I'm not going to even hope that he will be as good as Longoria has been so far. I would certainly be willing to accept 15-18 homers, 75 RBI's and a .275-.280 batting average in his first season in the big leagues. You have to go back to Carlos Lee, Ordonez and Ray Durham for that type of production in Sox rookies, not including Alexei Ramirez as the typical rookie but certainly he was outstanding, too. (Durham was 7, 51 and .257 with 18 sb's). It took Aaron Rowand three "half" seasons to get started before he put up 24 homers, 69 RBI's, 38 doubles and .310 BA in one of his best seasons ever. Same thing with Joe Crede.

Sheets isn't going to go for an incentives-based deal, he will want guarantees and he will get them from some crazy GM/owner combination. Second, Bill Hall is a disaster defensively...good idea, but it's generally better to try to find an undervauled player who's young and has upside rather than a player on the wrong side of 30. However, I don't think he would cost as much as some think, and he would be perfect for the Uribe "supersub" role, having the versatility to play most infield and outfield positions (albeit not very well!!) I don't think the Royals are going to have any incentive to trade us a potential starter in Teahen/Joe Randa Lite. Yes, Gordon's ensconced over there (although he could move to 1B if Shealy flops again) for now...and Teahen doesn't have the power for a corner outfield spot. Neither does DeJesus, to be honest. I think the odds of him being dealt to another team in the division are minimal at best. He's not a journeyman reliever, he's a decent player with doubles power who very easily could have a bounceback season batting in a line-up where there is a lot more protection all around him...that makes a big difference (Dye/Thome/Konerko/Quentin versus Jose Guillen and Alex Gordon to protect you!) I wouldn't mind Kelly Johnson at all. Finally, I have so-so confidence at best in the names you mentioned (Contreras, Poreda, Broadway, Richard) having a huge impact on the rotation next year. Maybe I'll be proven wrong. I think Poreda needs one more season to work on his command/control and offspeed stuff...Richard is ideally the 2nd lefty out of the pen...Contreras, the rest might be great for his arm, but I'm not sure his aging lower body can survive another season with all the weight you put on an Achilles'/ankle. Fingers crossed on that one.

She's just a lot more fun to look at than baseball players, IMO. Maybe I should change to Kathy Bates, Sandra Bernhardt or The Golden Girls for my avatar? Rosie O'Donnell? Roseanne Barr?

This whole thing about race isn't quite as annoying as the NBA, where Steve Nash is "heady/gritty" and black players are "lightning quick" or can jump out the gym, etc. Although "grinders" are USUALLY white players, eg., Erstad/Miles/Eckstein/Getz, etc. Grady Sizemore is probably the best all-around 5 tool athlete in baseball. If it was announced that Mark Ellis signed today (which obviously is impossible) for $4.5 million for 2009 with a team option for 2010 in 2010 for $5.5 million and a buy-out for something like $500K to $1 million, would most Sox fans be happy? I think the reaction would be pretty "blah" about such a move. It would be a pretty big gamble. I guess it depends on what kind of gambles we're also making/taking at 3B and in CF. IF we had Fields as the starter at 3B with Swisher in CF again, and our only "improvement" was Mark Ellis and Clayton Richard was likewise our 5th starter (with Javy Vazquez as the fourth), then I would probably pick this team for 3rd place, at best, maybe 4th.

It's just logical. 1) The highest percentage of growth in baseball demographics is Latin America over the last 10-15 years...with the dropoff in African-Americans perhaps levelling off and eventually stabilizing with the RBI programs as well as the fact that basketball is due for some economic problems if the current economic conditions persist for a few years. You're already starting to see players go to Europe. 2) We have Guillen and Cora, who both should have advantages relating to Spanish born players 3) Guillen was the first Latino/Hispanic manager to win the World Series, and he has HUGE name recognition in Venezuela 4) We have recent examples of success with Damaso Marte (until 05), Alexei Ramirez, Jose Contreras, El Duque, Luis Vizcaino, Ordonez, Carlos Lee, Jose Valentin, etc....going all the way back in history to Minoso and Aparicio. Carlos Quentin sort of counts, lol. And Borchard's family spoke Spanish.

Something I find interesting is that we've put very little money into signing Latin American players to big ($500K plus) signing bonuses...with the dearth of high first round draft picks over the years, I would think there would be something of a focus here. Maybe we can attribute this to problems with Dave Wilder, but it has to go deeper than just the Dominican, because we've struggled with Venezuela as well, despite Guillen being a national hero there to many. I'm not sure where the lack of focus and attention comes from or if it is attributable to KW and JR's philosophy on spending or what it is...just kind of curious. We've invested in a Korean pitcher, Brazilian (Gomes?), we have Silverio and Martinez who may or may not eventually make an impact...but you have to go back to Ordonez and Carlos Lee for some "born and bred" Latin prospects we've incubated from age 16. Of course, we also have Alexei Ramirez, Tadahito Iguchi and Shingo Takatsu as more recent examples of international success...but no Dominicans or Venezuelans, which is about 30-40% of the MLB talent pool right now, along with the developing Asian market/s like China,Taiwan and Korea (and of course Japan).

I'm not going to buy the fact that subbing Ellis for Cabrera is improving our offense somehow...at best, we're treading water. He has played 122 games, 124 games and 117 games in three of the last four years, only once reaching the 150 mark. Cabrera, if nothing else, was very durable and could always be expected to answer the bell. If we want Chris Getz or someone else to get 40+ starts, maybe he's our guy??? I just can't see how his durability improves over time, and why KW would invest $10+ million over 2 years in a 31 year-old 2B who's not really a legit speed threat anymore (probably similar to Cabrera, maybe 5-7 less steals).

"He said that he throws 92 MPH." Well, I guess we'll have about 30 scouts verifying that...and whether it's 92 with wicked movement or 92 MPH Billy Koch style. Big difference.

As long as we don't see Beckham, Ellis AND Getz together...I think that would be giving up way too much offense. He's into his 30's now (warning sign #1 on Ellis), he made $5 million last year (too expensive vis a vis just going with Getz and investing the money elsewhere, as noted with previous discussions about the ROI of putting $10-12 million per year into an aging Hudson)...he hit only .233 with a .694 OPS and he's coming off an injury-plagued year. In fact, he seems to have always had problems with injuries, not quite like Rocco Baldelli, but close. He is good at taking walks and can steal you 18-24 bases per year, but I think we can do better than Mark Ellis. At least I HOPE so.

Hudson at $10-12 million over 3 years. No go. Hudson at $8-10 million over 2 years. Maybe. Mark Ellis...probably not, but a remote possibility. Certainly not on KW's Top 5 "most wanted" list.

I really think we give up a lot of our offensive advantage putting Alexei in CF. Out there in CF, he's good to very good offensively (compared to MLB norms), but if we can get his pop from SS and Beckham's from 2B (assuming we can get 20-25 homers and 75-80 RBI's at 3B)...then we're in REALLY good shape. That does allow us to have a speedster/leadoff hitter like Taveras (not him specifically though!) without many homers in CF...or maybe someone like CoCo Crisp, depending on what we have to give up. If the time horizon on Beckham is mid-2010 as many claim, it makes VERY little sense to go out and sign an Orlando Hudson long-term or trade for Chone Figgins, unless you really want to lock Beckham in at 3B...which is where it seems he would be the worst fit offensively (saying that not projecting as a corner infielder type of hitter, but more of a line drive, doubles/gap hitter who will get 18-24 per season due to Comiskey). OTOH, KW is always in a "win now" mode, and Beckham, AT BEST, MIGHT make us more competitive in 2010...so I'm not sure Beckham's development is influencing KW's "in the present" decision-making process as of yet.

No, the poster (I thought) wanted Poreda in bullpen with Thornton as closer (with Jenks traded)...at least I thought, maybe my brain's not functioning before 8 am here in Thailand. I thought Poreda in the rotation and Richard as the 2nd lefty (Logan's spot) was a better choice, but only if Poreda's secondary pitches are good enough now to get through the line-up 2-3 times.

But aren't Poreda and Thornton essentially similar pitchers....with Poreda a tick or two slower with the FB? Both of them have meh/so-so sliders and off-speed pitches. Something of a big game to go into season relying on Dotel and Linebrink again, but there's not much choice but to hold onto Scott coming off the last two months and maybe trading Dotel for a couple of AA/AAA relievers with electric but inconsistent stuff...or major league relievers in their first 3 seasons. Somebody mentioned Villanueva from MIL as an example of one of these pitchers, as part of a possibly Hardy/Vazquez deal. Maybe it makes more sense with Poreda in the rotation and Richard as the 5th starter? It all depends on how confident they are in Poreda sustaining velocity, not getting hammered when he gets behind in the count and how his stuff translates the second or third time through the line-up.

Having lived in KC for about 10 years.... 1) DeJesus is more popular and is more identified with the Royals than Swisher ever will/would be 2) The Royals' fans are somewhat oblivious to West Coast players because of the time zone difference 3) Remember, they need players to be identified as "Royals" to build the brand again with Mike Sweeney gone 4) They have Teahen and Gordon for 3B, and Shealy/Gload at 1st, not a trade partner for Fields unless it's back to LF (and they don't want that in such a spacious outfield that plays big except in July-mid September) 5) Swisher, if he hits as normally expected, should be paid right around the same salary as Swisher, so there's negligible difference...the Royals do need to get back more pop, but the only logical place for Swisher there would be in RF (if they move Teahen) or 1B. Or they can DH Jose Guillen more often and not put him in RF/LF (although Guillen's arm is still a decent asset, his speed is definitely not now that he's aging).
