Because Lance Briggs was designated as a franchise player, the Bears cannot sign him to a long-term contract until the first calendar day of the 2008 season, which I believe is the same day that free agency begins in late February or early March. It’s interesting to note, however, that the two sides can negotiate during the season if they are so inclined. In terms of whether the Bears will ultimately sign Briggs to a long-term deal, I’d have to say that the chances of that are remote.
