  2. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 30, 2006 -> 10:24 AM) This offense is, without a doubt, hands down, much better than last year's offense. There isn't an argument you could make that would sway any other person on this site in the least. Sure, this '06 team hasn't proven to be better or even as good as the 2005 team, but that's because the starting pitching has been awful. This '06 offense has proven to be undeniably better than the '05 offense. Hell, if the pitching was as good as it was last year with the new and improved offense, the Sox might have lost 20 games to this point. The raw numbers support you, but the mix of guys in '05 was special. It was a shame to break them up. On July 30, 2005 the White Sox were 67-35. They had scored 501 runs and yielded 409, +92 This year they are 61-41 having scored 581 runs and yielding 495, +86. 6 run differential = 6 game differential? What ever, I've been beating this dead horse since the trades (I'm getting like Hanger). Going forward, I am very excited about what KW has done with year's bullpen. If they start getting some quality starts they could leave last year's team in the dust.
  3. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jul 30, 2006 -> 09:06 AM) Would that be the same Carl Everett that was DFA'd by Seattle? That be he. They cut him before his '07 contract could vest. Would you prefer Everett or Makowiak as 4th OF? Would you prefer Rowand or Anderson as everyday CF? Thome is having a better year than Thomas, but the year isn't over. Either can get hurt again, and either can catch on fire again. I just don't buy that the '06 team has proven to be better or even as good as (remove hat) the World Champion 2005 Chicago White Sox.
  4. QUOTE(shoota @ Jul 29, 2006 -> 09:40 PM) No Sox fan who wants to win is upset we didn't keep Frank. Rob Mackowiak, Jim Thome, Brian N. Anderson have combined for 42 HR, 121 RBI. Carl Everett, Frank Thomas, Aaron Rowand have combined for 43 HR 128 RBI. I don't see the huge gain.
  5. The poison in this deal is Crede's back. I don't think it would be prudent to go 5-6 years guaranteed with a guy at that position who has bad discs, and I doubt the White Sox will. But somebody else might run the risk. Joe has done a wonderful job of diffusing the White Sox V Boras bad history issue and keeping things professional, but when it comes down to nuts and bolts, I predict length of contract will cause Joe to go FA and move on.
  6. Thursday: off Pitches thrown Friday: Cotts 6 MacDougal 14 Thornton 4 Jenks 15 Pitches thrown yesterday: McCarthy 36 Cotts 24 MacDougal 17 Thornton 4 Jenks 16 Brandon might be just a little bit iffy but the rest should all be good to go today. While we all would prefer that Mac had covered 2 or 3 innings, I don't see how it is any fault of Ozzie's that he used up 36 pitches to cover 1. David Riske has not been used for 3 days. Considering the beer league softball game played yesterday, the pen is in as good as shape as could be hoped for.
  7. QUOTE(iamshack @ Jul 26, 2006 -> 05:44 PM) The reason he was DFA'd is because the Mariners dealt a minor league OF to Cleveland for Ben Broussard. And as Roto mentioned, his option for next year was about to vest: From the World Series Championship roster Everett, Harris, Widger and Politte have now been DFA'd. Timo Perez was already sent to AAA. It's unlikely that Hermanson will see the majors again, and rumors have El Duque on thin ice in New York as soon as they can find an arm to replace him. The sum was indeed greater than the parts.
  8. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 26, 2006 -> 05:30 PM) I don't really see what's so funny about it. If you're using a wood bat you can take a bone and rub it up and down the bat (boning) filling in many of the gaps with bone hense hardening the bat. It's pretty much standard practice. I guess some of the terminology might be relatively humorous if you're in Junior High. It's better backwards: I don't really see what's so funny about it. If you're using a wood bone you can take a bat and rub it up and down the bone (batting) filling in many of the gaps with bat hense hardening the bone. It's pretty much standard practice. I guess some of the terminology might be relatively humorous if you're in Junior High. Sorry Kalapse, its been a very long, very bad day, and not just for the White Sox.
  9. A very low risk move by the White Sox. LaMura has a lot of guys ahead of him so it's not likely he was on any 3 yr board. If Alomar works out, fine, if not they bring Stewart up. Theres only 6 weeks until rosters expand, if they can get half a dozen good games out of Alomar they should be happy. One other note, I was at the Sunday game that Man Soo Lee missed to go to a graduation. Nobody came out to warm up the starter so Coop, of all people, had to start the long tossing himself. Then Widge came running out late and took over. Not a good idea to piss off the coaches when you're hitting .184.
  10. I see Sal Fasano was DFA'd by the Phillies yesterday. His knee has been acting up and they didn't have anybody with options they wanted to send down. He is a career back up, lifetime .225 hitter who has played for everybody at one time or another.
  11. Guys, it's just baseball. --Good thing this board wasn't up for the 1970 season.
  12. Dewey La Marr Hoyt. Take Mark Buehrle's heart and transplant it into Freddy Garcia's body and you can picture how he used to pitch. He threw in the low 90's, attacked every hitter, and left nothing in the locker room. Unfortunatly he self destructed in his personal life. Incidently, one of the guys the Sox got for him when they traded him to San Diego was Ozzie Guillen.
  13. QUOTE(knightni @ Jul 22, 2006 -> 11:53 AM) IIRC, there was no WS during the latter part of WWII either. There was a lot of debate after Pearl Harbor about whether pro baseball should be played during war time. FDR settled the matter with this January 15, 1942 letter to Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis and the games went on. Baseball Almanac Wartime WS Winners: 1942 St. Louis Cardinals 1943 New York Yankees 1944 St. Louis Cardinals 1945 Detroit Tigers
  14. A bad night by the opposition starter.
  15. After his spanking in the 3rd inning, Mark looked like the Mark of old. He threw 4 scoreless innings with pitch counts of 8, 7, 7 and 13. Thats 35 pitches, 28 were strikes. Maybe he was tipping earlier or maybe he just stopped thinking and just went back to thowing to spots with stuff. I'm going to bookmark that point of time in my memory. It reminds of Garlands game against the Tigers in June. He gave up 6 runs in the loss but was making better pitches --he hasn't been beaten since. Buehrle should take the positive last 4 innings with him and go get them next time.
  16. Since 1901 there have been 100 World Series winners with a chance to repeat. There was no WS in 1904 or 1994. Here's what the winner did following year: 21 Won World Series 38 Won League Penant 15 Won Division 2 Won Wild Card Here are finishes in their respective leagues / divisions: 1st 41 2nd 24 3rd 20 4th 5 5th 3 6th 4 7th 3 The teams that finished 7th were the 64 Dodgers, 65 Cardinals and 67 Orioles. Thats one record that can't be broken.
  17. Our old buddy Hunter Wendelstedt is behind the plate tonight. Could be an interesting evening.
  18. QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Jul 20, 2006 -> 07:55 PM) anyone think the Tigers will wiin 109 games, their current pace? No but the clock is ticking, if the Tigers play .500 the rest of the way they will finish with 98 wins. The Sox would need to play .600 ball the rest of the way to match them. It could happen. The Tigers are playing .674 ball right now, if they continue the Sox would need to play .750 to tie. Now were talking unlikely. One thing I have learned as a baseball fan, everyday is a new day, you can't tell whats going to happen until it happens.
  19. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jul 18, 2006 -> 10:43 PM) Ramon Martinez: injuries Dwight Gooden: Druggy Can't really speak on what happened to the others since they were a bit before my time. I don't think Mark is any of them. I think Mark is a Glavine like pitcher. Blue lasted 17 years, going 209-161; Viola 15 years, 176-150 so they don't really belong on the list. Burns had a congenital hip condition. Hoyt broke my heart, he fast laned his way out of the bigs on burittos, alcohol and cocaine.
  20. QUOTE(Contreras @ Jul 18, 2006 -> 07:32 PM) "I said I had a feeling he'd (Konerko) hit a homer tonight, didn't I?" Am I imagining things, or does he say that he has that feeling about Paulie in every single game? Kind of like mlbtraderumors.com or ESPN's rumormongering geniuses...If you just say "Team x will make a big trade before the deadline" about every team in baseball, you get to say you're right at the end. He first mentioned it during Kornerko's AB in the 4th when he grounded out to Inge. He had popped to RF earlier so, at least this time, give Farmio a pass.
  21. QUOTE(VAfan @ Jul 15, 2006 -> 07:52 PM) How many seasons do you think Buerhle has had games where he have given up 7, 8, and 11 runs? Every season he has been a starter. Yesterday was the 22nd time in his career.
  22. TLAK

    Buehrle

Ozzie: "Right now, the way I see it is the cutter is not cutting, the changeup is not changing and the fastball is not fast," said Guillen of Buehrle, whose ERA jumped to 4.43. "When you are facing a team like that, you have to bring those pitches down and make pitches. If Buehrle stays up, he's going to get killed. That's not his style."
  23. Here is how Javier is doing compared to the rest of the starting 5. The numbers are: # of games with an era indicated in the Game ERA column, W-L record and Average Innings pitched in those games. Having Javier on the team is like dating the best looking girl in school, on a good night it's fantastic but when she is bad it's very expensive and frustrating. I bashed KW and the trade when it was made and remain convinced that the White Sox could have done as well or better with Brandon McCarthy starting, keeping Vizcaino and Young. Then using El Duke either in Brandon's present role or trading him for a reliever should he have insisted on starting. The DBacks got Jorge Julio for him, a 27 year old righty with a 3.66 ERA 1.14 WHIP who would have fit in quite nicely along side Viz. We would have been spared the Logan, Montero, Nelson, Tracey ordeal. Water under the dam.
  24. In 2005 89 pitchers appeared in 30 or more games and made 15 or more starts. They had an average salary of $4,026,593. 148 pitchers appeared in 30 or more games and had less than 15 starts. Average salary was $1,427,183. As in little league, college or the minors the best pitchers are used to start games and with a few exceptions, that’s where the money is. Neal is 26 years old in this 3rd full season, after his reserve and arb years, if he can put in 5 years as an average starter instead of a reliever it could mean a difference of 13 million dollars. That’s a lot of money, even in Belleville, IL. He has to try for it, even if he has to agitate or move to another team.
  25. Kevin Millar on MLB.com: "The sinker was down pat, sinker after sinker after sinker," added Millar of Garland's mound prowess. "It was like he was throwing bowling balls." Best quote I've seen in a while.
