Most Airlines just don't seem to care
QUOTE (G&T @ Apr 11, 2017 -> 10:04 AM) To be fair, that isn't a reasonable process. There has to be a cap or else the compensation could be in the millions of dollars by the time someone takes it, since the passengers know the airline has no leverage. Employees can't have that kind of discretion. In any event, this wasn't an overbooked flight. This guy was removed for their own employee, which I think, is what is causing the outcry. If the guy won't leave because another passenger had rights to the seat, then the conversation is different. There was....depending on which story you believe, $800 (passengers say) or maybe $1000 (airline story), see below, they didn't come close to it. Now, where it gets really interesting is when passengers are bumped involuntarily, like the four people on Sunday night's flight. Depending on the length of the delay, the airline may have to pay $1,350 for the inconvenience. "If the substitute transportation is scheduled to get you to your destination more than two hours later (four hours internationally)... the compensation [is] 400% of your one-way fare, $1350 maximum." That maximum would fit United's predicament, since the next scheduled flight to Louisville was a full day later. http://money.cnn.com/2017/04/11/news/unite...ster/index.html How to make a PR crisis a total disaster

"He was a really sweet man," John Klaassen, a teacher who was traveling on a school trip in Chicago, told CNN's Don Lemon in an interview April 10. Klaassen told Lemon that the 69-year-old man, who has not been identified, chatted with some of his students before being told his seat was given to an airline worker. At that point, the man became inconsolable and repeatedly refused to leave. He was forcibly removed by police and then taken to the hospital with injuries from the confrontation. https://www.yahoo.com/news/really-sweet-man...-024108685.html https://www.reddit.com/user/USBrock United Breaks Guitars....greatest country song of all-time, 17 million hits and counting

http://finance.yahoo.com/quote/UAL?p=UAL United stock already down close to 4%. $865 million dollars just disappeared into thin air. Over $200-400 extra they wouldn't incentivize to wait for another flight, the idiotic CEO's comments, and pissing off all of China and 90% of anyone who's ever flown United in the past. Great work. United will probably sue Chicago Aviation and those security officers. More lawyers getting rich...

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Apr 11, 2017 -> 07:47 AM) Everyone continues to say United overbooked, they didn't do that. They were trying to move a flight crew to Louisville https://www.yahoo.com/news/united-passenger...-105909157.html Called it. 210 million online hits in China, already. Apparently witnesses reported he said he was targeted for being Chinese. Goodbye United profits in China. Glad I'm fly Korean Airlines coming back this summer. Btw, You guys are better defenders than their CEO. He loses his job over this...what would only have been another $200-400 in incentives/vouchers. If the captain of the plane was already on board, he was in charge of everything that happened on that plane from the moment he entered the cockpit.

QUOTE (2005thxfrthmmrs @ Apr 11, 2017 -> 07:44 AM) Since 2014, there are only 9 times a qualified player finished with K rate above 30%, and the highest was 33%. Chris Carter, Chris Davis, Adam Dunn, and one Michael Taylor made up for most of those 9 finishes, and they are perennial .210, .220 hitters. If Moncada comes up and hits .230 and strikes out 35% of the time in the first year, I'm sure most people here will panic instead of "being able to live with it", and wants him sent back to the minors to get more seasoning. Moncada won't have an average below .260 with that speed and power combination. http://thebaseballcube.com/players/profile...P=Michael-Trout Trout in the minors, 211/1117=19% I doubt Moncada finishes higher than 25% in AAA. We'll see. Tim Anderson's 193/673 at the major league level, that's closing in on 30%.

Updated teams interested in Q
QUOTE (oldsox @ Apr 11, 2017 -> 06:03 AM) Same here, but Rox will then try to make Hoffman the centerpiece of the Q trade. I don't like that. When Dahl and Desmond get off the DL, they should be interesting team to watch. Remember, Rockies made a horrible trade when they sent Tulo to Toronto, and all they have left is Hoffman. They got lucky when Story emerged as ML quality SS, but they still made a horrible deal. All I'm saying is, they might be gun shy to pull off a major trade, but they do have some interesting pieces. No way they risk another TJ second surgery case study with Giolito already a significant bust risk. No to Hoffman.

The Chicago Department of Aviation, meanwhile, said its security officer was placed on leave "pending a thorough review of the situation." Typically, the Chicago Fire Department handles all medical emergencies at O'Hare. The fire department was not involved in this case, however. Meanwhile, Democratic U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky of Evanston blamed United Airlines for the situation, saying she was appalled. "United had overbooked its own flight and chose to forcibly remove a passenger instead of increasing their offer until a passenger chose to leave the flight willingly. Their attempt to pass the buck by blaming the Chicago Police Department for the incident demonstrates that they do not understand the gravity of this incident," she said. "At a minimum, United Airlines must immediately change their policy and give full restitution and compensation to the victim. This is far from the end of the story." http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20170410/news/170419951/ So lawsuits pending for United, Republic Airways, the Chicago Department of Aviation....as well as Congressional hearings.

Kaylyn Davis, who says her husband was on the flight on Sunday evening, posted the video in which the passenger is standing in the aisle saying “just kill me” over and over again while covered in blood. Another video shows the passenger saying “I have to go home.” When a Twitter user asked whether he is saying, “just kill me,” Davis responded, “That is what I heard. He hit his head pretty hard earlier. He looks terrified and very confused.” http://www.sfgate.com/entertainment/the-wr...ll-11064014.php Now it gets even worse. Watch this video. He was obviously in shock. Muttering "just kill me" over and over and over again.

2017 Democratic Thread
QUOTE (Reddy @ Apr 5, 2017 -> 07:04 PM) I'm heading down there next week to work on the campaign the last week of the race. It'll be interesting for sure! $8 million plus already raised for him, crazy numbers for a Congressional race. Looks like he's polling in the low 40's, the likeliest path to win is splitting the GOP votes (11 running?) enough to get 50% and avoid the runoff, but that's looking highly improbable. April 18th vote, yes? Was laughing because one of the main GOP contenders was claiming his having Conway's, Sarah Huckabee's and Jared Kushner's numbers on his speed dial uniquely qualified him for winning the Trump Bloc. https://www.aol.com/article/news/2017/04/09...les-r/22032809/

http://www.cnn.com/2017/04/10/politics/map...tate/index.html 58% of Congressional races are now "safe" with +/-10 margins for GOP and Dems 133 GOP seats are safe 118 Dem seats are considered safe (251/435) Significantly up from past decades....can we say GERRYMANDERING? Looking at the map of the entire country, it seems like almost EVERYONE is a Republican, and yet the popular vote margin was 2.9+ million because of California and the East Coast.

"Everybody has their price. If they had allowed the agent to offer a higher incentive, we may never have heard about this," said Henry Harteveldt, a travel industry analyst and founder of Atmosphere Research Group. ... United was in a classic no-win situation: having security remove the passenger or allowing him to disobey their legally permissible request. Both have bad outcomes," DePaul University School for Public Service professor Joseph Schwieterman said in an email. Passengers sometimes think airlines will give in to avoid a scene, but that's usually not the case, he said. Others thought the airline could have resolved the situation with a lot less disruption if it had been willing to be a little more flexible. United could have asked passengers why they were traveling or considered moving to the next name on the list when a passenger flat-out refused to budge, said George Hobica, founder and president of Airfarewatchdog, an airfare listing and travel advice site. "If United had crashed a plane, it would have been less of a PR disaster than this. It just looks so cruel, and inexplicable and arbitrary," he said. http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-...0410-story.html

Moncada has a 29% strikeout rate in 731 minor league at-bats, 213/731. But a 395 OBP. I'm pretty sure everyone could live with a 30-35% K rate his first year or two in the majors as long as his OPS was over 800 and his OBP was over 350. That's not even taking into consideration the damage he can do with his speed on the basepaths.
-
Cody Asche
http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/pro...sp?P=cody-asche 681 career OPS in nearly 1200 MLB at-bats. If he could approach his minor league average of 794, he might be close to a split/platoon DH, but anything sub 750 isn't going to come close to an "average" DH/RF/LF in the American League. Avi Garcia is at at 703 OPS for almost 1500 MLB at-bats. At least he still has a bit of the age/potential/late development argument in his favor. But Avi averaging 14-16 homers per season just isn't good enough with his serious defensive liabilities.
-
4/10 Games
Yeah, the key number is OBP. We can quibble over 25% vs. 30% vs. 35% for a K rate, but the bottom line is getting on base, being a disruptor and scoring runs if he's not hitting the ball over the fence.

3 walks in one game. Beat Tim Anderson's first 2-3 months last year? 4 walks total, 7 K's (3 yesterday), 9/22 on the season, .409

Most Airlines just don't seem to care
http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-...#nt=oft02a-1la1 Current front page story at the Tribune (United can sue their Pr firm now, too) Videos of a United Airlines passenger being forcibly dragged from his seat to make room for airline crew members on a Sunday overbooked flight at O'Hare International Airport have been viewed more than 1 million times, and the airline's CEO on Monday called the incident "an upsetting event to all of us here at United." "I apologize for having to re-accommodate these customers. Our team is moving with a sense of urgency to work with the authorities and conduct our own detailed review of what happened," United CEO Oscar Munoz said in a statement Monday. Munoz said the airline is trying to reach the passenger to "further address and resolve this situation." .... Hobart said United tries to come up with a reasonable compensation offer, but "there comes a point where you're not going to get volunteers." At that point, United's contract of carriage says the airline can select passengers to bump to a later flight, based on a priority system that can take into account how much passengers paid, how often they fly, whether missing that flight could affect a connecting flight and how early they checked in. People with disabilities and unaccompanied minors are generally last to be bumped (anyone over 60 or 65 is not also on the priority list? My comment). Usually, passengers — however angry — comply with the airline's orders. But even if it's an unusual situation, it raises questions about what rights passengers have when being removed from a flight against their will, Harteveldt said. So another point about the lawsuit is not following their own procedure to instead randomly select...which will probably be proven over time to be untrue as well since they would never randomly select anyone in a section other than coach/economy class to kick off.

And it's bringing out even more and more complaints about United from everyone they've screwed...Willits Tower protests against UAL corporate hq, coming soon. Greg, these stories are proof America is worse than ever after Trump was elected!!! We were on United from Hartford to Tucson with a stop in Denver on 12/17/16. There was a storm that messed up travel across US that day. We knew to leave for the airport early because of weather. Seems the flight crew didn't have that common sense. They arrived late for the flight so we sat on the plane as they fueled and de-iced and were late taking off. I don't know if that would have made much of a difference as by the time we were fueled, there was a ground hold in Denver. We sat on the plane for three hours waiting to take off. we had to be de-iced a second time. We finally landed in Denver and sat on the tarmac for another 1 1/2 hours waiting for an open gate. Of course, we missed our connecting flight to Tucson. We should have arrived in Tucson at 1:15pm on 12/17. United re-booked our connecting flight for 10:15 on 12/17, arriving in Tucson around midnight 12/18. We had scattered seats throughout the plane. There were two earlier flights at 4:00 and 6:30 and together but they were "premium seats". As i had booked and paid for "premium seats" on the flight we missed, I think I should have been allowed seats on these flights. I was told to go to customer service by a gate attendant. Customer service line was, no exaggeration, 400 people long with two people at the desk! I booked online and AGAIN paid for premium seats on the 6:30 flight. I tried to call United Airlines while we waited to see if I could be refunded the $160 that I PAID AGAIN for "premium seats" and was on hold for 1 1/2 hours until we stood in line to board our flight. We waited in line until 9:30pm to be finally told this flight was canceled. The temperature in Denver was -16 and just about every airlines was affected. We NOW had to wait in line at the dreaded customer service to book flights out of Denver to Tucson. We waited in line until 12:30am 12/18/16 when we FINALLY got our turn at the desk to be told there was one seat out on the 11:15 flight on12/18/16 and after that the best UA could do was place us on stand-by for 12/21/16. No offer of compensation FOR ANYTHING. Acoording to United Airlines, we were airport orphans for the next three days. They did give us a cute "amenities bag" of toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant toilette, a comb, mouthwash and laundry detergent. I guess we could wash the clothes we had on and sit naked in the airport until they dried. I was able to book seats on American Airlines for 5:30am on 12/18/16 using my frequent flier miles plus an additional $320 in fees to Tucson with a stop in Dallas from Denver. American Airlines was experiencing the same weather conditions as United Airlines but they had seats for a flight 4 hours later while United Airlines, the airlines that I was originally flying, couldn't get us flights until 3 DAYS LATER and that was stand-by only. No apologies from UA, NO OFFER OF EVEN A MEAL! We wandered Denver airport looking for food. We found out that airports have to have one restaurant open at night and that restaurant was in another terminal, McDonald's. And the line was over an hour wait with one poor employee serving all those stranded customers. She deserved a medal! LONG STORY SHORT- after that experience and treatment, lack of consideration, total lack of coordination by United Airlines, I WAS NEVER flying United Airlines again. After the incident with the girls in leggings at DENVER, I was certain to never fly UA. After this latest incident, of causing injury and forcefully removing a paying customer, I will make sure EVERYONE I know NEVER FLIES UNITED AIRLINES. Forget the doctor part. We're having enough problems in our country when we pick on seniors and that's not exactly the right image we want to send to anyone from a foreign country, either. It's 4:21 a.m. in China, and I know when everyone sees this on Chinese social media, United will have hundreds of millions pissed off if they find out he's Chinese or Singaporean. They don't mess around. Just look at what they're doing to Lotte Department stores (most famous Korean Departmen Store/Real Estate company) when they sold the land to the ROK government to install the THAAD missile system. Maybe he's Korean or Japanese, but we'll find out soon enough when this goes out around the world. https://www.yahoo.com/news/united-passenger...-134930951.html There are already 14,000+ negative reactions just to this article, multiply that by a factor of 8-10x. If you look closely in the second video, his left leg is trapped under the FOLDING arm rest. Instead of the idiot US Marshal lifting the arm rest first, he tugs the gentleman, while screaming as hard as he can until an audible snap can be heard. I am almost certain this man was screaming the way he was, then went instantly silent afterwords because his Femur has been broken, or dislocated. This is #$%$ disgusting, and it doesn't matter who you are, where you are from, EVERYONE DESERVES TO BE TREATED LIKE A PERSON

2017 Republican Thread
QUOTE (greg775 @ Apr 9, 2017 -> 11:06 AM) Great post. But my take is basically in response to the criminals/crazies who might want to prey on people by saying simply, "I identify as a female" and go into the women's room. Heaven forbid, in the not so distant history of my own Catholic religion, we have people who chose professions just to be close to kids so they could prey on them. I've heard the saying a million times that life isn't fair. If you have male private parts shouldn't you have to go to the men's room? Why are we discriminating here the other way or at least be escorted in there? What if it's my lifelong goal to prey on kids. Wouldn't this be another way to do so if you had a sick mind?? a.) I'm surprised nobody agrees with me. I just feel like it's not too much to ask people to use the bathroom of their genetic makeup. Maybe we need to just simply change the bathroom setup across America and allow only one person in at a time to make sure we don't step on anybody's rights. Inconvenience, yes, but this is kind of a non sequitir allowing people with male parts into female bathrooms. Makes little sense. 2.) Yes when walking into the Subway at the same time as the cross dresser with high heels and a dress I made that decision to not eat there that night. I hadn't walked in yet. I wouldn't be rude enough to leave if I had already been in there like the other time. I know it can be painful for a person with male private parts who identifies as a female. I heard from Bruce Jenner and have read the suicide rate is very high. Of course I feel badly about that. If it saves lives then I'm all for changing the bathrooms and having just one person go in at a time. Anybody experiencing mental anguish deserves relief that is for sure. But we also have to keep those who prey on kids at bay. Why not do what I suggest? We must have a system now in which one person at a time and only one are allowed in bathrooms to make sure we satisfy everybody's rights here. What about a coach of the girls' hs volleyball team being a lesbian, the wrestling or football coach a pedophile or gay man? How can you protect them then? Isn't it much more likely something might happen in a shared shower than a public bathroom? Do we have any examples of all these bathroom assaults going on to point to? What about changing rooms in clothing stores (the ones not yet wiped out by Amazon.com)? Couldn't they be just as alluring for attackers?

4/8 Games
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Apr 8, 2017 -> 10:22 PM) Worrying about Giolito is totally warranted but Fulmer was throwing 90-91 last night and Lopez 92-93 on Thursday according to that Charlotte gun. The logical explanation is the gun is 2-3 mph slow. That would put Fulmer at 92-94, Lopez at 94-96 and Giolito at 91-93, roughly. Fulmer pretty consistently threw 92-93 last year in the big leagues. Dunning will move fast...typically, staying through the league's All-Star game in June and then they'll push him up and maybe he ends in Winston-Salem or even Birmingham depending on which team's in the playoffs in early Sept. They're certainly in no rush, as they already have Kopech, Fulmer, Giolito and Adams ahead of him. Moncada actually has the lowest OPS of those 2-6 hitters at Charlotte. 1. W.Garcia 1.480 2. Hayes/Delmonico 1.458 4. Kevan Smith 1.283 5. Moncada 1.217 (8/16, only 3 k's)

8 k's, wiped out the guy who homered with offspeed pitch after getting tagged by a hard hit ball hit back up the middle. Shook it off. 9 k's. Runner advanced to second a steal. Kopech is entertaining, now a passed ball on catcher. 10 k's. Almost 70 pitches through 4. Fun stuff.
