QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Nov 22, 2005 -> 04:24 PM) My parents bought their first house in the area for $35K They sold it 15 years ago for 150K We saw it sell again last year for almost 250K I guess it's possible but you'd have to stay a really long time. I forget that I live by the city that has what is considred the "most affordable housing in the country".

QUOTE(Mercy! @ Nov 22, 2005 -> 02:50 PM) I wanted to give you some examples, but realized that so many of my “first house purchase” stories were not of the “good” variety, and didn’t want to rain on your parade. I’m happy that you are excited about your first home. It’s a great feeling, isn’t it? What I’ll always remember is the rush of good feeling I got when I went to the new (actually, real old) house after closing, got out the key, unlocked the front door for the first time, and we walked inside OUR home. Well, one good story – I stayed a long time there. When I moved, I sold it for more than 10 times the purchase price. 10 times the purchase price? My parents have been in their house for 20 years and the value has probably doubled. Maybe a little bit more. That's like buying a house for $60,000 and selling it for $650,000...

QUOTE(Art Vandelay @ Nov 22, 2005 -> 04:13 PM) Turkey is my favorite. White meat, dark meat. I really don't care. It's all good. Crap, now I have the Thanksgiving Song by Adam Sandler stuck in my head...

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Nov 22, 2005 -> 11:59 AM) That was the sole reason I was going to buy one. I never got around to doing it though and now I'm kicking myself. I did make a good deal when I sold my PS2 upon release way back when. I always miss out on opportunities like this. I'm usually the one paying for the stuff rather than making money. I'm jealous of the people that are lucky enough to get a high-demand item and then make a huge profit on it. I actually have to work for my money...

These things are now on Ebay for upwards of $2,000+

Never, ever buy a house that is is rental property when you buy it. The people in the house basically don't give a crap what it looks like when they (eventually)leave... I also learned all about squatters rights...

I found one at Sears of all places. Of course this is in Rockford... Check places like Kohl's, JC Penny, etc... They usually have stuff like that.

QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Nov 21, 2005 -> 02:20 PM) Well they can obviously edit it out the time b/w pitching changes, unneccessary interviews etc. Those are just the game times from the box scores on MLB.com You're right though. Take out commercials and you can probably cut a good half-hour off.

This is totally off topic but can somebody explain the phrase in the thread title? I've heard "when it rains it pours" but never that one. I remember hearing this same thing in 'Gone In 60 Seconds' but I thought it was because the guy was foreign and didn't quite get it right.

QUOTE(Rex Kickass @ Nov 22, 2005 -> 09:43 AM) So that's why you ran into my apartment and threw my Christmas Tree out the window and broke my Santa Claus gnome? I think she did it because of the unwritten rule that Chrismas decorations (especially trees) are not allowed to be put up until the weekend after Thanksgiving at the earliest. Thanksgiving is becoming a forgotten holiday... -

QUOTE(Mercy! @ Nov 18, 2005 -> 12:40 PM) “Latifa M”?? If that had been my girl Queen Latifa, is there a shed of doubt who would have left with that cell phone? Miss Thing would have gone straight from the ladies room to the operating room. and then Queen Latifa would have gone from the ladies room to the courtroom for assault charges...

QUOTE(YASNY @ Nov 18, 2005 -> 10:11 AM) Rake leaves. Shovel snow. Mow lawns. All the other stuff that people do that they wish they didn't have to. That'd be my guess. Oh. The stuff that you can pay the kid next door $5 to do for you.

QUOTE(Steff @ Nov 18, 2005 -> 09:52 AM) Putting up Christmas lights & going to the circus Saturday night, and the Bears game on Sunday. I just heard a radio commercial yesterday where there's a company that will come to your house and put up Christmas lights for you. I had to sit and think about that one for a minute. On one hand it's one of those "why didn't I think of that" ideas. On the other hand, what do they do the other 10 months of the year???

Is everyone missing the obvious? US Cellular has a really nice jumbotron and for a fee they'll put anything you want on it. Just make sure she's not eating a candy bar at the time...

QUOTE(Steff @ Nov 17, 2005 -> 04:09 PM) Calif. Workers Share Mega Millions Jackpot Thursday, November 17, 2005 ANAHEIM, Calif. — A secretary and six laboratory workers at Kaiser Permanente held the winning ticket for the $315 million Mega Millions jackpot — but they still came into work, a company spokeswoman said. The jackpot was the third-richest prize won with a single ticket in the history of lotteries in the United States. The winners, who each chipped in $3 for the ticket, came into work Wednesday at the medical center in Garden Grove anyway, said Kaiser spokeswoman Barbara Shipnuck. "They bought the entire staff lunch to celebrate," Shipnuck said. "For now, they all prefer to stay anonymous." The ticket was bought at Rainbow Water, Juice, Flower & Gift, not far from Disneyland, where the owners will receive $1 million. Owners Guadalupe and Jose Cordova, both 53, were considering selling the store a couple of years ago but changed their minds, said their daughter, Raquel Cordova. "My mom's like, 'No, no, someday I'll hit it big and I'll be able to retire,'" Raquel Cordova said. The couple, who immigrated to the United States from Mexico as teenagers, decided to take Wednesday off and let their kids work. "Mom's gonna take a long vacation ... she's here seven days a week, even on Sundays," Raquel Cordova said. Last month in Oregon, a family claimed the largest jackpot in U.S. lottery history won by a single ticket, $340 million. The numbers were drawn Oct. 19 in the other big multistate lottery, Powerball. Until then, the richest undivided lottery jackpot in U.S. history was the $314.9 million Powerball jackpot won by a West Virginia man on Christmas Day 2002. In addition to California, Mega Millions is played in Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Texas, Virginia and Washington. My wife just joked last night that we should buy a ticket for that. Does anyone from Illinois ever win that thing?
