QUOTE (Wanne @ Jan 18, 2014 -> 01:01 PM) this is my FAVORITE ALL-TIME picture from Spring Training here. It's our parking lot next to Peoria Sports Complex after the Cubs were hear playing the Mariners! Hahaaa......Lovable Effing Losers!!! Let me guess.... He mistook the asphalt for his baby crib on the streets from his childhood? Need a binky or a diaper?

QUOTE (Pale Sox @ Jan 18, 2014 -> 02:44 PM) It's my understanding that the posting fee is spread out (I believe over two years?) and not paid as a lump sum. Si, quarto payments para dos anyos

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jan 18, 2014 -> 02:34 PM) Whoa, retract the panties there darling. Money and payroll is a huge part of discussion around here, always has been. Menstruated conversation leading to devoid conceptual musings.

QUOTE (Lillian @ Jan 18, 2014 -> 03:55 AM) Thanks for the clarification. Epstein was probably just lucky. I doubt that he knew it wouldn't translate as bad as it sounds in English. "Commodity" certainly isn't the best English word to use, if the intention is to show respect. Most Americans wouldn't think anything of it, but I understand that Japanese culture is quite different. Oh man, we're really all itching for some action. It's not like Epstein said, " He's a valued vagina..." I just watched the videos on chisox.com from the hitting camp. That was more exciting than the past few days here playing the refresh game. Highly recommended.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 02:05 PM) Scotch is still a wonderful thing in moderation, but I understand that moderation can be a difficult thing. What is this "moderation" thing you speak of?

I was drunk for the first 30,066 hours of my Soxtalk posting career. Many stupid things occurred - none of which I recall. Scotch was a wonderful thing.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 01:32 PM) No. I'd go 6-7 years at $20 mill with a player opt out option after 4 years. There's only a 5M AAV difference there. IMO - Give him the extra 5, throw in the opt out clause and he's ours for sure. Our payroll this year would then return to around 112M and with Dunn off the books next year, we're not handcuffed in any way by this hypothetical Tanaka signing. Would I rather have 5 years at 20M? Sure! I just think if we want him we'll have to pony up big time. Of course - this is all meaningless speculation - just like much of what is out there at the moment. Things shall be getting interesting soon

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 01:26 PM) I'm beginning to expect Tanaka to sign with the White Sox. Would you be ok with 175/7? If that's what it took - I'm in. Thankfully I'm not a GM - as you can see - blowing my wad is ummm... Likely to happen.

QUOTE (JoshPR @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 01:24 PM) MLB network saying Jon heyman reporting both Chicago teams are front runners for tanaka. Just said on MLB network Say hello to the latest Casey Close leak who is attempting to drive LA/NY bids higher. Really, I'm just attempting to temper my expectations. If Tanaka is signed - I'll bring my wife and new born to Chicago for 7 home games in 2014. I'd be ecstatic.

QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 01:17 PM) MASAHIRO TANAKA: This week, the Cubs were the team making the most news in the chase to land the right-hander who went 24-0 with a 1.27 ERA for the Rakuten Golden Eagles in Japan last year, because the Cubs were the team that met with Tanaka, which meant that the Cubs were the team that could project optimism, both on the record, and through sources. Don't go ordering that jersey just yet, though. As Gordon Wittenmyer wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times, "breathless national reports via Twitter and blogs Thursday overshot the Cubs’ likelihood of hanging with the big-spending favorites in New York and Los Angeles in the process, especially when the Dodgers reminded the world of their willingness to spend by giving ace Clayton Kershaw a record-setting contract extension this week — after dealing with the same agent representing Tanaka." Tanaka makes a ton of sense for the Cubs, as he does for pretty much every team in baseball — as evidenced by the Dodgers' drive to add Tanaka to a rotation that already includes Kershaw, Zack Greinke, Hyun-Jin Ryu, and Dan Haren, with Josh Beckett and Chad Billingsley recovering from injuries. Maybe the Cubs really impressed Tanaka with talk of how they are working with a foundation of prospects to become contenders very soon. It's probably best, though, not to pretend like Tanaka is going to choose his team before he has completed his due diligence. We'll know next week, when the deadline comes for Tanaka to sign and for the team winning his services to pay the $20 million posting fee to Rakuten. Anything before that is guesswork. http://www.sportingnews.com/mlb/story/2014...za-stephen-drew So you're telling me he'll be an Astro by tomorrow?

We're talking about the quality of my life increasing 20% if this guy is signed.

QUOTE (southside hitman @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 12:37 PM) As a Sox fan, I am conflicted on if the Yankees or Cubs signing Tanaka would disguise me the most. If not the Sox, I hope Arizona gets him. I'm just happy we only have 9 more days of this poop... at most! Really thou, if it's not the white sox - I'm hoping he goes to LA. The dodgers would sure be a fun team to watch with Kershaw and tanaka both locked up.

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jan 14, 2014 -> 09:06 PM) “We try to keep in mind that it’s Jan. 14 and we still have a ways to go,” Hahn said. “But just watching Jose go through his work, you saw that professionalism as well as the plus-plus power on display today in only his first couple of rounds of BP. He’s a very serious hitter. He’s one who goes up there with a plan and has a great deal of ability and it’s going to be fun to see how this plays out over the next couple of years.” It is kind of awesome that we're still 30 days away from the start of spring training - and yet - we're already getting quotes like this from some on the field action. Nice.
