  1. QUOTE (Middle Buffalo @ Feb 17, 2011 -> 08:08 AM) You would have been great at the Salem witch trials. I remember hearing that to decide whether you were a witch or not they threw you into a river or lake. If you floated, you were a witch and were killed. If you drowned, you weren't.
  2. Probably should've used this one yesterday but there's a 12 on it too.
  3. My wife kept seeing the commercials for ancestary.com and finally got curious enough to actually check it out. She started entering information for both her and my family and most of them show that there is more information available. Problem is that you have to pay to see the info. So we’ve gone to local library the past 2 weekends to see what we could dig up ourselves. We’ve gotten back to our great-grandparents who were born in the late 1800’s so far. It’s pretty interesting considering I’ve never really had any idea where my ancestors came from. So far they are all pretty much Midwestern farmers.
  4. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Feb 15, 2011 -> 09:13 AM) What credit card debt really is, without putting it nicely, is modern day slavery. The interest rates are high enough (immorally high, IMO) that they know you will never pay it off, and will essentially be on the hook paying them for the rest of your life. The top 5% that pay off 100% of their debt and the bottom 5% that default are easily canceled out by the middle 90% that get by with minimum payments and an ever growing balance. We put nearly all of our purchases on 1 or 2 credit cards and then pay the balance off every month. The biggest reason is for the cashback bonus we get. So essentially we are getting paid to use our credit card. We haven't paid in interest/late fees in years.
  5. I think I would classify myself as solidly in the middle class. Our house is a little less than 1000 square feet. We have 5 TVs but only one is a flat-screen and 2 of them were given to us for free. One of them is at least 20 years old and doesn’t even use a remote. We have 2 desktop computers but only 1 is actually connected to the internet. The other is 5+ years old and still runs on XP. We have a family plan with 4 cell phones but we got 2 of them for free and none of them connect to the web. All we can do is talk or text. We have basic cable and don’t subscribe to Netflix or anything like that. We only have 1 everyday car that is 8 years old with 120,000 miles on it. It was paid off but we had to take a loan out on it again when the engine blew last year. Our one “luxury” is our pop-up trailer and 1993 Suburban to tow it. Both are paid off though. We also have 2 dogs and 3 cats so we have to add pet food, treats and cat litter into our grocery bill. We could be a one-income family because I basically make enough myself to pay our regular bills but we are still trying to catch up from my wife being unemployed for about 9 months a few years ago and me being unemployed for 5 months just last year. I also believe I was quite underpaid for several years prior. We figure we’ll finally catch up on everything including most outstanding debt and repairs in about 3 years. Of course that’s also about the time my oldest daughter will be graduating HS/moving out/heading to college. We’ll finally be able to afford the bigger/better things that we needed when the kids were younger.
  6. I voted for the second one. I like meat. If I had to learn how to hunt, kill and skin my own animals to get it, I guess I'd do that. Luckily there are other people on the planet that are better at it that are paid to do it for me.
  7. QUOTE (hawksox13 @ Feb 11, 2011 -> 11:07 AM) On the first day of tickets being available to the public I always try to get Sox vs. Cubs tickets. In the past I've only been successful one time. Today, however, was a very different story. I was able to get four tickets to each of the Cubs at Sox games from June 20-22. I'm trying to figure out what the difference is from past years to this year. Just an overall lower demand? Poor advertising about tickets going on sale today? The fact that the games are on weekdays? Just lucky this time around? They may still have some tickets available, so if you haven't got them yet, go on over to Ticketmaster. ^^^That. IMHO at least.
  8. QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Feb 11, 2011 -> 10:21 AM) Call me an a-hole but if I'm the coach and I know the pitcher can't field his position, I'll take advantage of it...isn't that smart ball?Exploit the opponent's weakness... I think at this level there's a fine line between teaching the kids how to play the game and building up their skills and playing simply to win.
  9. QUOTE (Brian @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 06:41 PM) Last Thursday, I went to the gas station to fill up and got a cheap car wash just to get the salt off. Car Wash was an addition $5. After filling up, I drove around to the wash and it was closed down temporarily. No biggie, my recipt said I had a week to use it. So every day I drove by it and it was still blocked off. Today was my last chance to use it so when I went it was still blocked off. I took my receipt inside and was calm and just asked if I could put the $5 towards gas or some soda or whatever and I was told I could not do that. I explained that I bought the wash a week ago and it expires today and the guy said I purchased the car wash at my own risk and there was nothing I could do. I even said there was no sign saying that but he didn't budge. I didn't make a big deal out of it, it is only $5 but still. WTF Keep the receipt and try the code when the wash does open back up. Most places I've gone to they are good for 6 months or so. Either that or go back and complain more. They should be able to refund car washes. I've seen it happen plenty of times when somebody "accidentally" purchases one.
  10. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 11:55 PM) Unless we can grow our own steaks or broccoli florets in lab conditions without causing anyone or anything pain or death, this is just a pipedream. Actually, they have already started doing this with meat. I just read an article about it a few weeks ago. It's not FDA approved yet and getting people to get past the it's not "real" meat thinking might be difficult.
  11. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 11:40 PM) My rationale is that when I buy something at the store, the animal was already dead. There was nothing I could really do to stop that animal from being killed. Yes I understand that if I stop eating meat I may impact the demand for meat therefore ultimately stopping the killing of animals for food. But inevitably I wont be able to do it This sounds like the reasoning a lot of people use for not voting. I’m not going to swing the decision one way or the other with my single vote so why bother. Yet many people say that’s not a good enough reason. Just saying…
  12. QUOTE (Middle Buffalo @ Feb 10, 2011 -> 11:19 AM) Just came back from the grocery store. I saw a lady in the parking lot in pajamas and slippers coming out of the store. I don't care who's doing it. It's a bad look. Is that really the image you want to project? Check out peopleofwalmart.com and you'll see much worse.
  13. No more Guitar Hero. I remember when it was the "must have" thing for everyone. We got GH3 on Black Friday one year and waited in the checkout line for like 5 hours. The stores registers had crashed. I got my kids the GH World Tour a couple of years ago for Christmas. They still play it every so often when they have friends over but it sits in the box more often than not.
  14. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Feb 9, 2011 -> 08:04 AM) Isn't it the same thing just different labeling? I don't get the excitement... I can taste the difference in the throwback Mt. Dew. The Coke and Pepsi made with sugar taste almost the same as the HFCS versions to me.
  15. QUOTE (soxsider11 @ Feb 8, 2011 -> 10:04 PM) Interesting question my roomate just asked me. Would you John Danks for Strasburg? If I ever meet Strasburg and he asks me to John Danks for him, I'd probably say yes. Then I'd ask him "How the hell do I John Danks?"
  16. QUOTE (PeavyTime @ Feb 8, 2011 -> 09:56 AM) This isn't flyingsock You started the thread by complaining about something done by a WSI poster.

    Coffee Talk

QUOTE (Tex @ Feb 7, 2011 -> 07:17 PM) They may be trying a little self medication for ADD or ADHD. Many people report it helping. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Does_caffeine_treat_ADHD I can't imagine giving caffeine to somebody that is already hyperactive and can't sit down or focus on something for very long.
  18. QUOTE (buhbuhburrrrlz @ Feb 8, 2011 -> 01:44 AM) saw that yesterday. the statue still seems to have a large crack in the base? wtf I read that they did that themselves when they moved the statue.
  19. QUOTE (lostfan @ Feb 7, 2011 -> 02:05 PM) I think they've re-released a couple times and Pepsi said they'd keep making it indefinitely. First time I've seen it at my grocery store though. http://consumerist.com/2010/10/pepsi-throw...ay-for-now.html I think it's just a matter of whether Pepsi was distributing to where you shopped. I love this s*** and if they make it permanently it's all I'll ever buy. I know it was here a couple of years ago when they first brought it out and it was a "limited-time only" thing. Then it disappeared for a little while and came back again sometime last year I think. We've had it ever since. I had heard that they were going to make it permanent if it sold well enough.
  20. QUOTE (lostfan @ Feb 7, 2011 -> 01:37 PM) Pepsi throwback is back! f*** YES! It never left here.

    Coffee Talk

I actually saw a little kid (7 or 8ish?) drinking coffee yesterday. Kinda surprised me. My kids have had small sips of their grandparent's coffee here and there but that's about it. Most everyone I know didn't start drinking it until high school at the earliest.
  22. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Feb 5, 2011 -> 09:56 PM) Just looked it up, Omar has 2,799 hits. Chances he plays long enough to reach 3,000? My gu says no, but it also says that he defies age like no one not named Julio Franco. This is funny because I just watched Mr. 3000 the other day. I also told my friend about how John Kruk retired. He didn't believe me. In fact, he never even knew Kruk played for the Sox.
  23. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Feb 7, 2011 -> 09:22 AM) I think what this country needs is more movies based on comic books. There seems to be a lot of talk about making or remaking Stephen King movies lately. I've heard talk about The Dark Tower Series, Pet Semetary, The Stand and Firestarter.
