  1. He's Venezuelan, right? Miguel is Mike in Spanish, but the last name is not common...sounds more Eastern European.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 9, 2012 -> 08:16 AM) I finally watched Bridesmaids last night...hilarious...the dress scene alone was enough to make the movie...I was a little underwhelmed by Melissa McCarthy's performance, however...I guess my expectations were raised a bit too high. Read they're going to do a sequel potentially without Kristen Wiig. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/brid...niversal-277792 Big mistake. Like doing the Bourne without Matt Damon. We'll see how well that one works out for them.
  3. How is having David DeJesus on your roster rebuilding? We picked up a player who'll be better and cost us virtually nothing in Alejandro DeAza.
  4. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 9, 2012 -> 06:40 AM) I really dont see how this connects to your previous point at all. Not even close to the same thing Which has/had higher Las Vegas odds? Rios, Dunn and Beckham all making the 2012 All-Star team and Peavy in the Top 5 in the AL Cy Young...or Tebow leading the Broncos to numerous come-from-behind victories and the 2nd round of the playoffs? Which one is more implausible? Both would seem very far-fetched, and yet it's been proven possible. Maybe because of the religious overtones that color Tebow, it's hard to have an "objective" discussion without passions being enflamed...but would the odds of Tebow accomplishing what he has already done be exponentially higher than the scenario just described? If you believe that the White Sox will contend and at least two of those things are possible (one of those 3 makes All-Star team or AL Comeback Player, Peavy in the Top 5 of AL Cy Young, throw in Reed for AL Rookie of the Year or Rookie Pitcher of the Year for good measure). Just trying to make an analogy, since very few posters believe we have the looks of a contender (as is), and that's before dealing Thornton and/or Crain and Floyd.
  5. And then we'll have a $40 million nightmare and clubhouse cancer on our hands, like Milton Bradley. No thanks. I think Rios will have a nice rebound with some positive reaffirmation/support from basically what will amount to a new coaching staff. That tends to have a huge effect on most rosters, at least in ST and the first half of the season. Sustaining it all the way through September, that's another question altogether. But look how far the Broncos have ridden Tebow against all odds, with all the critics in the world ready to pounce after any slip-ups. If the AXIS OF UNDERPERFORMING FOUR all play well, odds are at least 50/50 that should put us on the cusp of contention. Then we can start talking about unloading their contracts. But sitting on the bench collecting dust and cobwebs, forget about it.
  6. Johnny Damon has a lot of hits in his career and he was never close to a superstar!!! Back to our regularly scheduled fake Sox trade rumor of the week.
  7. Looked like Broncos were in striking distance before the recovered fumble. OT.

But having that first performance already out there, it's hard to make it original the 2nd time around. Think True Grit, for example, the Bridges/Damon version. Maybe I just think Rooney Mara's 10X hotter than Rapace and my bias for her is kicking in, plus her NFL connections, lol. She's the new Minka Kelly, haha. We've had the same debate over LET ME IN/LET THE RIGHT ONE IN. Clearly, the first one there was a better film. All things considered, Craig and the chemistry he had with the rest of the cast was MUCH better than Mr. Mission Impossible 4 villain dude. And the "villainous" Skarsgaard and the last 20-30 minutes featured in much more heavily this time around. I don't like the ending crash scene (took the moral conumdrum away from Lisbeth) and the "jilted" girl ending...those are 2 quibbles to this one.
  9. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 8, 2012 -> 06:17 PM) You didn't answer my question. I asked about Dunn and Soriano being able to play a decent LF. I'd call the chances of that happening basically 0%. Rios at least has some chance of htiting next year. Soriano will NOT play a decent LF. Adam Dunn will also...NOT play an adequate LF. Rios for Soriano, Dunn is the full-time DH still and Soriano platoons with Dunn and plays 2B full-time once Beckham goes into the tank for good, lol. DeAza, Lillibridge and Viciedo/Cespedes is ur outfield. It will never happen, but hey, we tried Josh Fields in LF, too. We can use part of the cash we receive back with Soriano on Cespedes....$10 million or so.
  10. And people like me who were forced to sleep in $30 hotel rooms the last 2 nights in China instead of a 5 star hotel, lol. Long story. God, changing from a nice hard bed to a much softer one tore up my back in Crede/Jenks-ish ways in 72 hours.
  11. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 8, 2012 -> 05:56 PM) I was one of Big Ben's biggest fans prior to his off the field problems. I will never ever cheer for anything he does. I actually wonder what I'd do if the Bears had him on there team. I'd literally have to root for him to get injured so that I could go back to cheering for my favorite team. Damn, rough penalty for Denver. That was a great pick. Obviously it was an offsides though. Wil Cordero and Joey Belle would be up there close. Or Kobe on the Bulls, although that guy is loved as 2nd to God and Mao Zedong here in China. Maybe even more than Yao Ming. Guess Jesus was too busy listening to prayers over Christmas and New Year's but now has the time to focus on more secular matters like the NFL Playoffs.
  12. QUOTE (JorgeFabregas @ Jan 8, 2012 -> 02:33 PM) Everyone here said that the low ERA was bound to go up because his peripherals were horrible. And they were right! It's because Ozzie overused him in too many high leverage situations. If he was put into DJ Carasco scenarios, he would have looked much better at the end of the season.
  13. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Jan 8, 2012 -> 02:06 PM) I would bet every other team in the league did too. Jordan... I know. They still did a fantastic job building around him. They were creative. Pippen wasn't some can't miss guy. Kukoc was a great pick up out of Europe. They took a chance on Rodman. They basically built 2 separate teams anchored by a superstar. It's not like having the best player in the league is a lock either. How many championships did Wilt win? How about Moses Malone? The Bulls also did a great job marketing their brand. They're popular all over the country. How many other teams can boast fans in every city chanting "MVP?" Dr. J would be a better example, or Charles Barkley. Malone and Stockton. George Gervin. Alex English, etc. David Robinson, without Tim Duncan/Parker. I would say Malone was a very very good All-Star caliber center, but not one of the true superstars of the game. I guess it can be argued both ways.
  14. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 8, 2012 -> 05:00 PM) What's more likely...Soriano + Dunn playing a decent LF or Rios having a good year with the bats next year? Honestly feel better about Dunn than Rios. But Dunn just having cratered for one year and returning simply seems more likely. Then again, Rios' 2009-11 is pretty unprecedented as well. Probably the guys in the F.O. and clubhouse have a much better idea than we do. As far as Rios hitting well again, ???. Let's hope that Ventura and a new hitting instructor get through to him, because he simulataneously went from one of the best fielders in the game to one of the worst for his position, as well. Every aspect of his game became the dictionary definition of tepid, disenchanted, disinterested, lackadaisical.
  15. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jan 8, 2012 -> 03:15 PM) The reasons I don't see this happening is: Soriano is a right handed batter and on the Sox that addition makes for a poor balance of lefty and righty hitters. He hit better than Dunn, but you hope Dunn recovers in 2012 Adding Soriano only makes the OF situation more crowded plus I don't see Soriano as a very good defender Alfonso is owed around $54M still and Dunn is close to that, but maybe a year less in money? There wouldn't be any salary dump I am sure regardless of what you might think of a trade. $44 million left on Dunn...about $40 for Rios. Rios for Soriano would be a lot better move....financially, and Rios is much more of a negative force or cancer than Dunn apparently. The main problem there is we're not sure if DeAza 1) is an everyday player and 2) how well he can play CF for 150+ games. Of course, we have Lillibridge to back him up, but most would prefer to deal Soriano for Rios and stick DeAza in CF with Soriano/Dunn in LF. Plus we really need that LH power bat to balance the line-up, somehow. It can't be AJ or Kendry Morales to do it.
  16. 65-75%...but not 80-90% Someone would do that...a bit similar to the Jim Thome situation.
  17. Would be interesting to see how close the Cubs or White Sox would be to making a bid in the vicinity of $50 million for Cespedes. Both teams desperately need a future superstar, especially the Sox...but neither can afford a "hit and miss" of that magnitude in the rebuilding process.
  18. 33% with 2 WC's versus roughly 50% chance at the playoffs...comparing the two leagues
  19. Didn't we say the same thing in late july/early August? Then DET obliterated the rest of the division and whipped Santos twice, leading to Marty's call to deal him.

The newer version of GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO is 5X better, wow....Rooney Mara totally scared me, I can see why some families/adults even are steering away from this one, very dark, much moreso than original Swedish version.
  21. Epstein has the huge financial advantage to eat contracts like Zambrano's and bring in more big name FA's...plus the possibility of revenues generated from a new/retrofitted stadium, but, all things considered, the balance of moves should end up in KW's favor... I truly believe with Ozzie gone, with Hahn still there, Paddy and Ventura, the FO will start to function much more smoothly and efficiently, working together as a team instead of at loggerheads.
  22. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jan 7, 2012 -> 09:06 PM) I would probably say the Sox, but the Cubs havent really traded anything of signicant value. Marshall was their best piece, and I would value Santos and Quentin above him. However despite that, they still brought back the person of most value (Rizzo). So I don't know, that's a tough call. Back to Moneyball. DH/1B/corner OFer's are much more easily replaced than C, SS/2B, CF. If you want to value Rizzo (still) as one of the best prospects in baseball, then the combination of Castro and Molina trumps that. We got rid of the Teahen mistake, and got a potentially very useful piece back in Zach Stewart. You never know, but there's a distinct possibility that Stewart (back in a relief role), Hernandez and Addison Reed might more than end up compensating for the losses of Santos and Frasor. We (along with the rest of baseball since june/july '11) knew that Carlos Quentin had to go, too. You can complain all u want about losing Jackson and Buehrle, but there's also now the possibility of getting a pretty good haul back for Floyd and buying a "place holder" in the 5th spot to get us through 2012 while Molina, Castro, Axelrod, Petricka and Santiago all pitch their way onto the Top 5 prospect lists for the Sox. Sale at his upside trumps anything Buehrle could have done at 1/15th the cost. Viciedo is much cheaper than Quentin. We took someone we spent $25-50,000 on in Sergio Santos and leveraged him into a #2/3 starter for six years under cost control. If that move works out, and Castro/Stewart make it as the 4th/5th starter/s, then we've made up a lot of the ground we lost with Hudson and Gonzalez. There's no guarantees Gio could have succeeded at USCF. Plus we acquired Humber for absolutely nothing and we might have a #3/4 guy for the next 4 seasons. KW >>> Epstein/Hoyer If KW traded Beckham now or made a Zambrano move with Rios/Dunn and gave up 85% of their contracts, everyone would be screaming bloody murder...waiting until Dunn (especially) and Rios made the All-Star team in 2012 to say what a stupid move it was to sell both those guys for pennies on the dollar.
  23. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 7, 2012 -> 04:38 PM) Feels like Brian Roberts has been headed to the Cubs for years now. He always used to kill the Sox. Surprised KW didn't acquire him. Now that he's available and 3 years too late, probably will.
  24. QUOTE (The Critic @ Jan 7, 2012 -> 03:35 PM) Sounds like they may as well keep Soriano and hope for the best. At least he'll hit his 20 or so homers and drive in around 75 runs. Sounds like Joe Crede or Juan Uribe numbers. It (bringing in Soriano) was also kind of the Sox theory with Josh Fields. Stick him in LF and we'll live with his defensive deficiencies, as long as he hits. But we already have Dunn/Viciedo and we don't need another RH hitter, so no go. Above all else, Soriano is one of the most selfish hitters around. You don't want him serving as any type of example to the younger players. It's bad enough we have Rios on our team, we don't need another player like that. Quentin himself really wasn't much of a "team hitter" for the last 3 years, got way way too pull happy and flying open on every pitch.
  25. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jan 7, 2012 -> 10:41 AM) You've never been here before? If a 5.87 ERA doesn't warrant another invitation, I don't know what does. KW was trying to hype Jon Adkins with a AAA/AA ERA of almost 1.5X that when he was acquired. I'm sure there's some way to spin it...his ERA before the last 3-5 outing was 3.21 or something like that, whatever the numbers are.
