Machado signs with Padres 10/300
Fair about the ownership, I'll sway away from that. I just think that in some cases stupid money makes sense. And if there ever is a case, it's the White Sox right now. It's very rare for players of this caliber at this age to hit the free agent market. Given their prospect timeframe and current payroll, the situation will rarely make more sense than now. You can't wait for free agents in the future because they may end up staying put or another desperate team may show up. And the team gets enough revenue that it won't cripple anything financially. The only way it could really hurt the bottom line is if your front office does a poor job, but in that case, you were screwed from day one anyway with the people that were hired.

You seem to be portraying JR as the victim in that case though. He still gets his large revenue sharing check from the league, payroll obligations will be minimal and he will have done it "the right way" business-wise. Profits will still come through. His team has already been ridiculed the last few years, that's not bothersome, his franchise is one of the 5 worst of the last 10 years, that doesn't bother him either. Or at least he's shown no reason to think it bothers him by his team's transactions. "Stupid money" isn't so stupid when it wins you ballgames on the field. The majority of WS winners have a "stupid" contract or two.

I wouldn't go that far. He gets a $50-$70 million check annually just for existing, before any team operations get started. And for ten years the product has been bad, the front office has been criticized and yet they all seem to be doing OK. In fact, better than any of us I would say.

I don't think that's true at all, but maybe we are thinking on different levels of what we consider fandom. But either way, how many of those casual fans even knew that Manny Machado was one of the best players in the league until the hardcore fan told him?

In the same world that Mike Trout is not a household name. Individual baseball players don't have the biggest name recognition with casual sports fans, nowhere near any NFL or NBA players.

MLBPA proposals
They have a point. However, for all the enjoyment people may get out of late inning double switch strategy, that gets ruined by the early inning strategy of intentionally walking the shitty #8 catcher to load the bases so the pitcher can strike out and end the inning. Every NL game I watch the pitcher ruins a good rally. It's mentioned in here earlier, if pitchers could all hit like Carlos Zambrano or better, then maybe they don't need the DH. But at their current skill level, it's a must.

The direct result of the stupid loser point. The 3-2-1 point system can't get here soon enough.

NFL Thread 2019-2020
That Thursday night game against the Vikings was the most I had ever watched him and he made some of the most incredible throws I've seen last year. Then he suddenly lost all ability to play QB successfully. During the Super Bowl, Romo mentioned that the speaker in the QB's helmet turns off with 15 seconds left on the play clock. I had never ever knew that before. The Patriots were showing one defense, then would mix it up at the 15 second mark when McVay could no longer communicate with Goff. Makes you wonder how much if Goff's success is strictly from McVay's game planning.

Indians seemingly have given up on Lindor extension
I agree 100%. If anything, the Twins of the '00s were overachievers, given the composition of their rosters. Look at the talent that has gone through Cleveland and left because of money and without winning a title.

The Indians could have been the best franchise in baseball the last 20-30 years if their owner wasn't the cheapest in the land. Awful.

NFL Thread 2019-2020
Just looking at it from a straight football standpoint, Hunt doesn't make much sense for the Bears in 2019 assuming that he will face at least a 6 game suspension most likely. You aren't gonna keep Hunt, Howard, and Cohen on the roster, and if you trade Howard for Hunt, then you are looking at a minimum 6 games with Benny or Mizzell as your top running back. As much as I love Benny and Nagy loves Mizzell, that's a recipe for disaster.

So it's not just your parents or my parents that send the "FWD: Fwd: Fwd: Re: Fwd:Fwd: Re: [STOP and read this NOW!!!!!]" e-mail chains. Even billionaire's parents do the same thing.

This connects well with our Hall of Fame baseball discussion. In the same season, Julian Edelman served a 4 game PED suspension and won the Super Bowl MVP. Baseball would never ever ever let that happen, he would be black balled. Today it's barely a conversation starter.

Kansas is as dirty as it gets, but it's pretty ridiculous that a kid cant play for two years ago because his "guardian" pocketed $2,500. And the kid came from Africa a few years ago solely for basketball.

Morrisey - If MLB isn’t careful, it will die by its own boring
Teams have used analytics to maximize their chances to win ball games and unfortunately, unlike other sports, those moves make the game more boring, In basketball, shooting more 3's is exciting. In football, spreading the field and running more plays is exciting. In baseball, seeing more pitches, the 3 outcomes, and using more relievers are not exciting, but that helps teams win ball games, so it's not going anywhere.
