I think the reason everyone is still harping on missing out is because it doesn’t bode well for the future. It’s fine to be excited and optimistic about the prospects but if it comes time to go out and get guys to supplement the prospects that have excelled they will likely fail time and time again because of their broken views on free agency. Is it possible to not play there and win it all? Of course but they’re doing this the hard way when they have the resources available to make this process easier. It’s just extraordinarily depressing that they may waste all of these guys just like they wasted Sale and Quintana.

This is absurd. They literally think all of these prospects are going to hit good god. If they are trying to lose all their fans this is definitely the way to do it.

What will probably happen is Harper signs with the Dodgers or Giants. Then we will hear from Rosenthal or Nightengale that the Sox were actually in it until the end and offered a 10 year, 300+ million deal to save face.

Signing him, for however long, is a win just because its a signal to the fan base and the rest of the league that they're willing to spend and make this a much more attractive destination.

Bravo. The thing I can't stand is the fans lining up to defend them. This isn't just about Machado, it's about their systematic approach to FA and how broken and flawed it is. It feels hopeless that they will ever be able to convert on any of their targets moving forward. I keep seeing people clamor about the prospects but these people are "la la laing" the fact that they will be extraordinarily lucky if even 3 or 4 of these guys work out. They'll have to play in free agency if they hope to supplement these guys and they failed miserably and sounds like they didn't learn a damn thing through the process.

It's well known those are the guys the Sox talk to when they want stuff out there so its not that crazy.

Still wouldn't go to the Phillies with the other moves they've made. The "stupid money" quote was dumb but even without Manny and Harper they would still have had a pretty damn successful offseason.

FWIW Dave says here that the Sox are pissed off and operating in stealth mode on this. They've stayed in touch but thats about it.

Probably because the Sox got ahead of it and had Bob say they're out. I'm sure the past few Heyman tweets are from Boras camp hinting that the Sox are on the fringe and could come back if the Phillies don't pony up.
