North v South
QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Mar 12, 2008 -> 08:51 PM) I'll put my views into this. I believe it was Texsox that said the south does a very good job as adressing elders as Mr. and Mrs., hold doors open, push chairs in. Being from Iowa, I've always been told to do that, I guess I've thought that to be just as much Midwestern values as it is Southeran values. It's probably more courtesy values than anything else. I haven't thought that the North is superior to the South, I consider this country as a whole. If anything, Iowa has a rivaly with Minnesota, we like to make fun of each other. If I was a Civil War reenactor, I'd chose the North since I'm from the North. I don't have much experience going farther south than Missouri other than two times. The first time I was 15 and went to Arkansas, some locals wanted to play with us, but they're accents were so strange to me I couldn't help but laugh a little bit, but then I got over that quickly and we got along with the kids for the week. They were pretty fun to play with. The second time I had just graduated and my friends and I were going to New Orleans. We stopped in Mississippi and the people there were friendly. They'd come up and ask where we were from and stuff like that. I've always been more reserved and maybe northerners keep to themselves more than southerners, I'm not sure. But if someome comes up and talks to me, I'll talk to them and carry on a conversation. Anyways one question I wonder, maybe some of you history buffs and answer this but right after the Civil War ended, and into the 20th Century, the South were primarily Democrat and African-Americans were primarily Republican, at least in Iowa. Now it's the complete reversal. Anyone have a reason for that? I'd tend to say it's Iowa vs. Missouri here. One thing I noticed here in Ames was people opened doors for other people. A lot. It was almost weird.

Big 12 Tournament
QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Mar 12, 2008 -> 09:49 PM) Where's Heads? I'm not the biggest fan of our basketball program right now. Our women's team is on a roll, and the Spring Game is in our sights. There's a hell of a lot more excitement around football in Ames. I thought 45k for home games for a 1 and 2 win team in November said something about the focus around here, especially when we couldn't get 12,000 for the Kansas game in basketball.

So Brian Anderson's hitting...
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 12, 2008 -> 07:05 PM) I dunno, 80 home runs, lotta OPS, solid defense from that OF? Seems good all around. That's if Quentin can stay healthy though. If somehow all these OF's came around, and Owens could come up with a .350+ OBP and stay healthy, then suddenly, we're in a position of strength, and we're able to move 2 of Dye, Thome, and Konerko, save a boatload of money in the process, move 1 of them to DH and keep them healthier, and maybe even get better as we get a bit younger, faster, and play better defense. s***, I'm just expecting that from BA now.

March 12th Spring Baseball Game Discussion
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 12, 2008 -> 05:18 PM) Even if they're approaching healthy...if he keeps this up, there's no good reason, even from a guy who likes both Quentin and Owens, to put either of them in the big leagues over BA (put Owens as the 4th OF or Hell call it a platoon at worst). Having Anderson turn in to a solid OF dramatically improves this team for this year and in future years. It turns any OF for the next 5 years into a solid defensive OF no matter what. It gives us a lot more flexibility in that we go back to holding 4 young OF's under contract for the next 4+ years, along with JD. It gives us the ability to move either JD or PK directly to DH next year, or even this year, if Thome's option isn't picked up or if he struggles with injuries. And if somehow we decide that we're in a position to move a veteran player, it allows us the flexibility to move either JD or PK for a good haul and still be able to fill their shoes. While we have no idea how this will translate, if this is at least part of an indication of some improvement on Brian's part for this year, that makes us that much better.

March 12th Spring Baseball Game Discussion
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Mar 12, 2008 -> 05:14 PM) He's certainly had quite a game then today. Whatever happens, at least BA has come out and performed so far in ST. Whatever the Sox decide to do with him, at least if they decide to move him, they should get some decent value now. But right now, with the question marks on Owens and Quentin, BA may have played himself into a bench job. If they're both hurt, he may be playing himself into the CF job.

So Brian Anderson's hitting...
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 12, 2008 -> 02:13 PM) Someone may have pointed this out already...but this isn't true. Mackowiak was the starting CF on game 2 of the regular season that year. And the substitution pattern almost never stopped, no matter how many balls Mack missplayed, no matter how many times Anderson saved a game with a catch (Hafner's fly ball vs. Cleveland), no matter how much Anderson's batting improved in the 2nd half of the season, no matter how many times Mack said he was ill suited for CF. It was a platoon from day 1. And while the whole platoon situation didn't work out well for Brian, I also think it gave people a bad view of Rob. He knew he stunk in CF, but he was still valuable as a super-sub. I didn't want to see him traded - a lefty bat who can play the corners and the infield who is a Sox fan to boot.

North v South
QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Mar 12, 2008 -> 12:33 PM) That's fine. I actually think southern people are generally MUCH kinder than us up here in the colder, siberian type regions. This, along with waffle houses, are two reasons I enjoy my time in the southland. I'm sure there are a lot of remarks made towards southerners around here though. I honestly don't really have any problems with the south. Even in the case of standing by my accounts of race in the south, the south has really had much less time to improve it's racial relations than the north with the roots in the civil war and the 60's riots and such being most based in the south. So even in standing by what I said about it being more racist in the south, I would also counter my own statement by saying there has been tenfold more race relations improvement in the south than in the north since, say, 1970. It wouldn't surprise me either if a generation from now, when i'm in my mid 40's, if the north is eventually more racist, because as the generations go by, the south is improving in this department moreso than the north. It's just right now I think what I think, in large part because the north had a huge head start going back generations to improve race relations. But maybe if I had clarified it in this way at the start, it wouldn't have hit a nerve with you, even if you disagree with me. You had me til Waffle House.

So Brian Anderson's hitting...
QUOTE(SoxWS05 @ Mar 12, 2008 -> 12:57 PM) No doubt about it, but whats more important CF or lead off? I can't say, but it would be nice to have a guy who could steal bases at the top of the lineup. Also, I don't see Anderson being a CF who can gun someone out at home on a sac fly. Anderson constantly gunned it over the catcher at times. He's got a cannon, but he's had trouble with accuracy. Since the #1 batter leads off an inning maybe twice a game, it's importance (as far as wheels/speed) is overblown compared to someone who can just get on base in front of your big guns.

So Brian Anderson's hitting...
QUOTE(SoxWS05 @ Mar 12, 2008 -> 12:49 PM) The CF doesn't really need a strong arm though. Speed is more of an issue. (see Johnny Damon, Juan Pierre) Well, Anderson is also a better fielder than Owens as it is and from what I saw last year.

So Brian Anderson's hitting...
You know, I still wish we could have swung Gar to LA in a deal for Furcal. That would have solved a real handful of issues.

So Brian Anderson's hitting...
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 12, 2008 -> 12:39 PM) Speaking of which, has anyone seen him make any throws from the OF this spring? Owens was also supposedly dealing with a minor shoulder issue last year. I have yet to see the Sox play, but the book on him throughout the minors was that he was a LF, due to the lack of great fielding ability and arm. So, if there was an injury, it's either been there a long while or his arm is really that bad.

So Brian Anderson's hitting...
QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Mar 12, 2008 -> 12:34 PM) his wrist was injured in '06? He gets hurt every year. He hurt his wrist, had rotator cuff tendonitis and a concussion all in 2007. I want to say he had some wrist issues in '06 though. If not, I do believe he missed some time, but I may be thinking of 05.
-
So Brian Anderson's hitting...
I still don't consider Owens anything more than a LF, and would have had no problem with him being an option there. I just don't like it when your CF has to two hop it to the cutoff man.

Gunman Threat at UNI
Residence Halls Still Under Lockdown By: Nick Weig, Producer Story Created: Mar 11, 2008 Story Updated: Mar 12, 2008 CEDAR FALLS - A highly placed source tells KCRG-TV9 that the situation at UNI has been contained. The man they were looking for has been found. He did make it onto campus, but so far there's no word whether or not he had a weapon. UNI Police continue to take precautionary measures based on the information so far. They do not believe there is an imminent threat, however, Dancer Hall and the other UNI Residence Halls are still locked as a precaution. UNI Police, Cedar Falls Police and the Iowa State Patrol are actively involved in this investigation. UNI Police received a threat of a gunman coming to campus to confront a student in Dancer Hall.

Rove taunted at University of Iowa
QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Mar 11, 2008 -> 05:19 PM) No kidding. I makes Waterloo look like conservative farmers or something. I think Heads will agree with this, but a lot of students at Iowa, at least one's that I know, seem to have a lot of arrogance and think they're better than any other school in the state. They come off as being rude a lot and constantly make fun of Iowa State thinking they're rejects or whatever. I'm sure a lot of states have rivalries between the schools, but students at Iowa are a lot more disrespectful than students at ISU are. I don't know if this is true or not but my friend said there is not one registered Republican that teaches in Political Science or History. Seems interesting but maybe it's not a big deal. I don't care too much since I don't go there. There's little doubt. The weird thing is they are no where near the same way to UNI or Drake.
