle conversation. I'd say I hate when people rip on others, but I'm sure someone would dig something up I've said in the past too when really I was either just drunk/criticizing, which is all I was doing here too. I also don't think the Sox go for best defense, but they do want someone who is atleast adequate out there; Nick Swisher has proven to me and others that he knows what he's doing out there and can play a good CF while also being competent with the stick, whereas I'm not sure if Anderson could do quite what Swisher has at the plate. I don't think his ultimate production would be that far off from what Swisher does though at the same time, and I hope he gets in the lineup soon because he hasn't started a game in forever...16 at bats in July doesn't do anything for him.

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Jul 28, 2008 -> 12:39 AM) Just watched the MLB 2005 World Series film. Goosebumps galore...that team was f***ing good. I miss Carl Everett. one of the greatest teams I've ever seen. Getting a lead in like the first 40 or whatever games of the season was ridiculous.
-
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jul 27, 2008 -> 11:16 PM) He's having enough trouble adjusting to LF, I even imagine the sort of problems he'd have in center. I'm not going to say that I'm certain of this, but from what I've seen of Carlos is that he speeds up quickly...good short-distance speed, which is perfect for LF and RF...gets decent to good reads on balls, but is pretty slow, all things considered, when in a full sprint. When you have to cover as much ground as a CF does, not being fast is generally a problem unless you get hall of fame reads on balls, ala Jim Edmonds.
-
I'm going to be completely honest and say that you lost me when you said Quentin would move to CF. I just couldn't foresee Quentin being an even average defensive CFer.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 27, 2008 -> 07:14 PM) "No way". Aaron Rowand, 10/23/05, 8:27 PM PST. "I don't think that taste is there" is a timeless quote.
