  1. Two problems.... While trading Gavin definitely carves his $9.5 million from the payroll (option) next year, it's going to be impossible to get anything back in return that's near the value he can bring when he's on one of his good streaks. There's little choice but to ride this out a little longer... Of course, pretty soon, the Tigers will be knocking on the door and the stretch of games (the last home series where we went 2-4) will be gone. That said, we've got a disproportionate number of games left with the Twins and Royals in the 2nd half. We make a move now out of desperation, it's Holmberg/Hudson for Edwin Jackson all over again. Impossible position for a GM to be in....your heart tells you to go for it while your gut tells you the Tigers are still the team to beat if they can get their starting rotation healthy.
  2. QUOTE (flavum @ Jun 15, 2012 -> 04:55 AM) Ok, well the Cubs got one game. Good enough. Rockies are on the verge of going 0-9 in interleague play. Facing the Tigers this weekend. They're due, right? That, and no Verlander. Smyly and Fister are ailing, so you'd think they would be able to do something against Scherzer, Porcello and the lefty rookie that's been inserted into the rotation recently.
  3. C'mon Sveum. You can't have Valbuena swinging away when they finally got their first runner to 1B in 6 innings. DP ball. Especially when Reed Johnson was hitting .500 at a pinch hitter this season and over .300 overall. 103 pitches, 73 strikes for Verlander. At least the Cubs will have a chance against Valverde.
  4. QUOTE (scenario @ Jun 15, 2012 -> 04:16 AM) Regarding Doyle... I have no problems with the Sox releasing him. Probably on the fringe of whether he would make/stick on a major league roster. If so, how long do you hang around in AAA? Doyle is a very bright guy. Likely saw the handwriting on the wall. Plus he'll make alot more money in Japan than he would in the minors. So... probably the best thing for him. Best of luck Terry! Did they release him from his contract or did they sell his contract to the Japanese team?
  5. Austin Jackson 2 out single after a Verlander bunt put the Tiggers ahead 3-2. LOL at the 7th inning guest Jeff "I'm Not Jon" Garland "Yeah, you Tigers fans suck!!!" 124,782 fans the largest series (3 game) total crowd in the history of Wrigley Field. Must be 33% Tiggers fans. (That translates to 17% of our entire season attendance in just one series). Verlander's gone almost 6 innings in a row without giving up a thing.
  6. QUOTE (ptatc @ Jun 15, 2012 -> 12:37 AM) This is not true. There are many fewer travelers, especially for business. There are many web based meetings instead. This kills the airline industry. There are fewer seats because the number of flights has decreased. The price is increasing in part due to the struggles of the airline industry and fuel costs. Maybe I should preface my comment by saying in Asia, Australia and the Middle East. Haven't lived in the US since 2007. I'd have to check the overall worldwide numbers (with Europe teetering on the brink of collase, I can't imagine air travel has blipped any direction but down, except perhaps Germany)...just know they're in the process of building 50-100 new airports here in China over the next decade. For international/trans-ocean flights, the prices have markedly increased in the last 2-3 years.
  7. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 14, 2012 -> 10:07 PM) Maybe the votes against Ozzie were misunderstood. Heath Bell means no disrespect. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...0,3301758.story Will Middleton or Middlebrooks? Not a great job by the editors picking up that one.
  8. Boesch and Young are horrible on the corners. It wouldn't make much of a difference with Quentin there, might actually be an improvement, all things considered. They've actually even toyed with the idea of playing Berry in LF or RF with Austin Jackson back now.
  9. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Jun 14, 2012 -> 10:50 PM) Whoever was the genius wishing the Tigers to trade for Quentin... well, they are interested. Jon Morosi ‏@jonmorosi Sources: #Tigers have interest in trading for Carlos Quentin. He has a scorching 1.463 OPS in 12 games with #Padres since returning from DL I said the Indians or the Tigers... Both need either a LFer or RFer, although replacing Brennan Boesch in RF would be the most likely move. He would replace Johnny Damon in LF for the Indians...a lot depends on their confidence in Hafner and Sizemore coming back.
  10. Dickey said it himself. David Wright makes that play 8 times out of 10, maybe less with a runner like Upton, realistically. I think to say it should be a "reasonable expectation" that the average MLB 3B consistently makes that play 90-95% of the time or more, no way.
  11. QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Jun 14, 2012 -> 09:03 PM) For $58 million, I'd put up with Ozzie...with a big smile on my face. Oh, and the weather wouldn't hurt, either. The Marlins already cost him his consecutive string of interleague victories at 11. Wonder if he wishes he was back in 1st place and home in Chicago?
  12. QUOTE (ewokpelts @ Jun 14, 2012 -> 08:08 PM) dont give brooks any ideas. and to punch a hole in your airline theory, sites like priceline and travelocity kill the airline's profits, as all but southwest allowed these middle men to sell their tickets for them. But now, when you go to priceline, travelocity, orbitz, expedia, etc., all the fares quoted are exactly the same as the others. There are very few "deals" anymore like it was possible to find. Price fixing and collusion rule the day....that's their choice, obviously. Even if you go directly to the airline's website itself, the prices are almost always the same as the other "search engine" sites list or charge. There's a lot more competition for the teams now with StubHub involved to undercut their own ticket markets significantly.
  13. QUOTE (Springfield SoxFan @ Jun 14, 2012 -> 08:48 PM) KW has explored him in the past, not to the same level os O-Hudson, Erstad, others, but I'm sure he was kicking the tires. I hope he never has occasion to explore me...
  14. QUOTE (oldsox @ Jun 14, 2012 -> 08:53 PM) Who moves up from Birm? I would pick Castro, but not sure they're ready yet to move him. They might fill the AAA rotation spot with a journeyman/waiver claim/filler/spot starter until they're ready to move Castro. Hernandez might also get a shot when he comes off the DL, one of those two guys.
  15. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jun 14, 2012 -> 03:01 PM) Proof that he is a bad manager to play for. Paul Konerko. I rest my case, your honor. This clearly was a well thought out argument. Proof. Jose Reyes and Heath Bell, lol. Proof="show me the money!!!"
  16. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jun 14, 2012 -> 01:32 PM) At least a 600%-700% raise according to his father. That's why you go. The game is pretty much the same, except there's a rule prohibiting tie games from going more than 3 extra innings, which means the game ends in a tie. First, there are the pre-game workouts and warm-ups, lasting hours. Then there's all the cigarette smoke - Japanese players light up a lot. Also, there's the fact that when the club is on the road everyone has to dress for the game at the hotel because there are no visiting locker rooms. The media never tired of asking the third baseman if he'd like to marry a Japanese woman. When (Lou) Merloni answered questions, he often felt his translator was editing his comments along with reporters' queries. Along with the possibility of being an everyday player, there's the bump in salary a player who's been in the states realizes. Usually they're making six to 10 times what they made in the US! That's quite a payday. After Japan, Merloni came back to the Red Sox and played for them and the AAA team for the next three seasons before going to various other major league clubs. He seemed like he might have found a starting role with San Diego part way through the 2003 season, but after 65 games, they dealt him back to the BoSox. Gabe Kapler was offered a similar opportunity in 2005, and like Merloni, he took it. With a contract valued at approximately $2 million, the utility outfielder was excited about getting to play every day and experience an entirely different culture. But after being a part of Boston's first World Series winning team in 86 years, Japanese ball seemed to lack the spark of the game played in his homeland. 17. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 14, 2012 -> 12:15 PM) My god. I can't believe this thread. Paulie is above criticism right now. He hit in to a DP. Shoot him. The game was over when the ss saved that run. Unfortunately that was it cause Paulie didn't elevate a fly ball. How was the game over when Furcal prevented the ball from getting to the OF? There was a runner on 3B with one out. You should score that run at least 50-60% of the time...maybe the percentage against a closer in the 9th is 40-50%, but the game wasn't over.
  18. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 14, 2012 -> 12:27 PM) Was this poll taken after Oz's comments about Castro? Then it's poorly timed. The Marlins Foundation donated more than $150,000 to three local charities over the weekend, and the ballclub says another round of significant gifts is in store once the team decides how to best use the salary manager Ozzie Guillen lost during his five-game suspension. Before Friday’s game against the Astros, the Marlins presented a check for $50,000 to Shake-A-Leg Miami, a watersports facility for children with physical, developmental and economic challenges. A day later, they gave $100,000 to the Miracle League of Miami-Dade for the construction of a park. The Marlins Foundation also donated $4,200 to the Jackie Robinson Foundation on Sunday, 65 years to the day after Robinson broke baseball’s color barrier. These donations were in the works before Guillen’s now-infamous remarks praising Fidel Castro. Guillen later apologized for the comments, and was suspended for five games by the organization. Marlins president David Samson said last week the team will donate Guillen’s salary for those games to a yet-to-be named human rights charity. http://www.miamiherald.com/2012/04/17/2752...tes-150000.html
  19. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 14, 2012 -> 12:27 PM) Was this poll taken after Oz's comments about Castro? Then it's poorly timed. So normally, Ozzie wouldn't have been last? I think he has been for pretty much 3 or 4 years running now. On the other hand, there's been at least one or two polls that ALSO had him as one of the most popular managers to play for, but he's always had many detractors as well among MLB players.
  20. Worth about the same look that Rich Harden and Manny Ramirez are...or Brad Penny.
  21. We might want to hold on to that Jones kid.
  22. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Jun 14, 2012 -> 10:19 AM) Then go on the DL playing like that helps no one. That's on Ventura. With that theory, Mr. Gibson would never have won the World Series game for the Dodgers limping up to the plate with just one leg, right?
  23. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Jun 14, 2012 -> 10:17 AM) What the hell run Dunn that was horrid. Hence, not playing because of the bad ankle. That's the downside, he doesn't K or pop the ball up, but hits it on the ground.
  24. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 14, 2012 -> 10:07 AM) Why in the hell would anyone do that when they're going to be a free agent after the season is over? I mean the whole process of going through a revolutionary surgery that's never been done before...all the rehab that goes with it, how much money would Jake have made guaranteed in his career if he just stayed DL'ed through 2012? I'm sure it would have been enough to survive on. Gil Meche actually quit and left $11 million or so on the table from the Royals, but it's VERY rare.
