  1. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 5, 2015 -> 06:25 AM) What I find impressive is that they went all out on acquiring blue chip hitters, yet managed to find a #1 and #3 pitcher basically off the scrap heap. (Yes, I realize they are taking advantage of the NL, but my point still stands) Here's where we bring up Quintana. However, there's no doubt Arrieta's pitching like an ace and Hammel surprisingly effective once again.
  2. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 5, 2015 -> 05:57 AM) I wish everyone would just not bring Guillen's name up at all. That was my nice way of putting it when I really wanted to say STFU about him. Would you hire Judas ? Would you hire your best friend who slept with your wife ? Would you hire a guy who tried to extort money from you ?? That's what Guillen is ,was, and shall ever be. Leaving the White Sox for a higher salary is equivalent to betraying Jesus? C'mon, Dombrowski's doing the same exact thing, basically. When he signs for $8-10 million per season with Boston, LAA, Toronto or Seattle, should he be burned in effigy or hung from lampposts in Detroit?
  3. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 5, 2015 -> 06:00 AM) Lmao Caulfield, you sure love to make stuff up. Btw, Almora was born and raised in Florida His father, Albert Sr., played baseball in Cuba before he defected to the United States.[4] Albert began training with his father when he was three years old.[1][4] He's not Hispanic? But, by that qualification, Carlos Rodon should also be listed. There's no discernible difference in Latin American results between the two organizations?

  5. http://www.freep.com/story/sports/2015/08/...litch/31138765/ Free Press sportswriter takes the Ilitches to task... http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/i...s-end-of-an-era Chrstina Kahrl opinion Jeff Passan Last year a Brown student named Lewis Pollis wrote his senior thesis on just how undervalued front-office personnel truly are. The paper starts off with a stunning claim: one standard deviation of a GM's ability to find players is worth nearly eight wins above replacement – or more than $50 million a year. Essentially, Pollis wrote, a great GM can have almost as big of an impact annually as Mike Trout. Pollis estimated the value between the best and worst free-agent buyers (San Francisco's Brian Sabean on top and ex-Baltimore GM Jim Beattie at the bottom) at nearly $43 million a year, and that's to say nothing of their abilities to pull off trades or draft and develop. Granted, Pollis' numbers pegged Dombrowski below average, dragged down by the 119-loss season as well as other rebuilding projects he took over. In reality, those only strengthened his reputation. He can come into a strong situation and make it stronger. He can come into a dumpster fire and hose it into tranquility. Dombrowski's standing among executives is unparalleled. http://sports.yahoo.com/news/why-dave-domb...-230836111.html http://sabr.org/sites/default/files/Pollis..._It-2014-04.pdf Page 68-69 has the ratings. Hahn was average, KW in the bottom quartile and Neal Huntington, Dayton Moore, Randy Smith, John Hart, Dean Taylor and Jim Beattie as the six worst. Ed Lynch and Dan Evans both fared surprisingly well, as did Omar Minaya.
  6. QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Aug 5, 2015 -> 12:08 AM) 50 of the last 55, to be exact. But hey! Don't be bitter now, as some others would wag their sanctimonious fingers at you and admonish you for being. Don't be bitter! It's just baseball, dontcha know. A win and a loss - bah! What's the difference! If you don't like the results, why, just go and get another hobby, they would tell you. How dare you expect more! And if it's blame you are seeking to assign, well then, look no further than the mirror, Fair Fan. It is all your fault! You and all of your excuses for not coming out to the ballpark - the Sox' lack of success is all yer fault! Why... Lol - I can't even keep that charade up of that ridiculous mindset, it's so absurd. But yes, to the poster's credit for pointing out, yet another wasted summer. When will it all change for the better? Time will tell, I reckon. A new management team seems like it would be a good start, but then there's still the issue of the "hands-on" owner who would still ultimately call the shots. He's overruled even the current management team over the years over strategic decisions, and look how well that's worked out for us. Oy! Looks like we are in for more of the same as long as the status quo remains in place! Well, at least this year there wasn't ridiculous meeting with the position players like 2006 when Konerko, Dye and Thome all professed they had enough horses in the clubhouse to get it done. Honestly, what players are going to openly tell the GM or owner it would probably be better to add some more talent?
  7. QUOTE (captain54 @ Aug 4, 2015 -> 11:50 PM) That was four years ago and I think most fans' memory is probably a little short in that respect. Remember, Robin was the Anti-Ozzie, and there was gonna be a newer, happier franchise once Ozzie was gone.. Well, it hasn't exactly turned out that way… Yes, Robin has 1 year left on his contract, but I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that Reinsdorf is a smart enough business man, though loyal, to ease Robin out replacing him with Ozzie next year, if it meant a possible uptick in ST sales for 2016... True.. Ozzie doesn't know when to shut up, but neither did DaCoach and the DaCoach is still one popular guy in Chicago..why? because Chicago fans are big and boisterous themselves with their opinions.. I'm not saying Ozzie is the best choice to replace Robin.. But he certainly would be a great choice to maybe generate some interest in this franchise that continues toward irrelevancy in this town.. This is the equivalent of taking Donald Trump completely serious as a legitimate candidate...when both he and Ozzie are mostly just entertainers now. Veeck might have tried it, but it won't happen with KW around. Then again, JR bringing Guillen back might force Kenny to resign out of pride.
  8. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Aug 4, 2015 -> 11:19 PM) Been trying to think of a way to sum up the Sox organization the last 10 years. I can't do it in one sentence but these come close: "One step forward...two steps back." "Loyalty without Accountability" "When in doubt, blame the fans" It's a shame that another summer has been flushed right down the toilet. When all is said and done it'll be six of the last nine of them. Beyond sad now. Mark Hope Doesn't Float To be more precise, five out of the last seven seasons, with only the 2012 team having a realistic chance over the final two weeks. 2011 (Dunn) and the first two months of 2015 were incredibly frustrating for fans who had high hopes after those seemingly productive offseasons. The defensive letdowns, baserunning and fundamentals/execution have been amongst the worst of any recent Sox clubs. To top it off, Sale and Rodon are scuffling and Samardzija's still on the roster. I'm not sure what's more depressing, the Sox or the current state of presidential politics...
  9. According to this metric, Marco Rubio is leading the G.O.P. race, with a net positive rating of sixty-one per cent. Walker is in second place, with fifty-five per cent, and Bush is in third place, with fifty per cent. Of course, if Trump performs well in the debates and avoids any major slip-ups, his numbers could improve. But the reason that political professionals monitor this figure closely is that it often indicates the amount of upward (and downward) potential a candidate has. Once negative impressions get entrenched, they are tough to shift, and, relative to most of the other candidates, Trump already has fairly high negative ratings among Republican voters. (Among the electorate as a whole, his negatives are much higher—the highest of any candidate in either party—but that’s not the point here.) Likeable vs. unlikeable among GOP voters
  10. http://www.nationaljournal.com/magazine/do...umping-20150731 Have to get The Greg's reaction to this one... Sums up the Trump "campaign" as well as any article yet written on the phenomenon. http://opportunitylives.com/three-ways-the...an-trump-trump/ Or this one...
  11. http://www.wsj.com/articles/democrats-need...lker-1438730749 Red meat for the base, but what else can Walker do? Will enough members of the middle class be left to buy/consume products when the last remaining unions and public pension plans are dismantled or promised benefits are cut back for the 47% who will never vote for a Republican? Then what? Sell mostly to China, India, Indonesia and Brazil?
  12. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Aug 4, 2015 -> 09:46 PM) Roland Hemond took over the worst franchise in major league baseball in September 1970. There were worse off then even the expansion teams. They had gone through the three worst seasons in franchise history, Comiskey Park was falling apart, they drew 495,000 for the season in 1970 and had very little talent. In two years they won 87 games in a strike shortened season and as Chuck Tanner told me, if Bill Melton doesn't blow out his back the A's dynasty never happens. Hemond build the 72 team, the 77 team and the 83 team. And he did it without any money as Allyn and Veeck were broke. Regarding the minor league system this quote from Veeck to Roland says it all, "sign him for as little as you can, we don't have any money..." And here's another one. Did you know (if not you can read about it Friday) Fernando was down to the Dodgers and the White Sox? He went to the Dodgers because they offered 20 (as in twenty) thousand dollars more. Oh here's yet one more. Hemond had to trade All Star catcher Ed Herrmann in April 1975 to the Yankees because he wanted a 2 (as in two) thousand dollar raise. The Sox couldn't afford to give it to him. Given those circumstances Hemond is one of the three best G.M.'s in franchise history in my opinion. I would have loved to have had Dombrowski as G.M. for most of these past seasons. Mark Amen. There's more to assessing managers and GM's than overall records or playoff appearances. Anyone who can consistently build the best farm system working for the Expos...and then turn around and succeed despite Huizenga and John Henry deserves a Medal of Honor. He was smart enough to get out of Miami before Loria arrived, but did miss the second World Series title come to fruition as a result.
  13. Interesting she's pulling the desperation race card out with Sanders, who seems more interested in economic equality than racial equality...perception-wise at least. That and his mostly white home state has been turned into he doesn't understand the needs of minorities. That's rich considering Bill's shenanigans coming into the South Carolina primary against Obama. She probably can't lose to Sanders or Biden, but both can damage her for the general election. The media and those two guys aren't going to just allow her to coast to the nomination.
  14. QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Aug 4, 2015 -> 09:34 PM) Just responding to some of the posts I read here tonight: "Robin Ventura's managerial career is over in two months." My response is I wouldn't bet the house on that. Robin is still very well liked by JR and I don't need to explain how much that counts in the organization. Plus he's under contract through next year. JR does not like to pay people not to manage. And of course if the Sox fired Robin that would make Kenny look bad. He hired him and had to talk him into it. This organization does not like to admit mistakes. "I'd still like Leyland or LaRussa. If they won't do it, Piniella. Of course I'd love Ozzie, but his mouth ruined possibilities of that." Leyland is 73 he's not coming back. Tony is already turning the D-backs around as president. Piniella is also older and has no desire to return. As far as Ozzie, he quit on the team in 2011, b****ed and moaned about his salary and contract. Insulted the fan base numerous times (remember his comments about the fans not liking his lineups? Or how about the infamous "pissing on statues" comment?) If Ozzie was the last manager on Earth, I'd say no thanks. As far as going 7-1 right before the trading deadline all I can say is that's typical White Sox luck if you look at the history of the franchise. Finally some were asking for a Micah Johnson return. He's currently on the DL (yet again) at Charlotte with left hamstring issues if I remember right. That marks the second straight year he's had leg issues. Running is his game...if he can't run basically he's useless. Could just be an unlucky guy who can not stay healthy. Mark If you can't count on Johnson (second consecutive year with second half hamstring issues and he hasn't run nearly as much as 2013), then you've got 3b, 2b, rf and c that need to be upgraded assuming they'll stick with LaRoche and Ramirez. You have Quintana and Sale as your main trade chips and are looking at a loss of roughly 4000-4500 per game season tickets...going off the fact they were up about 2000 over 2014. Not a great position to be in...and then trading Montas or Tim Anderson would look like they were abandoning the youth movement again (not to mention holding onto them at the deadline). Maybe you can live with one of Saladino and Sanchez but probably not both in the long-term. Let's just say we won't sell any ticket packages with a projected line-up having both of them starting in 2016.
  15. Fwiw, Chris Bassitt has a shutout going against the Orioles tonight. 6.2 ip, 4 h, 2 bb, 6 k....2.66 era on the season
  16. QUOTE (AustinIllini @ Aug 4, 2015 -> 09:07 PM) I can't help but marvel in it a bit. It's really incredible what they have done there. They look set up to win for a LONG time. They're a wild card team and their organizational goal is still to develop talent. They're sticking to their plan. Rick Hahn and Kenny Williams (if not them, Jerry Reinsdorf) need to wake up. Their way of doing things is over. Buying free agent talent and failing at drafting positional talent is not a roadmap for long term success. Make no mistake, I'm a White Sox fan, but I want to see the Cubs do well. They have little to do with "our guys" and the White Sox are just so infuriating at the moment. Not to mention Castro, Baez, Soler, Rondon, Gleyber Torres, Almora, Eloy Jimenez...doing a much better job with Hispanic/Latin American players as well. Essentially we've been shut out of 1/3rd of the talent market...with the only exceptions Alexei and Abreu. Quintana and Garcia came from other organizations. I guess we can claim Carlos Sanchez, too.
  17. Only the hapless Braves and White Sox below 24,000 tonight in attendance.... White Sox with 18,499 (bump up by 2000 from last night partly due to Sale/Archer?) Atlanta 18411 Would the attendance really be worse if we'd dealt Samardzija? Det 35039 Pitt 34993 Phil 28733 Cincy 25969 Wash 26112 (that's disappointing for them in a close playoff race) Nyy 48522 Tor 26504 Miami 23822
  18. This game got out of hand so quickly the only slightly compelling game is in Washington. Rizzo might be available as well if the Nationals don't make the playoffs. Nationals (Escobar) just booted the final out. D Backs can tie with two outs against Papelbon.
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 4, 2015 -> 08:27 PM) If it were the september callups you'd expect the whole league to show that effect and that def. isn't true. Maybe the Cell does get warmer those months, but again, why would it be focused on us rather than a league wide thing? I seriously think it's a strong indication we just wear these guys down. With the bullpen they had last year, there really wasn't much choice. If you go back to 2005, with that bullpen, it would be harder to explain...on the other hand, it's not like they were terribleat all, I think they were 8 games over .500 in September after struggling through August. Maybe August weather in Chicago? Is there also a correlation with rhe Cubs' starters in August, especially when they had more day games?
  20. QUOTE (Baron @ Aug 4, 2015 -> 08:35 PM) Alright I'm done for the night. Time to watch "They Live" Better to choose "It Follows"
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 4, 2015 -> 08:01 PM) League wide, over the last 6 years, maybe there's a trend downwards of about 0.05 runs on ERA in the 2nd half but it's darn close to first half = second half. Aren't there typically more runs scored per game at uSCF from mid July to the end of September...better weather, and then you have September call-ups diluting rosters with 25-33% of the teams auditioning pitchers for the following season?
  22. The least they could have done was get Parra. O's will be tied with Jays and both one game clear of the Twins if they win tonight. In the end, it probably wouldn't have been enough with the strikeout game stretch clearly having taken too much out of Sale.
  23. QUOTE (WhiteSoxLifer @ Aug 4, 2015 -> 07:48 PM) Problem is if you brought Dombrowski in with kenny still there, how much is Kenny going to have a say in things. Kenny needs to go to blue jays and let hahn or someone else actually take control I would get rid of both and let DD start from scratch.
  24. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 4, 2015 -> 07:47 PM) Let him face the Cubs!! Erik Johnson will end up giving up 6-7 runs as Sale takes an extended rest. Cubs make playoffs by one game, lol.
  25. QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Aug 4, 2015 -> 07:44 PM) It wasn't as if we were all on board for selling, or buying; with as many active members as post here you'd understand opinions differ. But not doing anything.......was pathetic and to me reeked of indecisiveness. Yeah I know, we'll never know the packages offered for Shark; but not selling him is looking to be a terrible move NOW, not even a week past the deadline. How is it going to looks months/years from now? SoxTalk might not exist in 5-6 years now the rate this franchise is going (and we know what if anything comes of that pick)...might even have a new team name.
