Managing a Rebuilding Team Wouldn't Scare Ventura
caulfield12 replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 09:08 AM) This exact strategy is about to get Jack Z fired this offseason. No one is buying tickets now because the team sucks. Jason Bay isn't going to bring them back. The Sox need to get good as soon as possible to bring ticket sales back. Giving at bats to old, bad players instead of developing young, high-upside players will only slow this process down. No one will come see a 65 win team just like no one will come see a 70 win team just like no one will come see a 75 win team. Then sign Granderson, Morales, Utley and McCann. BOOM, steak dinner! C McCann 1B Morales 2B Utley SS Beckham 3B Gillaspie LF Viciedo CF Granderson RF Rios (if he's not traded) DH Dunn Instantly competitive team, lol. Even then, you have to worry about Viciedo, Beckham's defense at SS and Conor repeating his 2012 performance (essentially being a 675-725 OPS type of player). -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 07:31 AM) Olivo, Shoppach, and Francouer are going to make you worse, not better. If you pick up veterans, you pick up guys like McCann, Morales, Granderson, whoever. Guys that don't f***ing suck Yeah, that's fine...I'm not the one writing checks. If that was the case, we'd sign McCann, Utley, Morales and Granderson and be instantly competitive again next year. I was trying to anticipate what was more likely to happen...not what I would do, because, once again, that's not usually how the White Sox operate, with the exception of the Dunn free agency signing. And, that was a single player, not 3-4 in total.

QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 08:32 AM) I also think the Sox need to address the free agent market for at least one outfielder. The OF prospects down in the farm are progressing much slower than anticipated. I would hate for them to rush Thompson up as well. I would give him and the other guys (Hawkins, Walker, Mitchell) more time to prove themselves. Hopefully if Hahn plays his cards right this summer, he can acquire an OF prospect who is much closer to sniffing the MLB level than our prospects. Assuming Viciedo does go over to 1b next year, I think our outfield will be pieced together like this: Left Field- Jordan Danks will start the year here, however, Thompson will work his way up to eventually take over this spot. Center Field- The White Sox will use some of their freed up cash on a free agent. I can definitely see them bringing in Chicago native Granderson. He seems like a real classy player and can help the young kids develop. Other names include Ellsbury, Crisp and Davis. Right Field- OF prospect via this year's trade deadline. Things will likely look a whole bunch different in 2014 and that is okay with me. At this point, Trayce Thompson's a much better defender than Granderson. He should be in center. -

Well, assuming Rios and possibly DeAza are gone, Danks, Tekotte and Wells should get plenty of time the remainder of this year to prove whether they deserve to be on the 2014 O.D. roster. And it also wouldn't be a surprise to see Viciedo get playing time at 1B in August/September, if Konerko is moved, which opens up another spot. 10% odds for Danks are quite optimistic, because unless he's facing the White Sox pitching/catching tandem, it's not going to be easy for him to accumulate many steals. -
Only 1 for his last 7 and "slumping," haha. Has tumbled from .449 to .430. Erratic, inconsistent play is reminiscent of Greg775 in high school.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 07:26 AM) He's exactly the kind of player who could wind up a starting OF in 2014 if the dream of selling off completely comes true. Then good luck selling any season ticket to non-corporate clients.... We still have numerous other options in the trade market/s as well as off-season free agents. Look at it this way...following the M's model, are you better off giving Jordan Danks 250-300 at-bats in 2014 to prove he can't play everyday (the only position he'd fit with his skill set and limited power is CF, and he would be replaced by Thompson eventually)....or putting the likes of a Morse, Ibanez or Bay out there and then trying to flip them at the trade deadline for some prospects? -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 06:54 AM) None of these are good options. When the Sox start dealing players, you use players from within the system. No need to pick up retreads who will not do anything towards the future And yet we have to field a competitive team next year, to an extent, with some experienced veterans (hopefully who have experience playing in "winning" organizations) sprinkled in here and there. Having a veteran back-up for Flowers or Phegley (assuming they don't go after McCann) is advisable.

QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 06:46 AM) Sounds like they send Danks down to get regular ABs so he can play more when a few of these guys walk the plank in the next few weeks. And yet the odds of Jordan Danks being a starting OFer for Opening Day 2014 are minimal, at best. -
http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...0,5316983.story Also, another article about the future of the outfield from bleacherreport....didn't see this anywhere, but Padilla stated that Hahn told him Viciedo is more than likely ticketed for 1B next season. Chicago White Sox general manager Rick Hahn is going to be a busy man as the July 31, non-waiver trade deadline approaches. After all—with the exception of starting pitching—Hahn needs to address each position group as he shops some of the White Sox’s most valuable assets to contending teams. Where does he focus his energies, though? The answer is in the outfield, which will soon be in a state of disarray. First off, Alex Rios is the subject of intense trade speculation. The Texas Rangers, San Francisco Giants and Arizona Diamondback have been mentioned directly by ESPN.com’s Bruce Levine, but the list does not stop there. According to ESPN’s Trade Central, the Pittsburgh Pirates, Washington Nationals and New York Yankees have distinct needs in right field. Rios can also play center field, which only increases the number of potential suitors. All told, it would be quite surprising if he is still on the White Sox’s 25-man roster after the non-waiver trade deadline. In left field, Dayan Viciedo’s time is short lived. During spring training, Hahn said that he sees Viciedo as a potential option at first base, perhaps as soon as 2014, according to ESPN’s Doug Padilla. Given the uncertain future of Paul Konerko, moving Viciedo to first would make a lot of sense. Granted, he has been rather inconsistent at the plate, but he still possesses quite a bit of upside and may be best served switching positions. Alejandro De Aza has been inconsistent. Finally, Alejandro De Aza is not the answer in center field for a couple of reasons. As a leadoff hitter, for example, he lacks the ability to get on base often enough and strikes out far too often. He also tends to rely on his power to generate offense instead of using his speed to manufacture runs. While he did a nice job going from first to third on a single Tuesday night, his stat line—.261/.319/415, 10 home runs and 82 K’s—attests to those sentiments. In addition to his offensive limitations, De Aza has had a rough time in the outfield this year. More often than the White Sox would like, he misplays singles through the infield, takes bad angles on fly balls and misses the cutoff man. De Aza is making just over $2 million dollars this season, and that figure will likely go up since he will be eligible for arbitration for a second time this offseason As it stands, the potential for each of the Opening Day outfielders to either not be with the White Sox or play a different position next year is very real. Now, if the White Sox had more than one potential replacement in the minor leagues, they could look to add infield depth or bolster a soon to be depleted bullpen, but that is not the case. While Trayce Thompson—.314/.365/.520, four home runs, 25 RBI and four stolen bases last month—is finally producing at a very high level and could be ready for the 2014 season, the much heralded Courtney Hawkins, Keenyn Walker and Jared Mitchell have all struggled this season. It is going to take quite a bit for Hahn to turn this current collection into a viable contender. He should start with the outfield.

Olivo's name jumps out...as a back-up for Phegley and veteran tutor. Kelly Shoppach was just DFA'ed recently as well, although I think he accepted the assignment. Francouer would simply be a stopgap or placeholder in case we trade Rios...
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 4, 2013 -> 10:47 PM) How good a prospect is Phegley? Is he Sal Perez good? Is he good? Not a good comparison. Although he's probably going to hit for more power than Perez has displayed this season.

Thompson and Herbek to Charlotte...
-
Ugly run for MS. An error, bunt, passed ball and sacrifice fly gives the Braves the lead, 1-0.
-
Wagner with a really nifty play at 3B, strong arm too, but very small for that position. 8500 sell-out at the Barons' game, 5th of the season. Snodgress gave up a triple off the wall in RF that Walker almost caught with a leaping attempt....came back with a change-up to get out of the inning. Snodgress stuff-wise is a little like Quintana. Doesn't have a dominant fastball (89-92), but his curveball has been his best pitch. Decent change-up. Might be a candidate for the long-man in the bullpen next year, but probably will be starting in Charlotte. NO MORE LEE GREENWOOD PLEASE!!! Interesting. Supposedly, the White Sox believe more balls will fall in front of outfielders (at least at the minor league level) and order their AA outfielders to play shallower, don't use a "no doubles" defense. Maybe this also helps them better assess their ability to go back on balls, as well. Going to the 9th. Still 0-0. Taylor Thompson looks to be entering the game for BIRM. Was added to the SL All-Star team today.

QUOTE (daggins @ Jul 4, 2013 -> 06:30 PM) Gonna guess Trayce got a day off for throwing his bat violently to the ground. Second guess - corresponding move is Tekotte up after tonights AAA game. Thompson's not ready yet. Guess Trayce is just frustrated with his current 1/21 slide, and maybe not making the SL All-Star team. He was getting under everything last night, popping up pitches into the air. But Trayce is going to Charlotte, along with Herbek.

Broken up. Saladino had a ball deep in the hole in short LCF and he rounded it off and couldn't quite make an accurate throw....the ball beat the runner, but he pulled Dan Black off the bag and he just barely missed him with the tag as he went around him on the foul side of the line. Tyler's arm looks a bit short for major league SS, but he could play there 2-3 times a month. Nice move by the lefty Snodgress, promptly picks the runner off, they actually handled the rundown well...Saladino chased him all the way across the field from 2B to the 1B bag, no unnecesary throws. Through the top of the 6th, still 0-0. Black and Saladino retired easily, Mitchell walks on a 3-2 count. 7/10 in steals. Barons leading the SL in thefts. Short flares one into CF that drops, Mitchell going about 85-90% speed makes it to 3B and Short pulls into 2B behind him. Blanke check-swing come-backer to the pitcher. To the 7th. Jon Gilmore retired from baseball and has gone into training for the Navy SEALS. Another single, Snodgress has also surrendered a walk....so 3 total baserunners through 7....inning ends on a very nice throw from Blanke to Semien to barely nab the basestealer at 2B. Nice arm. Haven't seen any throws like that from Flowers or Gimenez this year.

QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Jul 4, 2013 -> 06:12 PM) The story by Dan Hayes at CSN says 3 more moves are coming. Said that Jordan Danks was returned to Charlotte and Gimenez DFA. Wonder if Trayce Thompson is also coming up? Regime change!!! Here is the link: http://www.csnchicago.com/white-sox-talk/w...rospect-phegley Last month, one member of the front office said Phegley is the best player in the International League this season. Good work, Dan Hayes, lol.

Snodgress has a no-hitter through 5 against Mississippi. That gun has to be about 3-4 MPH off because they have him at 86 MPH consistently with the FB. Barons playing in what look like Desert Storm khaki uniforms. Dan Wagner continuing to hit well, carrying over from last night. 2 hits tonight, 3 last night. Wagner is undersized but runs well for a 3B. Semien singles with a looping liner into CF, Wagner gambles (should have been out on a good throw) and gets to 3rd. Walker wildly strikes out with runners and 1st and 3rd, 1 out. Earley still playing for Thompson. Good contact, about 385 feet to CF, but that ballpark feels big.

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 4, 2013 -> 03:17 PM) Adam Dunn is the only reason this team is watchable And Sale. And Beckham, recently.

QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 4, 2013 -> 10:06 AM) That NL West is a joke. MLB is going to look pretty bad if the winner of that division is 80-82, while two of the NL Central teams are playing one game to get in the playoffs. Anyway, I'm glad the Dodgers suck. They DID suck. They don't anymore. Two weeks ago, they were 12 games under .500. They have Hanley Ramirez and Matt Kemp back. That makes a big difference, obviously. They're still missing Carl Crawford. Plus, Greinke and Billingley were out....Billingsley for the year.

QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 4, 2013 -> 09:51 AM) 81-Game Records from the Bottom: 1. Hou 30-51 2. Mia 30-51 3. Mil 32-49 4. Sox 33-48 5. Cubs 35-46 6. NYM 35-46 7. Sea 35-46 8. Min 36-45 9. LAD 38-43 10. LAA 38-43 You can make a case that the Astros and Marlins have overachieved. And the Angels and Dodgers? Well, money doesn't buy championships. The Dodgers are only 2.5 GB. The Angels, on the other hand, have a long ways to catch the A's, Rangers and all the AL East.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 3, 2013 -> 08:10 PM) caulfield, any idea why Trayce left tonight's game? here's a response i got from beat writer I'm not sure. He started 0-3 on the night. I sent the Barons an email last night to check but I haven't heard back. I'll let you know what I hear. Sent from my Verizon Wireless 4G LTE DROID

Will the Sox Eat Salary to Bring More Talent

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 4, 2013 -> 09:21 AM) Obviously it's all relative to the package you're getting...but I'm not moving him just to save $6-8 million. He may be worth well more as a trade piece next year in the last year of his deal. 1) If he has a great second half, it will help maintain some of the season ticket base, as opposed to completely starting over (once again, assuming they're not spending on 3-4 premier free agents to inject life into the marketing for 2014). 2) Like the idea of Thome and Dunn being around each other, just like Paulie/Thome/Dye, etc. 3) He very easily could fetch better prospects at the trade deadline in 2014. 4) There's nobody in the majors or minors who could come close to replicating his homers and RBI's that wouldn't cost us Chris Sale or a another potential "albatross" contract...unless Hahn has another Quentin or Carter stowed away somewhere. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 4, 2013 -> 09:16 AM) I'd still be happy to save 1/2 of his contract for next year. Unless they pay 3/4th's of it, I would hesitate to pull the trigger. What was the split on the Thome deal again? The difference is we don't HAVE to trade him, the Phillies did, with Howard coming behind him...or Middlebrooks last year.
