Signing a pitcher for longer than 4 years will be a big test to see if they've learned anything from the last few years. They are in a position where they have to bend to the market and take a risk. No more self-imposed caps on years or money. None of this "Players wants to play for the White Sox" bullshit.

Would certainly be weird if the Sox ended up signing Hamels and Castellanos.

We said that last year when the Padres popped up in the Machado derby. If there are other teams getting involved in this the Sox have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable and give out deals that add some risk in terms of money or years. That is, If they're serious about this whole competing thing.

Also if the market is as good as Grandal claims it is then Wheeler stands to gain by waiting rather than just outright signing. Unless the Sox are offering well and above what other teams are offering it doesn't really make sense to sign right now,

Eh I don't put too much stock into things like that. Not all reporters get the same info. Not saying I think Wheeler is signing today because of that, I just don't think its indicative of anything.

I remember last offseason when the guy from 670 got intel and was adamant that Manny was signing with the Sox on a specific date. I don't believe any of this stuff anymore until an actual reporter says a deal is close or completed.
