ALDS: Astros vs. Royals Thread
The Ghost of White Sox Rios past has come back to haunt the Gregster this time. All those taunts for years and years...karma. Dunn's next movie production will probably garner him an Oscar nomination for Actor in a Supporting Role. I think they'll be very careful to protect Madson from getting any time in this one after the other night. It's going to be all Herrera and two innings of Davis if Herrera gives up ANYTHING in the 8th. Morales might be brought in to match up with a selected lefty.

QUOTE (Vance Law @ Oct 14, 2015 -> 06:34 PM) Thank you. You proved my point. With different better players, the Sox got better results. The manager doesn't remotely f***ing matter. Not really...because Jennings was terrible, Petricka took a step or two back and the back end was bad. We spent a ton on Robertson and Duke and became merely below average. Wasn't exactly efficient allocation of resources.

ALDS: Astros vs. Royals Thread
Would be funny if Cueto sued the American League/Royals for lopping $25-50 million off his big FA contract... He's already blamed Sal Perez's positioning for having a five start stretch with a 9+ ERA, refused to pitch on three days' rest this series and blown off an important charity event with a lame excuse.

QUOTE (Vance Law @ Oct 14, 2015 -> 06:14 PM) Was bad at shortstop initially. Then he was good at shortstop. Or it could be shifting him all over the field (see Beckham, Semien, Viciedo) wasn't helpful for him settling in and becoming comfortable at one position. 90% of it was confidence in knowing the position was his in 2009.

You're giving Ventura more credit than Hahn for Albers, Robertson, Duke and Jones' recovery/health? Also, it literally would have been impossible to be worse. And we still had a lot of blown saves.

Maybe take Shark off the Soxtalk banner?
Better yet, Bryant/Schwarber/Soler/Rizzo all attired in Sox jerseys. Then SoxTalk can make the national news like McNally's did last week.

Not stopping at a stop sign? Really police?
Most workers in America can only dream of eye and dental insurance. Luckily, as a teacher we had both, but of course now teachers' unions are also under fire for fighting for benefits for their workers so that eventually will be cut out as well. Just have a baby in China. As long as you are married, it only costs about $500-1000. Of course, you have to marry a Chinese woman. If you aren't married, the woman or couple bear all the costs...even for future pre K - 12 education, since the child doesn't exist technically and can't attend a government school. Hence, the only single moms are rich celebrities.

Except everyone acknowledges Ozzie was a very effective manager (especially handling the bullpen and giving starters like Garland more rope than Manuel) in his first five or so years on the job. The biggest complaints were the Sunday line-ups and benching Anderson for Mackowiak in 2006. Maybe showing too much preference or deference to veterans vs. younger position players. In the end, he was also right to put the brakes on the Beckham and Viciedo worship.

White Sox ranked 85th out of 122 major sports franchises
How many CEO's get to keep their jobs hen they consistently underperform on earnings per share by using the defense, "well, we were projected by numerous algorithms and models/simulations to perform much better than we actually did in reality. Just be patient and trust the process...eventually we'll get it right!"

QUOTE (Vance Law @ Oct 14, 2015 -> 05:08 PM) Brian Anderson, Ryan Sweeney, Alexei, Sanchez, Saladino, Trayce. Chris Getz and Eduardo Escobar both not bad. How did they develop Ramirez? It took them half a season to even realize he might be able to stick in the infield, and he was playing mostly 2b then, and CF. Of course, Cabrera was the starter, but nobody projected him as more than a utility player. One of those fortunate situations like Quintana where we ended up with surplus value on a low-risk investment. More of the credit probably goes to Omar Vizquel than Cora/Guillen.

Blue Jays vs Rangers Series thread
Still think the Blue Jays are the much better team. Imagine them lining up with the Cubs in the World Series. Will set homer records, but the weather in Chicago will probably have taken a turn for the worse by then.

Blue Jays vs Rangers Series thread
Cecil was out due to injury, too. Rangers absolutely jinxed by poor fielding in key moments of the post-season for the entire decade... Hamels will be the tough luck loser. Dyson hadn't given up a homer since his first outing of season, 31 ip as a reliever.

Not to mention Miguel Sano and the Twins (yet another impact infielder at a premium position)....they finished exactly how we were projected to by most experts.

QUOTE (shysocks @ Oct 14, 2015 -> 09:44 AM) I could come up with a lot more examples of teams who can't operate that way than you can cite teams who can. If only they all played in a national landmark, with a ready supply of tourists to help fill it even if they're bad. Cardinals are closest...St. Louis Arch, Dred Scott Courthouse, Grant's Farm, Union Station, Mississippi River. Stadiums, not so much. But Las Vegas and Florida get terrible support for baseball. Let's not forget the Arizona transplants/snowbirds for spring training as well, another Cubs' revenue source.

Matheny, Ausmus and Ventura were all eventually exposed...the no prior experience needed hiring strategy should go back to the drawing board.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 14, 2015 -> 09:36 AM) No. The Sox fans don't allow the team to operate that way. Fine. Let's get creative. Kickstarter or gofundme drive to acquire the next Emilio Bonifacio or Gordon Beckham. That will surely draw some attention from the front office.

White Sox ranked 85th out of 122 major sports franchises
Sox fans take pride in emptying the stadium when the team sucks because we care more about pure baseball than babes bedecked in bedazzling bikinis blitzing back beers before Bryant bats.

Because Kauffman was more like Mike Illitch than Sam Walton/David Glass. Hobbyist, money/profitability wasn't the main point. There's also lots of info supporting the fact that the number of fans attending Cubs games and White Sox fans from within a fifty mile radius is virtually identical, or at least was until 2013-2015. The other 40% of attendance for the Cubs is much more regional...the senior citizens buses or I-Cubs fans coming from Des Moines for a two or three day trip to Chicago and back. Surely, part of the reason is/was Harry Caray, WGN, the babes in the stands, a three hour beer/party/celebrity 7th inning stretch skit...with baseball as an additional bonus as well. The White Sox completely lost Iowa, most of Indiana, western Michigan, western WI/SE Minnesota. Having the AAA and Midwest teams close by helps as well. You can't argue the location of minor league teams is helpful for us. In comparison, look at the Royals, Rangers, etc. Very strategic. Before, the White Sox had South Bend at least.

And whose fault is it the fans aren't loyal? Does Nokia blame cell phone buyers, IBM computer buyers...do K-Mart, Sears, JC Penney and Montgomery-Ward blame its customers or themselves? Did Apple blame its customers after Jobs was pushed out for a Pepsi exec and nobody wanted to buy their newest inventions? I don't believe any CEO of a major corporation in the world would blame consumers for not consuming an inferior or fatally flawed product. Did McDonalds blame Starbucks, Subway, Chipotle, In and Out, Panera, Five Guys?

MLBTradeRumors Offseason Outlook
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 14, 2015 -> 06:07 AM) Royals = 3 decades of not winning Astros = hadn't made the playoffs in longer than the White Sox including 3 straight years of 100+ losses and literally 0 rated broadcasts, and rated one of the absolute worst franchises in sports (117 of 132 in the rankings last year, that we are 85th in this year) Cubs = Fans still showing up, allowing them to not only completely rebuild, but also to still sign top free agents But it won't be shocking at all if the Astros pass the White Sox after 2016. The White Sox will have fallen to the fourth quartile from the back end of the second in the span of just two seasons. The Royals have the best overall record in the AL the past three years and did at least lead the division until August, 2003. That particular team finished over .500 by a bit. Let's also not forget the White Sox sent 24 years from 1959 to 83. And 40 from 1919.

While Harrelson would be amped, Carlos Gomez would either get injured or do a pre-steroids Sammy Sosa impersonation with the White Sox. Parra or Pearce will be cheaper...that's how we roll. Second and third tier players other than Robertson and Abreu.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 14, 2015 -> 05:45 AM) Lincoln - Douglas wasn't really a debate the way we think of it. It was just a series of long, prepared speeches of alternating view points. There weren't questions or back and forth interactions. I was just responding to the any moment in any election in history. Like Greg's ticket was the biggest travesty in the history of motorized vehicles...
