White Sox sign Adam LaRoche
QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Nov 22, 2014 -> 12:44 AM) that is true hi8is lol when i read that. hopefully laroche won't be historically bad. this signing could go a lot of ways. it probably won't go that way. It's hard to envision LaRoche being Adam Dunn part 2. He's not the same type of hitter. Yes, he's left handed. Yes, he hits for some power. Yes, they're both named Adam. But LaRoche is not a 3 true outcomes guy like Dunn is. LaRoche's career K% is right around the ML average at 21%. Dunn's is at 29%. LaRoche is a career .264 hitter with a 10.3 BB%, Dunn a .237 hitter with a 15.8 BB%. Dunn has a career .253 ISO, LaRoche is at .208. LaRoche will actually hit singles and doubles and not strike out 200 times a year. The age thing is a bit troubling since he's 35 starting next year, but he finished off 2014 strong after a horrible July. As long as the talent stays there (I think it should, especially if we rest him as a DH a good amount of the time), he should be a fairly productive left handed bat for us. Something we've been missing since Dunn's one and only good year in 2012.

FYI, Madden, FIFA, and NBA 2K15 are all $30 at Walmart this weekend. So if you wanted to pick one of those up at half-price, now's the time. It's better than going during Black Friday.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 02:03 PM) Jon Morosi @jonmorosi 2m2 minutes ago Sources: #Rays have made Matt Joyce available on trade market and have had some talks with other clubs. He is comparable to Jay Bruce. I like Joyce. Unfortunately, he can't hit lefties at all. The Rays used him in a platoon most of the time. He would make a nice platoon partner for Viciedo. Unfortunately, Dayan actually hit worse against lefties last year somehow.

White Sox sign Adam LaRoche
QUOTE (raBBit @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 09:38 PM) This is interesting. This should mean he gets a therapeutic exemption and should be allowed to use adderall or another amphetamine-based stimulant. So basically when other players are wearing down in September, LaRoche is going to dropping speed, getting fired up and having locked in focus. I think his numbers late in the year are actually pretty good... I decided to look them up and I think you may be on to something. Career in August: .377 wOBA Career in September/October: .373 wOBA Career in first half: .334 wOBA Career in second half: .366 wOBA So yeah...he's gonna be good down the stretch. This also means don't freak out when he doesn't produce that well in April.

White Sox sign Adam LaRoche
QUOTE (raBBit @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 09:21 PM) He should be good for ~25/~80 with an OPS around .800. That's something no other player besides Abreu could do in the last two years. Supposedly was a big part of the clubhouse in Washington and he handled Zimmerman taking his spot amicably. What's kinda funny is that I wanted him on the Sox 4 years ago when we were looking for our Thome replacement. Then we signed Dunn and the Nationals signed LaRoche. They got way more out of LaRoche than we got out of Dunn.

ESPN Suspends Keith Law from Twitter
lmao how does Schilling (isn't he still employed by ESPN?) not get in trouble, but Law does? Schilling was the one who posted about evolution in the first place.

White Sox sign Adam LaRoche
I'd rather have LaRoche than Butler, especially on a 2 year deal. LaRoche actually walked quite a bit last year and he would have been a 2 WAR player had he played 150-160 games.

Jay Bruce
I like Bruce, but there's no way in hell I'd trade Quintana for him, let alone Quintana plus other assets.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 01:47 AM) He's basically coming for nothing. Again 8-10 million is nothing today. Sox could have had a 28 year old guy who knows how to hit for NOTHING. What the hell did they pay Keppinger? Since the Sox can't compete for highly priced free agents, he would have been a perfect gamble. He's only 28. We've had slow as molasses type guys before. I think he would have looked great in our lineup if we are serious about ever winning again. WHo the hell are the Sox going to sign? They can't afford anybody hardly. Beane is an EXPERT. He is the Sabes god and he wanted Butler. I think this is sad the Sox obviously had zero interest. I really truly don't think Butler is gonna stop hitting at 28. Cell is perfect park for him. lmao. First Billy Beane is not a god. Second, just because he did something doesn't mean it's going to be widely praised because he's Billy Beane. Sabermetricians don't worship people like gods, that's the exact opposite of what sabermetrics is.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 07:29 AM) For all of you Bears fan that wanted someone like Andy Reid earlier in the year, I hope this makes you realize that the grass is not always greener. He's such a horrendous game manager. He refused to let Alex Smith throw the ball until midway through the 3rd quarter and guess what happened? 2 straight scoring drives. He also didn't even let his best player touch the ball on their last drives so that was obviously a smart decision. It's so frustrating wondering how this team could play if they had someone competent calling plays for them. Andy Reid is so infuriating at times. As a Charles owner who watches a lot of Chiefs games, some of the calls just make no sense. He'll draw up some great plays like that 4th and inches call against the Bills two weeks ago, then he'll have games like last night and the SF game where he just refuses to let Charles touch the ball down the stretch.

QUOTE (Jake @ Nov 21, 2014 -> 12:04 AM) Jimmy averaged 13 points on 39% shooting last year. This year, he has scored at least 14 points in every game and has had only one game in which he shot below 44%. He's gonna get paid. I'm happy for him.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 20, 2014 -> 10:55 PM) I think the Sox blew it not getting involved with Billy Butler. He's cheap in today's standards and a genius like Beane was willing to go three years. He'd have been potentially dandy in the hitter-friendly Cell. I'm not saying Billy is a god, but it's the Sox type of signing. Taking a chance on a guy who had a bad year. He's only 28. He could have possibly gone on a nice six-year run on the South Side. He finally elevates a bit and we might have had a good DH. Also would have been nice to have him in 19 games a year vs. KC. Now I could be wrong if Billy gets fat and continues to not elevate, but I think if the Sox are gonna continue to be a small market team like they have been payroll wise, this signing made a lot of sense. Go after the 8-10 million buck a year guys. I'd say this is a fail by Hahn. Cause he's not going to get any of the mega contract type guys. p.s. I'm in favor of acquiring Torii Hunter now. Yes he's old, but same reasoning as Butler. Figure you can get him 6-10 million a year for two years or one year and an option year. A lot of guys like Butler start regressing at 29-30. It was a big gamble to give him 3 years, especially after the year he had. Beane's getting quite a bit of backlash for the signing. It's just not very smart. They also have 3-4 guys on that team who can DH and play 1B. Oakland's also a much worse hitter's park than KC. It just didn't make a ton of sense.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 20, 2014 -> 10:50 PM) That Raiders sack celebration was the most Raiders thing ever. They're lucky the coaching staff was quick enough to call that timeout. That would have been a free play that would have resulted in a big gain.

White Sox have checked in on Adam LaRoche
QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Nov 19, 2014 -> 10:07 PM) Let the Marlins have him. In the NL? He'll be a negative WAR player. Awful deal for the Marlines, might as well have thrown 30 million at Butler if that's what LaRoche gets. Last I checked, the Nationals are in the NL. I doubt LaRoche will go from a 1.5 WAR player to a negative WAR player that quickly.

QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 17, 2014 -> 04:05 PM) I would take Stafford/Newton anyday. Stafford has games where he absolutely does not show up, just like Cutler. In reality, he's only had one good year back when he threw for over 5000 yards. His other years have been the definition of mediocre.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 17, 2014 -> 01:11 PM) People need to stop talking in absolutes in regards to Jay and whether the guy can win. The Bears played in a Conference Championship game a few years back, which, last time I checked, is considered "winning." If you are defining "winning" as winning the Super Bowl, there is nothing you can say to me to convince me that the Bears had no chance of winning that game and ultimately making the Super Bowl. The Bears have also been on the cusp of making the playoffs in other seasons with Cutler. Is Cutler the best quarterback in the NFL? No. Is he in the top 10? Probably not. However, can a team "win" with Jay Cutler? Absolutely, and to say otherwise is simply contradictory to recent history. For real. Jenks treats Cutler like he's worthless. His last response to my post more or less proved that. The truth is that he's a mediocre to decent QB who can't win you games single-handedly like Rodgers or Manning. But he's also better than the majority of QBs in the NFL.
