Could the White Sox hire Dave Dombrowski?
caulfield12 replied to gusguyman's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Guess we don't have to worry about another player going into the HoF wearing a Red Sox hat despite spending more of his career with the White Sox. DD would never come to Chicago unless they were opening up the purse strings. But at least we'd finally get a GM who wasn't completely risk-averse and wasn't just sitting on top of all the organizational depth in the outfield, but actually pursuing some creative trade avenues of acquiring additional talent for the rotation/bullpen. -
Could the White Sox hire Dave Dombrowski?

He’s done far better work with the Expos, Marlins, Tigers and Red Sox than the track record of anyone in our current front office. -
You’re forgetting Bogaerts.
-
Since Takatsu and Iguchi were our last two Japanese players, maybe you’re going to have to send the scouting videos to KW.

The quest for LH hitting knows no boundaries.

The Free Agent I want to sign more than any other

Pretty soon we can have our own Crime Scene Investigation program... -
The White Sox have no clue how to go about signing lower budget guys. Historically, the overall value in terms of $/fWAR for superstars has always been better than for the next level or two. Of course, that’s only about 2-3 players every offseason, this year, Cole and Rendon. But I guess we’ll have another 38 games to watch in 2020 and see firsthand if the Twins and Indians can pull off the trick of competing with limited/mid or small market budgets. It took internal guys like Kepler and Polanco stepping it up to really turn the Twins around. We have six positions theoretically covered, so simply need 1.5-2.0ish contributions from RF, DH and catcher. The pitching staff is the much bigger question mark.
-
Fine, then be the Twins in 2019. The problem with that is coming up short in the playoffs and who’s capable of actually picking 2nd/3rd Tier free agents like its 2004-2005 all over again?

Colome was a trade...

2.4 fWAR with a -15.1 on defense
-
B-/C+ because of the lack of progress in the minors beyond the obvious top guys. If Collins is actually for real, it COULD become a B. That said, we still have major questions about every aspect of pitching beyond Giolito and still don’t have a very solid RH bullpen option other than Colome, who will be gone after next year. Everything rotation-wise hinges on Kopech and Cease. And Herrera is the Amazon rain forest. As for position players, Anderson’s defense this year is partially negating his nice offensive breakthrough in what projected as another 20/20 season. Same thing with Jimenez. Unless we go back to GregStats, he will struggle by ANY type of WAR measure. And how much of McCann’s offense is sustainable? The clock is ticking. The scary part is the Sox have consistently failed at finding even replacement level hitting out of RF and DH for seemingly a half decade or longer. That’s supposed to be the easy part. Up the middle of the diamond and 3B are the premium positions, which should be covered for the first time with the delayed arrivals of Madrigal and Robert.

https://www.mlb.com/news/mike-shirley-named-white-sox-amateur-scouting-director https://sportsmockery.com/2019/09/the-white-sox-have-a-new-director-of-amateur-scouting/ “Mike Shirley, in addition to being a White Sox crosschecker, has been a personal hitting instructor for kids (11-17 year olds) in the Indianapolis area. He knows his hitting. Let's see if that influences his future picks for the White Sox.” joshnelson You won’t find much better job security than working for the White Sox. Shirley’s been with the organization for 20 years. Here’s Hahn on the promotion of Shirley. “We are incredibly pleased to be able to promote Mike as the new director of amateur scouting. Mike has spent two decades in our organization, serving in just about every capacity within the scouting department. He is a very well-regarded and versatile scout with a substantial evaluation track record and a facility with objective analysis.”

Valentin was the best baserunner in recent Sox history for someone lacking blazing speed...very instinctual, like Kris Bryant. -

NO NO NO. He finishes hot and then he ends up being penciled into the 2020 roster again. -

In the end, you have to get two stud players out of those deals instead of merely saving on payroll. We all knew how volatile the ceilings and floors were with Kopech. Lopez is likewise proving to be an enigma, and then there's the debate about the back-end of the Sale deal being way too weak (should have held out for a better 3rd player instead of taking two wild cards back.) Someone like a Chavis who at least had the ability to hit. -

Felt like Belle had most of his big numbers in garbage time that one prolific season he put up for the Sox... Abreu is what he is at this point. A decent value for $8-12 million, but a waste of resources at anything over $14-15 million. -

The worst part is they thought Palka (defensively) or Jay were legitimate answers...or Cordell/Engel/Tilson. Just more bad talent evaluation. -

We couldn't have offered him that amount...but he's definitely contributed positively to their wild card chase when healthy. With Hahn/KW basically admitting they don't have enough money to keep all their guys internally (like Moncada or Giolito) and spend huge in FA, it would have been shocking had they shelled out $40-50 million for a 3-4 year extension...especially with 4.5 prospects (if you still include Basabe) stacked up at that position in Adolfo, Walker, Rutherford and Gonzalez. -

Jimenez about to pass McCann on the OPS charts... How many times in the last, oh, say decade...has everyone written how easy it is to find "acceptable" hitters at the corner outfield spots, 1B and DH. The White Sox, other than Jose Abreu, have spent a decade whiffing at this seemingly simplest task of all. In an era when every hitter's putting up 25-35 homers, that's inexcusable. Pitching, well...everyone knows how much volatility there is in that area, at least in terms of bullpens. Yet we choose the one reliever who anyone who followed the Royals from 2014-17 could have told you wasn't the same pitcher. He was broken, just like Carl Edwards, Jr. -

Yes, the Reds were the only team he played for after LAD. Yolmer should not be a fixture as anything but Gatorade Midwest Regional Sales Associate. -
Be careful, the "unprecedented financial flexibility...we competitively offered Tanaka/Machado/Harper...and signed Robert over StL" brigade will come after you with pitchforks if you suggest anyone is priced out of our market.
-
They're not going to give Rendon the biggest contract in free agency this year, then stick him at a position where he's not even that confident compared to 3B. If that's the plan, might as well make him a corner outfielder, but that doesn't make much sense, either. (And no, we're still not going to be able to trade Madrigal for a TOR until he's a proven 3-4 fWAR player at the big league level...still a number of skeptics out there.)
-
Gordon won’t move to RF for just one season...just to keep his career going with the White Sox. He’d retire or become a coach...something like the Thome role.
-
The Mets aren’t going to just give Nimmo away. Haniger is the better bet, because of the situation Seattle finds itself in...comfort in AL, price tags is way down from previous years but there’s still X amount of risk that will never go away when you’re looking to add difference makers instead of complementary players. You can make the same risk/reward move with Wil Myers and take on a salary subsidy from SD if you believe in his talent and your overall scouting. He didn’t respond well to inconsistent playing time and being forced into CF for much of the season, which is one of the main reasons they traded Reyes at peak...
