QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 10:45 AM) Yankees didn't think he was worth of a 40 man roster spot, IIRC. They did not want to lose him, and tried to bring him back on a minor league deal. That does sound familiar now. They had Betances and Banuelos (sp?) and whoever else and just saw Q lower on the totem pole. Thanks Cashman!

295 dead aboard Malaysian Airlines shot down over Ukraine.
LittleHurt05 replied to Buehrle>Wood's topic in SLaM
Oh boy. I'm gonna wait until facts are confirmed, but if it was shot down by Ukrainian rebels, s*** is about to hit the fan. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 08:22 AM) I'm sure he'll get in exactly as much trouble as Lance Briggs did for totaling a car and then leaving the scene so that he didn't get caught. Maybe in Chicago, but the story was in Spring Training in Arizona, they actually care about that stuff down there. Barkley, La Russa, Grace, etc.

QUOTE (glangon @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 08:55 AM) I'd rather have Joc Pederson So would the Dodgers, but they can't just cut Matt Kemp

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 08:12 AM) He throws 99 MPH. Sometimes, you take a chance on these guys and they turn into all stars. Forget about his numbers. Maybe it's OK to stop being cynical at every turn and realize that they can also just get rid of this guy for virtually no cost whatsoever too. There is no risk and a very high reward. I joked about the guy, but of course I see no issue with claiming anybody with a whiff of talent. I just wonder that if a team as devoid of pitching like the Rockies dumped him, the chances of him amounting to something are even slimmer.

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jul 17, 2014 -> 08:17 AM) Also if w're talking about small finds here that turned into something much bigger, the same guy who found & recommended Mark to us also found a guy named Albert Pujols who of course we didn't draft. I'm sure there are lots of others but IIRC Pujols went 5th round or later, so that one kind of hurts. Pujols was a 13th round pick

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Jul 16, 2014 -> 09:40 PM) No, its so simple. 1) They want to break up Sale-Quintana-Danks 2) They would rather have Sale face KC then Astros I think rest has a little something to do with it too. They have done like that in the past, where they can give him a nice long stretch of down time missing a fewer amount of games.

So was this a case of Coop fixing him or the Yankees just being too dumb to realize what they had?
-
Given how well your cousin has done, it sounds like he's got a good head on his shoulders. That makes me think you should just back off and leave him alone. The grass is always greener on the other side. You just see the money and think everything's gravy, sometimes there is more than that. If he truly doesn't like it, mental health trumps money. It's not uncommon in that industry to get worn out and leave. Given his education and work history, it seems like he'll end up doing very well whatever he puts his mind too.

Yes or No, Danks for Santiago straight-up

QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ Jul 16, 2014 -> 09:14 PM) Carroll is a nice long man, he can handle it. Hector being demoted has kept his IP total down, we'd be able to get 5-6IP/game out of him for the rest of the year easy. Maybe he doesn't work much deeper than that, but that's what Coop is for! Also our team is garbage, there's holes all over this thing. I don't mind opening them wherever so long as there is at least a little bit of youth and upside to plug in there. KW & Hahn should like Hector still, he is a grinder on the mound with a football mentality. I wasn't referring to this year. I am talking about 2015 & 2016. Danks is a proven starter, Santiago is not. I don't want to go in to 2015 with Carroll in the rotation. -

No thanks. The Sox have enough holes in the rotation, why create another one? -
That article conveniently omits how many walks he has thrown.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 13, 2014 -> 02:22 PM) .240 average, 17 homers, 118 games played LOL. Somebody was pessimistic and overly worried about the Konerko signing.

QUOTE (farmteam @ Jul 16, 2014 -> 09:57 AM) Right. And Kluwe was due 1.45 million for 2013. Because the line between him and some rookie is awfully slim, why wouldn't the Vikings want to save that money? Which would put him just above the middle of the pack of all punters in the league. You are right, from a football standpoint it makes complete sense to cut him. Just had everything been the same minus the distractions, I still think they may have kept him. -

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 16, 2014 -> 09:15 AM) And all of this is fine, this sort of thing happens, players get cut for being distractions and declining skills. The Priefer stuff is what is wrong and unnacceptable, though. Absolutely. I don't think that specifically played a part in his release though. -

QUOTE (farmteam @ Jul 16, 2014 -> 09:14 AM) I look at it this way -- if Kluwe was a better punter and/or cheaper, they could have (and would have) put up with any perceived distractions. But he wasn't, so he was getting released even if he was the quietest guy in the locker room. Getting rid of those perceived distractions was a bonus for them. He's a punter though. Unless you're Shane Lechler, the line between you and the next guy is awfully slim. I honestly think the distractions were more than a bonus, they were part of the reason, but it was easily marked off as a football decision. -
HOF considering not counting blank ballots

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 16, 2014 -> 09:02 AM) That's stupid. So you have to vote for someone for the HoF even when you don't believe anyone deserves it? That's a great way to get undeserving guys in there I was worried about that too, but given that you need 75% of the vote, I'd say the odds of someone getting voted in simply because of this rule would be slim. -

QUOTE (farmteam @ Jul 16, 2014 -> 08:58 AM) I'm not sure if the Vikings ever promised to release the report to the public, but I do think they promised to release the report to Kluwe. Now they're not doing either. According to a "source" the Vikings backtracked because the report came up with some pretty damning stuff. I honestly never thought his release was solely, or even substantially, about Kluwe's politics. It was about what it always is -- money. He wasn't good enough to justify making what he was due. Even if their rookie punter was worse, he'd be a hell of a lot cheaper. Now, once the Vikings decided to release him from a money/performance perspective, I wouldn't be surprised if also getting rid of what they may have viewed as a distraction was an added bonus. Frankly, the Twin Cities culture is incredibly LGBT friendly (at least as much as one can be, sadly), so Kluwe's views weren't as much of a "distraction" as they might have been somewhere else. I don't think it was about disagreeing with his politics, I think it was just him being so outspoken was becoming a "distraction" in their eyes. He plays one of the least important positions. He was getting older, his salary was increasing, which made him much easier to replace for football reasons. As he challenged politicans and spoke to every media outlet and was loud on social media, I think the team just said, enough, you are a punter, stop bringing all this extra attention to the team. We will bring someone in at half the salary and at least 90% of the production and they will be much quieter. -
Is Thailand really that boring that all you can think about is the Astros?

I have zero problem with Wainwright grooving a pitch to Jeter. The problem is that the All-Star Game shouldn't count. You can't have it both ways. Every team must be represented and 40-year old Derek Jeter can lead off, but game 7 of the WS is on the line. That's silly. An All-Star game should be about the top players and stars being honored, having some fun and showing off their skills to the fans. Just like the other major sports do it.
-
There are now 3 players who have had a better game than Jeter. Still expect him to get MVP though.

QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jul 15, 2014 -> 05:47 PM) I'd do the same but they really think they have a case with this signed application. I'm just not sure how much merit it holds since I'm not a lawyer. Seriously though, if they think they are so sure fire, why are they trying to settle? As Badger said, the laws in Chicago greatly favor the tenant, especially the security deposit rules. They know that if a lawyer gets involved and they broke a single small law, they could get charged to refund the deposit + more, not to mention attorney fees. Checked those yelp reviews, wow, never seen one that negative.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 15, 2014 -> 03:42 PM) Chuck Garfien @ChuckGarfien 49m Nelson Cruz asked Jose Abreu to sign a baseball. Abreu joked, "Hundred dollars." Jeez Jose, you make more money than him, show some heart!

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 15, 2014 -> 01:17 PM) Well, I am obviously reading just like you are, but from what I have read, they are saying there is nothing wrong with this kid. The way this comment is worded is what I question. Maybe it's just the way Will Carroll tweeted it in his words, but the Astros aren't worried about him pitching tomorrow. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 15, 2014 -> 11:17 AM) Will Carroll @injuryexpert 1m Casey Close, Aiken's agent, has sent him to three different top docs who have all cleared his arm to pitch immediately.
