QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 20, 2014 -> 03:21 PM) I am okay with this, especially with what he would have gotten in arbitration. I do think he's the type of reliever that will have his share of good years (along with his share of bad years). Agreed. He will have another good year at some point, but he can do it somewhere else.

QUOTE (Andy the Clown @ Nov 20, 2014 -> 06:42 PM) I'd rather have Davis than LaRoche. Given the potential contracts, I think I might agree with this.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 20, 2014 -> 11:37 AM) I got the answer correct, but it was just a lucky guess. Those are fun. Ha, so did I. Given how he was acquired, I figured there were some other transactions preceding that one that went further back in time. I didn't actually try to trace them all, he just seemed like a good guess. White Sox figured prominently in two other franchises lineage. -
QUOTE (hi8is @ Nov 20, 2014 -> 02:39 AM) Phil Rodgers actually hits the entire article dead on IMO. 5 Things the Sox Should Do Next There's no way Phil Rogers actually wrote that. It's all way too logical and makes too much sense.

QUOTE (raBBit @ Nov 19, 2014 -> 08:25 PM) Braves release Jonny Venters. Admittedly, I don't know much about him but I am interested. He was almost the lefty Craig Kimbrel, that's how good he was. But the Braves Dusty Bakered him, hasn't pitched since 2012 after having his 2nd and 3rd Tommy John surgeries. -
QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Nov 19, 2014 -> 06:31 PM) I don't know what an identity management expert is, so I'm probably not one. It's the guy that gets Jason Bourne all of his passports.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 19, 2014 -> 12:08 PM) If a fast food restaurant - say Crazy George's - was willing to pay people $30 an hour to put out the best fast food in the area while taking home microscopic profit margins, while the rest of the fast food restaurants - say "Tampa Tacos" - gave the typical $10 an hour to take home bigger profits while putting out a lesser quality product, I doubt people would say "those people are Crazy George's are way overpaid." Economic theory says no one is ever overpaid and that people will only ever be underpaid. Someone/Something may be paid/may cost more than you were willing to spend, but someone out there is willing to spend that amount for that service/product at that price, and thus it is valued properly. The problem never lies in that. The problem lies in our inability to properly determine the depreciation of that service over time. A lot of times these services depreciate way faster than we realize they will, even after time and time again we see it do the same thing, partly because we've seen it work previously (both the service and extending the life of the service) and because the known is better than the unknown until it's not or the unknown becomes known. Nice analogy, but I slightly disagree with the bolded. I don't think it's necessarily an inability to properly determine depreciation, I think it's an ability to ignore future depreciation for the sake of success today. The consensus seemed to be that Russell Martin was good for a 4-year contract. Why did Toronto give him a 5-year deal? It's not simply because they figured he will still be good in the 5th year, it's because they need him now and that's what it took to get him onboard. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 19, 2014 -> 10:33 AM) They have stepped up and paid for FAs before, Matt Holliday being the most recent example. That's true, but they had already traded for him mid-season, then decided to re-sign him. Their offseason MO seems to be targeted towards the mid-tier free agents, not the $100 million dollar guys. And of course those mid-tier guys always seem to perform above and beyond their contracts.

QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Nov 19, 2014 -> 07:37 AM) He's a FA SP with a good track record, he's going to get a ridiculous amount of money from any team he signs with, he's not going back to Boston or the Cubs for a feel good story, he's going to end up in the place that offers him the most $$ Which means there is zero chance he ends up with the Cardinals, that's not how they do business.

QUOTE (knightni @ Nov 19, 2014 -> 07:06 AM) Any thoughts on Jonas Gray doing anything this week? They are not gonna be able to run the ball on Detroit like they did vs. Indy. If they have to pass it more, one would think Vereen would see more action. That being said, with Belichick, you are just playing RB roulette. -

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 03:57 PM) With McCoy he has been very good though and was for most of his tenure in San Diego. In regards to Romo, I've always felt he was good and largely impacted by stupid play calling and awful defenses. The guy I've long felt to be overrated is Manning but he does have the two 2 SB's. He is a streaky QB who when he goes on a run, he's very elite but he also has significant moments where he is the exact opposite. I actually think him and Jay are kind of similar players with the exception that Jay hasn't gotten hot at the right time. If you look at Eli's career numbers, they are very unimpressive. -

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 03:51 PM) Romo and Rivers don't belong on that list. Rivers can be so up & down from one game to the next, I just have a hard time trusting him consistently. I actually think Romo does get a bad rap, but he just always seems good for those one or two bad plays. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 12:36 PM) Colleen Kane @ChiTribKane 51s52 seconds ago Zach Duke's deal with White Sox is a 3-year, $15 million contract. $4.5 million in 2015, $5 million 2016, $5.5 million in 2017. Meh, overpay, especially the 3rd year. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 12:24 PM) I do wonder what kind of bounceback Either would have with every day playing time. The problem with everyday playing time is that he has never hit LHP well. Give him the start everyday against righties, that's over 2/3 of the time anyway, I bet he does well.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 12:12 PM) I am going to guess 3/17, including a $1 million buyout option for a 4th year at $7 million. That would be very risky, can't approve of anything over two years. He was cut halfway through 2013 with an 8.01 ERA. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 18, 2014 -> 10:29 AM) They did give up on Neal Cotts. That worked out pretty well. Neal Cotts has had two good seasons as a middle reliever and they were 8 years apart. I doubt the Athletics lose sleep over trading him away.
