The writer of that OP article is more than a BIT bitter. Jesus...not the most optimistic dude in the world. Makes Fathom and I seem like Richard Simmons or Tony Robbins. Well, maybe I shouldn't go THAT far.

I know championship teams. They're no championship team. Dan Quayle

QUOTE (Cknolls @ Aug 10, 2011 -> 07:23 PM) Keep Pfizer for nothing but the dividend. Also think anout Vodaphone. Not a stock, but you can buy the ADR and reap the same benefits. They will start to realize the huge benefits of owning a huge stake in Verizon Wireless very shortly. I believe the yield on it is in the neighboorhood of 5.6% or so. Verizon said they will pay them a 3.5 billion dollar dividend that they owe them but it may not occur until 2012. But the stock is very cheap, IMO, $22 and change, and seeing as they own 45% of verizon wireless it is a screaming bargain. Thanks for that tip, cknolls! My mom's 82, so that's a good rate of return in the dividend. Over the last 10-12 years, I've tried to get away from the tech stocks and replace them with dividend-bearing stocks. One of my best picks was OGE Energy. That one has gone up 2.5X since I bought it and the dividend is pretty decent as well. It's at $25 now and 5.75% yield....but buying it long-term, not so concerned about $2-3 price shifts.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 11, 2011 -> 06:52 AM) In general, broadbased index funds such as the SP 500 out perform pretty much all equity position and funds in the long term. If you don't have a lot of money, that is the best thing you can do, until you can really afford true diversification\. I think it's about an 85% rate of the market beating managers....something like that. Or 15% odds you can pick a fund that will beat the index. Perfect example, 10 years ago Bill Miller from Legg Mason funds had beaten the market 13 or 14 consecutive years with his Value Index over there. Ever since I acquired it, it has been the worst-performing (by far) of all my mutual funds. The law of averages and things "returning to mean" will always get you. Statistical anomalies always have a way of correcting themselves. That's why Vanguard or Index Funds or the ones that mature based on your retirement age are usually better for small investors than trying to actively beat the market. It's like the movie PI, everyone imagines they can do it or develop the computer model (Long Term Capital Management) but no computer is smart enough to correct for human fear, motivativation, counter-intuitive selling and panic.
-
Plus, there's no "load" to buy a Vanguard fund and there's not that 1-2% loss from your ROI on capital gains every year from an active manager chasing higher performance at the end of every quarter by "churning" the portfolio. If you want to go conservative, you can add a value or growth & income element. Although there's still a lot of duplication of portfolios. Maybe you should also thinking of mixing in different sizes, small, mid-cap and also international. You need to have at least one good international fund. And never have more than 10% of your money invested in one specific stock. That's what I have always gone with.

Yep, and of course Kipnis is another Chicago kid. Cue Phil Rogers article. If it's not on Curtis Granderson, Kipnis will become new his cause celebre.

It's going to be another good wake-up call for the marketing department to realize what kind of marketing "hell" they're about to enter this offseason.

Okay guys, who do you want to trade or "dump" to clear enough salary to sign a leadoff hitter? Someone will have to go. Danks? Not sign Buehrle? Quentin? Floyd? Thornton?
-
Ozzie also didn't get Lillibridge or Ramirez into the game as PH'ers. At least both those guys can get an extra-base hit or a homer...Lilly should have hit for DeAza against a LHP. Ramirez could have hit for Vizquel.
-
We probably have to face Chen and/or Duffy, right? God help us if Ozzie doesn't play Lillibridge and expects Dunn to hit a lefty for the fourth time all season.

QUOTE (kwolf68 @ Aug 10, 2011 -> 08:13 PM) LMAO...the Sox will NOT keep winning every 5 out of every 6, no team does. The White Sox will NOT win this division "going away"...if they win it, it will be a very tight race and will require excellent overall baseball against good teams...beating up on the Twins and Orioles does not make for sporting lofty predictions. They're not going to win anything without Dunn and Beckham contributing. Rios and Morel have picked it up at least, that's somewhat encouraging. You would say it's almost too bad Rios wasn't asked to bunt (if he actually can execute it)...but that would have meant Dunn or Beckham still would have needed to come through with a hit. Dunn, now 17 times this season with at least 3 K's and no hits. A new major league record every time he manages that difficult feat.
-
Dunn and Beckham are just awful right now. Frasor's best days are behind him. His stuff isn't nearly as crisp as it was 5 years ago. Looks like he's been overused in TOR over the years. Typical White Sox. Well, maybe not coming back from 4-0 down, but blowing all the opportunities with RISP late. Even Konerko looked terrible his last 2 at-bats. Demoralizing loss. But hey, we saved Thornton/Sale/Santos for another day. Yay!
-
Sale or Thornton against DAVIS? No? For the record Ozzie, Reimhold is 2 for 2 career against Jesse Crain. Are you crazy?
-
No fastballs to Reynolds. And no hangers that are center-cut, either.
-
Great job, Jesse! UGH.....the last thing you want to do is give them the lead right back. At least it looks like Johnson will be entering the game again for the 8th. And don't let Jones swipe 3rd.
-
Let's see if we get the "good" or "bad" Crain. We'll find out pretty quickly with the middle of the order. It's a miracle that this game is tied with how many hits the Orioles put on the board. 11 and only 4 runs? They weren't missing many. Indians now leading 9-3 and threatening for more. MIL going for the knockout blow against the Cardinales.
-
Wow....starting to become a believer here. Can we actually pull this game out? Great job Juan, you sucked for 2 1/2 months but you've been a very clutch hitter ever since. But please don't sign him for 2012, KW. Whatever you do...don't do that. Humber somehow gutted out 6 IP. Please, please, please tell me the bullpen's coming into the game. Aha, looks like Crain time.
-
Atta boy Brent. Berken coming into to try to retire Juan Pierre. At-bat of the game....we need to at least get within 1 run here somehow. Berken with 6.10 ERA.
-
At least Rios is alive now. Should have brought up DeAza months ago to get this reaction out of Alex. 144 K's coming into this ab, ahead of Reynolds and Austin Action Jackson.
-
Not better D by Omar. Just younger legs. He's done as a SS. He can still contribute at 3B and 2B occasionally. Setting up for the game of the season in the AL Central tmrw with Verlander trying to hold the 2 game lead in the face of a 13 game losing streak in CLE.
-
OOOPS. Guess I'm saving a lot of money NOT watching the White Sox this season. That sucks. Thought they were in KC.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 10, 2011 -> 06:37 PM) 11 fly balls for the Sox tonight. Looks like we're going to have to beat up on Tillman tomorrow to salvage this series and have some momentum for Friday. A loss tomorrow, and you're probably looking at a half-empty Cell. Thought we had KC on the road, then CLE and TEX at home??? I hope that's right, I will be at the Friday and Saturday games in KC.
-
If Ramirez was playing shortstop...or Lillibridge, we probably limit the damage to 2 runs there in the early innings instead of 3. OLDmar just has zero range at this point in his career. Even if he stops the ball, he doesn't have the arm strength to make most of the throws...especially deep in the hole.
-
1) Humber has hit the wall...nothing to be done about that 2) Vizquel should never be playing SS at his age, only 3B or 2B....you have to use Lillibridge to rest Ramirez 3) Dunn has to benched for the rest of the season 4) Nobody on this team is taking the right approach at the plate except Konerko, AJ and Morel...and Pierre usually Beckham, Rios, Quentin, Ramirez, Dunn....all of them need a new hitting coach desperately You can't try to pull every outside pitch. Harrelson keeps saying "just missed it" but that's what will happen Carlos. Rios keeps pulling outside pitches and they're resulting in a ton of lazy fly balls to CF. I've given up expecting Beckham to go on anything resembling another hot streak the final 7 weeks. Last inning was a perfect example. Leadoff double, Dunn K, Beckham swinging out of his ass and popping up and the runner never leaving 2B. Can't afford to give away games that like this when you're 4 GB in the heart of August.
