5/27 Games
JA Happ was the answer to the draft pick....him and Benitendi were the hitters the Sox should have been looking at. Rich get richer. Sox just keep floating along in the midst of mediocrity.

2016 Democratic Thread
Your article's been INTERCEPTED by Klay Thompson. Greg, the more you pile on her, the more you actually get people to want to support her. You're actually having the opposite of your intended effect, and the harder you try (how can the country possibly not see these things about her and be absolutely outraged???), the more difficult it's going to be to convince someone to change their minds. Let's say you have spent 1-2 weeks of your life typing anti-Hillary messages here and perhaps at other sites. If you knew that you caused more people to back her than would have if you had said nothing at all, would it give you pause? How many times at this site have you seen anyone emerge "enlightened" and change a position about anything? It's very rare.

Trayce Thompson
Jackson's been doing better recently, but we still need another bat who can preferably play CF well enough to keep Eaton in RF. Thompson on the team would have moved Cabrera to DH, and given us one of the best defensive outfields in baseball. Poor Greg. That bet on OKC isn't looking too hot about right now.

Can Someone Honestly Tell Me ONE Thing That Ventura Does Well?
They're going to need to change managers at some point just to see if the talent they have on the roster can perform at a level capable of competing in 2017... Otherwise, there's no point in not trading Frazier, Cabrera and Lawrie for whatever they can get. Does anyone have confidence having watched all this transpire over the last 3 weeks (really started in Baltimore with Albers starting to struggle, and Latos) that Ventura's going to rally this team back from the brink? After the last two weeks of the 2012 season, after the start to the 2015 season and now with this complete collapse? It's hard to imagine absorbing three completely disheartening losses like this (especially against a crippled Royals team) and do much more than play .500 baseball (at best) the rest of the way. We're 2 games under .500 now if you take away those games with Minnesota. Otoh, those who watched the first 33 games will tell you we obviously have the ability to be an 86-90 win team.

White Sox Acquire James Shields
If you look at his stats the last 2-3 months in the 2014 season, and into the playoffs...I can't see where this would be very encouraging. Need further evidence, it's Cueto and Shark in the same division. Now if this whole thing is about bringing in yet another experienced winner, veteran leader, clubhouse presence...etc., it really makes you wonder what's going on in that clubhouse about now. With all the innings he threw for the Rays all those years, the tank is much closer to empty than full at this point. The last thing they could afford is for someone making that kind of money in the rotation to go down to TJ surgery and destroy the remaining payroll flexibility for two more years.

Cleveland outdrew us? Attendance down 13% so far
QUOTE (ewokpelts @ May 28, 2016 -> 06:48 PM) Now that the sox are back to being a s*** team, I think this attendance talk is silly. We'll actually now be a crap team that drew decently, assuming 1.9 million tix have already sold according to tv reports. Well, you can also put to bed the idea "the White Sox have to start out hot" because if they miss the playoffs again, the fans won't care next year until around the middle of July...

White Sox Acquire James Shields
QUOTE (Lillian @ May 28, 2016 -> 06:14 PM) I can't imagine that the Sox would take on that contract, and give up young talent. That would be very foolish. Calling Erik Johnson and Tatis (too bad he can't hit like his dad) talent are pushing it...and Erik really deserves a chance with another organization with the way the White Sox have treated him, anyway. It's the financial part of it that's most alarming and reactionary.

is it too late for me to join the "hey were in first place still&
QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ May 28, 2016 -> 06:17 PM) Sox are overall 9-8 against the division. 6-0 against the Twins. Do the math. They can't beat Cleveland, they can't beat K.C. They have ZERO chance if that doesn't change. (And they haven't beaten teams in the division on a regular basis in years...) Mark Or really played well at home...perhaps since 2008 (or that 26-5 stretch in 2010, but even most of that was on the road if memory serves correctly, against NL East teams).

is it too late for me to join the "hey were in first place still&
I remember the good 'ol days when Lip was perceived to be fairly optimistic over at WSI. Amazing what all this losing will do to fans over time. It gets to the point where you expect things to go wrong so you can't be too surprised or upset....but then, when they were 6 outs from being 14 games over .500 (and somehow surviving the previous game and getting a grand slam from Frazier), you could finally feel things turning for the better and a playoff appearance in the offing. It didn't feel automatic, but pretty close to "likely" at least. And, to top it off, we don't even have the right to suffer like Cubs, Padres, Mariners or Indians fans, because it's only been 11 years since the World Series!!! Heck, even the Marlins got two World Series titles to go with all their suffering, two within the span of six years.

White Sox Acquire James Shields
Trying to take focus off baseball for awhile, decided to read HIROSHIMA by John Hershey to put things in perspective. Still hoping this trade doesn't go through unless the Padres are eating roughly $16-18 million out of the $56 million we'd end up owing.

5/28 Game thread: @Kansas City, 1:15pm, WGN
Balta's alive!!! Watched the replay of that last pitch to Eibner. Talk about center-cut. Guess you can't blame Kahnle after he was put in that position in the first place and getting squeezed on the strike zone, your primary thought is not to walk him.

White Sox Acquire James Shields
15:$10M, 16:$21M, 17:$21M, 18:$21M, 19:$16M club option ($2M buyout) perks: hotel suite on road deal does not include no-trade clause, but Shields may opt out of contract after 2016 season (no later than 3 days after World Series) $44 million, plus $14 million this year. $58 million total. Would still be one of the five biggest contracts in Sox history. Now it's getting REALLY infuriating they didn't add that hitter in the offseason when they had the opportunity to do so. (Of course, with the White Sox luck, it would have been Gordon instead of Cespedes/Fowler/Desmond and we'd be stuck with another bad deal.)

5/28 Game thread: @Kansas City, 1:15pm, WGN
Well, at least the Tigers are losing 12-3. They can't get to within 1 1/2 games. Maybe Baltimore can mount a similar comeback, down 10-4 now, lol...

Another overreaction I'm done with this team thread
You know there's a BIG problem when fans feel like there might be more benefit to the long-term future of the organization when they lose (and openly root for that to occur)...whether the losing's consequence/perceived benefit is about higher draft picks or Robin Ventura getting fired, Hahn, KW, etc.
-
White Sox Acquire James Shields
Yeah yeah, and if we'd just gone 13-4 to get to 1/2 game game behind the Indians and tied with the Royals, etc. But psychology doesn't work that way.
-
White Sox Acquire James Shields
So much for adding the hitter we actually need about 2-3X as much... Well, then again, if Carson Fulmer's not to be counted on for 2017, they have to do SOMETHING, but this isn't the first move that comes to mind.
-
White Sox Acquire James Shields
Well, one thing's for sure. Shields was credited with being the main leader to turn the Royals around in 2013 and 2014. This would be an even bigger test, to right this sinking ship and fast. If nothing else, it buys Robin Ventura 2-3 more weeks of time. It's also almost comical how Miguel Gonzalez is going to lose his spot when he has nothing to do with losing his last couple of starts. Poor guy has 13 consecutive outings where he started and his team (Balt and the Sox) has lost. I'm sure he planned on having a much bigger 32nd birthday celebration last night when he left the game with a "safe" lead. Almost would rather replace Latos in the rotation, but that won't happen.

QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ May 28, 2016 -> 04:16 PM) I'll be sick yo see them trade for Shields. There's no point now. Just blow it all up and hit the reset button now. Now the stadium will go back to being a ghost town next home stand. Unless there's a national sado-masochism festival in town...

Another overreaction I'm done with this team thread
QUOTE (Deadpool @ May 28, 2016 -> 04:14 PM) Worst run team I can remember. How is JR okay with this? Fans will voice their frustration with their wallets which will swiftly be criticized by White Sox brass At least the Dollar Bill Blackhawks could draft KW at least has been successful at getting White Sox fans to turn on each other for not supporting the team...instead of focusing their anger at the most appropriate targets. That's been his biggest accomplishment by far the last five years or so, protecting his job.

Can Someone Honestly Tell Me ONE Thing That Ventura Does Well?
QUOTE (fathom @ May 28, 2016 -> 04:12 PM) Some tweets by respected baseball writers: Jonah KeriVerified account @jonahkeri 44m44 minutes ago Better leave David Robertson in for 9 more hits, just to be sure Rany Jazayerli @jazayerli 29m29 minutes ago Special shoutout to Robin Ventura, who among other things deliberately walked the bases loaded, ensuring his pitcher had no margin for error Joe Sheehan @joe_sheehan 46m46 minutes ago There's a pretty good "30 For 30" to be done on Robin Ventura's bullpen management the last 18 hours or so. If the Red Sox just pulled this comeback off, it would become an instant ESPN CLASSIC program.

Can Someone Honestly Tell Me ONE Thing That Ventura Does Well?
Getting openly mocked by Royals fans...Rany is a huge one. THE BIGGEST IRONY IS THAT VENTURA USED THE EXCUSE OF NOT WANTING TO WALK HOSMER FOR JONES TO FACE PEREZ IN A VERY SIMILAR SITUATION LESS THAN 24 HOURS AGO...BECAUSE IT WOULD HAVE PUT TOO MUCH PRESSURE ON THE MUCH MORE EXPERIENCED NATE JONES.

is it too late for me to join the "hey were in first place still&
2007 is NOT a season you want to be compared to, lol... And, to think, if only Ventura had managed the bullpen correctly Friday night, he wouldn't have felt the need to force him into a game in a dreaded non-closing situation just to get some work in because he would have recorded the save last night and the White Sox would now be up 2 1/2 games on CLE and 4 on the Royals. It never fails...

White Sox Acquire James Shields
If they trade Tim Anderson for a middling starting pitcher when that's not even on the Top 10 list of team needs at the moment...I will petition Harvard to retroactively take back Hahn's JD degree.

is it too late for me to join the "hey were in first place still&
Waiting for Jim Margalus to lose it at SSS...SOMEONE has to go off, if it's not going to be KW anymore. This has to be the most shocking White Sox loss, that and one they ALSO lost to KC in August or September 2005 when I went to bed (was working in Colombia as the time) and when I woke up, a similar lead had disappeared and the panic really started to set in about the Indians catching the Sox...2005 is about all we have left to hold onto. Just plug that DVD back into the player to counteract this, I guess.

5/28 Game thread: @Kansas City, 1:15pm, WGN
QUOTE (Footlongcomiskeydog @ May 28, 2016 -> 03:57 PM) This game may end up being a pretty one in Sox history. It is time to throw out any thoughts of Hahn or KW's "3 year" plan. No need to trade for Shields or take on any expensive contracts. This team has absolutely no chance to compete in the Central anytime soon. Cleveland is going be very good for the next 2-3 years and KC is just KC. They own the Sox and that doesn't look like it is going to end any time soon. Step one=Fire Ventura immediately. Step 2= fire KW and Hahn in the offseason. Step 3 = start the rebuild Getting the most value out of players like Frazier might happen at this year's deadline, though. Hard to imagine reading Fathom talking just 24 hours ago about signing him to a contract extension when, as of today, it feels just as likely they'll end up trading him. Tigers just scored two to tie it up in OAK. Blood is in the water, officially. Crazy to imagine the Tigers could pass us by Monday.
