  1. QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Jul 4, 2014 -> 10:35 PM) As I said earlier, currency is currency. If even half of their terrific hitting prospects continue to perform as they should/have been doing, they'll have pieces left over to trade for pitching. Not to mention almost their whole roster will be on league minimum/arb, leaving them to go wild in free agency. Hell, what's to stop them going after Samardzija in 2015 when they're actually ready to contend and now have Addison Russell and co in return for letting him out for a year and a half and getting higher draft picks as a result. That makes sense, just seems risky. How many FA pitchers have you seen completely fail?
  2. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 4, 2014 -> 10:33 PM) Samardzija told them he wanted to test the market, so they knew they had to deal him. Everything I have read says they will start going after major guys like Lester this offseason. I'd rather have Samardzija than Lester
  3. QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Jul 4, 2014 -> 10:23 PM) I'd definitely rather Addison Russell and the other valuable pieces than Samardzija/Hammel on talent-appropriate extensions I understand the value aspect but you have to pitch to win playoff gashes. The Cubs might have one starter, if this is legit from Arrieta. Cubs have money to spend, so maybe overpaying a pitcher you airway have might not be a bad idea.
  4. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jul 4, 2014 -> 10:12 PM) Fantastic deal for Jed and Theo. It is a great return but I think the Cubs would be better off paying Samardzija. When you want to compete you can't keep banking on finding the next Scott Feldman or Jason Hammel.
  5. Was hosting a BBQ, but the one minute of the game I caught was the Abreu homer. Welcome to America!
  6. Can you win a division by winning every game 10 to 7? Theo seems like he wants to try.
  7. QUOTE (TRU @ Jul 3, 2014 -> 02:51 PM) Man there is no proof that the 134 pitches he threw that day led to him being terrible and ultimately finished in the big leagues You are right, there is no proof. Given that he had didn't pitch the entire 2011 and had only reached 100+ pitches 3 times in 2012, I think it's safe to say it sure as hell didn't help his cause. An Edwin Jackson is way more conditioned to handle such a workload than Santana was in 2012.
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 3, 2014 -> 02:50 PM) Chris Kuc ‏@ChrisKuc 1h Source says contract extensions for Jonathan Toews & Patrick Kane not expected to be done until some time after holiday weekend. #Blackhawks They'll be announced July 18 or 19 at the Convention.
  9. QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Jul 3, 2014 -> 02:02 PM) Absolutely. The only exception is when a guy goes into a game with a set pitch count from the get-go, like Sale's first start after the DL. Otherwise, he keeps going. I think Edwin Jackson threw over 150 pitches when he threw a no hitter. Johan Santana disagrees. He pitched a no-hitter on June 1, 2012. He threw 134 pitches after only making 3 starts with 100+ pitchers that year and taking 2011 off. He made 10 more starts in 2012 with an ERA of 8.26 and hasn't appeared in the majors since.
  10. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 3, 2014 -> 11:53 AM) But if girls saw it, they would say "He gone!" and be disinterested. Food for thought "Right size, wrong shape!"
  11. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 3, 2014 -> 10:46 AM) What about an actual abortion? You can say it rhymes with smosmortion
  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 3, 2014 -> 09:27 AM) I think you're seriously overestimating NBA owners/GMs. Are you saying that Brian Cardinal wasn't deserving of a $34 million contract ten years ago? Good point.
  13. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 3, 2014 -> 09:16 AM) Well his better option would be to NOT opt out, no? Yeah, ideally from his financial standpoint he would not have opted out, but then there is zero chance LeBron stays and he is screwed either way. Taking the new deal with Miami is still probably better than what other teams would have offered him given his recent sucktitude.
  14. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 3, 2014 -> 09:05 AM) Apparently Wade and Bosh arent really too keen on the smaller paychecks/longer deals now. I don't think Wade would have had many better options anyway, but Bosh definitely would have.
  15. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 3, 2014 -> 09:02 AM) A newer one that really grates on me is "his hit tool really projects". Who the hell came up with hit tool? It also bothers me when people use the term for a potential draft pick they have never seen play. To me a hit tool would be a bat. I've honestly never heard of the phrase "hit tool", but I already hope I never hear it again.
  16. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 3, 2014 -> 08:00 AM) You tell me...on one hand, Sierra was 4 for his last 11 and has put up an OPS of nearly 800 for the month of June in sporadic playing time. He also had one game-winning, walk off hit earlier in the season. On the other hand, he has 31 K's in 110 at-bats, and is much likelier to hit into a double play. Garcia has an uppercut swing and recently has had a tendency to hit the ball up into the air, fwiw. All those things taken into consideration, it was a very good decision. On paper, Sierra's the better hitter. Then again, someone said they would have preferred Garcia to Beckham because Gordon has been terrible with RISP this season (assuming that means something, when in previous seasons he was good or better than with nobody on, statistical variance/randomness/anomalies, etc.) but I digress. This year, with the Sox, Sierra has 29 GO's and 26 flyouts. Garcia is striking out at a slightly higher clip than Sierra this season, and is twice as likely to hit the ball into the ground as to pop it up, but he's still less likely to hit into a double play because of his speed. Sierra actually had a 579 OPS against RHP and Garcia was barely above 500, although I'm guessing the main reason (in the end) he used Garcia was to avoid the double play and he thought a lefty hitter against a RHP was a better option. So....while there's no clear and compelling reason why his "hunch" work out from a statistical perspective...if Ventura can "go against the grain" and continue to make decisions like this that work out more often than not, and he can do it to the point where you feel it wasn't just blind luck for a fluke, we can start to throw the genius label at him. That is some very solid in-depth analysis on the decision, but you do realize my "genius" comment was full of sarcasm, right?
  17. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 3, 2014 -> 01:22 AM) This wasn't a choice between Beckham and Garcia. It was Sierra and Leury. Any statistician would tell you that Leury makes more contact/strikes out less and has the remoter probability of hitting into a double play. So when Robin makes a good decision, he gets zero credit because it was so obvious. Gotcha.
  18. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jul 2, 2014 -> 10:33 PM) Kaka is still playing? No, not really, he is just enjoying his retirement in the MLS
  19. QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 2, 2014 -> 10:19 PM) Mike Sciosia is clearly an awful manager.... "Awful" may be a strong word, but you will find many people that agree with that comment (sarcastic or not). His WS win was 11 years ago and his teams seem to be consistently underachieving since then.
  20. He just used Leury Garcia as a pinch hitter which resulted in a White Sox Walk-off Winner. Genius.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 2, 2014 -> 12:25 PM) Comcast SportsNet ‏@CSNChicago 30s #Blackhawks agree to terms with D Kyle Cumiskey. Details: http://bit.ly/1lzHm9n #HawksTalk Bowman loves himself some mediocre D depth
  22. Upset city at Wimbeldon Nadal lost yesterday, Murray just lost today The last 4 women left are ranked 3, 6, 13, 23 And how about that Serena breakdown yesterday? That was just weird
  23. I think they key to the US taking the next step is to build some military bases in Brazil and Spain. Let the soldiers frolic amongst the locals, and 20 years from now we should have great "American" soccer players for the 2034 & 2038 World Cups. It has worked so well in Germany with Green, Brooks, Jones & Co.
  24. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 1, 2014 -> 11:03 PM) And you can make arguments for extreme sports, mixed martial arts, NASCAR, golf and tennis. Maybe in terms of overall participation, soccer is higher at the elementary and middle school level, over volleyball and softball, for example (girls). Overall participation may be 3rd or 4th nation wide and MLS attendance is better than many NBA and NHL teams, but TV ratings paint a different picture.
  25. Best comment I saw on Twitter was that the US lost because we brought in Wondo and Belgium was able to bring in Lukaku. The US bust their ass, put up a valiant effort, but they just don't have the talent the top countries do at this point. They haven't reached 2002 success again, but back to back Round of 16s is no small feat. They keep improving IMO and there seems to be some young talent in the pipeline, especially with all the American kids playing in Germany. Plus, it's like the 5th most popular sport in the country and look how well we do. The future is looking up for US soccer.
