Rivers is the ultimate choke artist.

How much are you willing to offer Josh Hamilton?
Hamilton's bad news. Do not want.

So what type of 3rd baseman do we need?
Here's an idea: trade for Yunel Escobar (you can probably get him for real cheap) and play him at 3B. Yeah, I know he's had clubhouse issues before, but the guy's always been healthy and when right, he's a .300/.360/.440 type of player. Exactly what you want in the 2-hole.

**2012 Election Day thread**
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 7, 2012 -> 12:29 PM) They really aren't. Baseball advanced statistics really aren't of a predictive nature. They are of a resulting nature. They are as a result of actions that have already happen. Election prediction is WAY different. They really aren't related. One of the main points of statistics is to use past performance to predict future performance (i.e. rid variables of dependencies, which will then give you predictive results). Advanced statistics/projections in elections and baseball use this. xFIP or even plain old FIP are often used as predictors, even though they are completely based off of a pitcher's performance in the current or previous years. It's a fundamental aspect of statistics. Sure, you can argue the two things aren't even close to the same thing in actuality (of course not). But in the most fundamental aspect, there are numerous similarities.

QUOTE (Jake @ Nov 7, 2012 -> 11:32 AM) Sabermetrics came into a sport that was already ruled by statistics...it was a good, good thing but there was still only so much that can be done. Silver popularized statistical analysis of polling numbers in an arena that liked numbers as much as a grade schooler likes math class. Silver in politics is like introducing batting average to baseball fans. I'd say that poll numbers = batting average. Nate Silver's predictions = WAR. WAR adjusts for position, playing time, the league average, replacement level, which is a lot more similar to Silver did than simple stats like batting average, which adjusts for nothing.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 7, 2012 -> 11:25 AM) Unless baseball is a popular vote contest, I don't get the connection between the two. There are almost more factors that go into an election than there are in a game of baseball, or hell even a 162 game season of baseball.

I find it funny that millions love Silver's predictions based on biased data (polls). But many of those same people would rather gouge their eyes out than agree that sabermetrics in baseball are valid. Yes, it's not like it was 4-5 years ago, when the likes of Buster Olney and Jon Heyman would make sabermetrics seem nerdy and irrelevant (those two now use it...), but the point remains. FanGraphs had an article on this today: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/n...rfect-modeling/

QUOTE (Reddy @ Nov 7, 2012 -> 08:02 AM) how's it feel to waste your vote? FWIW, I really liked Gary Johnson's platform and I've always favored democrats.

I know one thing Nate Silver created and sucks today: PECOTA.

Drafting McCoy was a mistake. The Eagles are too f***ing stupid to get him any redzone touches.

The Eagles find every way to lose the ball in the red zone. McCoy could have had 2-3 TDs today, but Vick loves to f*** the Eagles over.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Nov 4, 2012 -> 08:20 PM) My god, I can not stand Collinsworth and his absolutism and hyperbole. Everything he sees is the most amazing thing, every player is the greatest he's ever seen at something, it's so damn annoying. Sounds like John Gruden.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Nov 4, 2012 -> 07:57 PM) My god, if Tony Romo wasn't the Cowboys QB, the guy in his spot would probably be sacked 5-7 times a game. That guy is always forced to run around in the pocket with that terrible O-line. Yeah...b**** about an o-line to a bunch of Bears fans. We have no sympathy for you at all.

QUOTE (Brian @ Nov 4, 2012 -> 07:32 PM) LoL at Tony Gonzalez intro LoL looks like a ref putting up his arms and making the touchdown sign, as does lol. It's off topic, but I just wanted to point that out.

Windows 8
QUOTE (Swingandalongonetoleft @ Nov 4, 2012 -> 05:03 PM) Going to have to get a new desktop for work, so I'll get to try it out sometime this week. I was really surprised that cell phone-wise, they're retiring WP7 in favor of WP8 so soon. WP7 users won't be able to upgrade, either. WP7 isn't/wasn't exactly popular in a world where it's either Android or iOS, but it is/was a damn good OS. Same goes for Window 6.5. WP7 wasn't a finished OS. No SMP support, low screen resolutions. It had the makings of a mobile OS from 3 years ago. WP8 is a big improvement in the hardware department.

So what type of 3rd baseman do we need?
QUOTE (Jake @ Nov 4, 2012 -> 03:53 PM) WHAT? Beckham has struggled to be a positive value player. Moustakas, in his first full season, put up a 3 WAR and saw his OPS rise from the year previous. He's now 24 and there's no reason to think he should decline or do anything but get better. He's an extremely valuable player. If Moustakas had a .600 OPS last year, he'd be more like Beckham...but he's not. TBH, the two weren't all that different offensively. Gordon was probably a Mike Trout HR rob away from putting up the same wOBA as Moustakas.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Nov 3, 2012 -> 04:35 PM) Man.. Matthew Stafford (Jacksonville D) or Matt Ryan? (Dallas D) I was gonna roll with Stafford, but Ryan has had a great year. How do you have both?
-
Can the Sox fix the bullpen?
The bullpen clearly wasn't the biggest issue last year. Yeah, Matt Thornton lost 10 games, bad luck hits sometimes. Just like how good luck hits and you vulture 8 wins like Nate Jones.

Cubs- Angels Trade - failed
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 3, 2012 -> 11:31 AM) It's the Dempster trade fiasco all over again. Good work Theo. Angels bought out Haren, he is now a free agent. I don't know why you'd ever trade with the Cubs now. That's two botched deals in the past 4 months.

2012 Video Game Thread
QUOTE (danman31 @ Nov 3, 2012 -> 01:04 AM) Haven't played Liberation yet, but the Vita itself is an impressive device. It's surprisingly light and when I was killing time in a Panera today I noticed that I actually found it better to browse on the web that my iphone because of the bigger touch screen and similar interface. Vita = boring. Maybe Black Ops 2 and AC Liberation will make it less boring, but the game selection is awful.

Cubs- Angels Trade - failed
I don't even know what to think of this trade. It's one team's garbage for another team's garbage...except one team's garbage has a guaranteed contract.
