  1. The counter-argument is that they are spending all their money on scouting and obtaining minor league players. The thing is that they need to hit on almost ALL of them for the team to be any good. I’m not sure how much longer the fans will continue to wait.
  2. I agree with the LOTR books being very difficult to read. I saw the movies before I read the books and really liked them. But it took me a long time to really get into the books. When I first started I would pick it up, read a page or two and then put it back down again. Normally I’m a pretty fast reader and will go through multiple chapters in one sitting. As for all the singing, I mostly just skipped over it.
  3. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 10:41 AM) Quite possibly the worst construction project ive ever seen, its right up there with Wacker Drive. The difference here is that its SOOOOO Long, its taking SOOOO Long and it always appears that they are doing no work. I think (hope) it will be worth it in the end. It’ll be nice having that extra lane the entire way. Driving it everyday, I can tell that they’ve actually done quite a bit of work. There were a number of overpasses that they had to tear down and rebuild that they finished surprisingly quick.
  4. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 10, 2014 -> 09:54 AM) The 90 construction ends in 2016.
  5. I’ve read the comments from medical people under a few of these stories that say they witnessed people being maintained on life support for years and sometimes decades. They talked about the people basically withering away with bed sores and multiple infections. The families just stop coming to visit after a while because it’s too difficult. Basically the person being kept alive has no quality of life anymore. So I guess I agree that the family should let the girl go but for different reasons.
  6. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 03:40 PM) Hearts in Atlantis was a weird choice to film, it's part of the larger Dark Towet story. So it doesn't really make sense because it is not really put into context. That said, I like the movie Stripping out all the DT connections is why I didn’t like it. I also hated how they changed the ending. The book is one of my absolute favorites and I thought King’s ending was one of his better ones. That’s something he tends to have trouble with IMHO.
  7. QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 03:25 PM) I enjoyed all three of Joe Hill's books. I liked NOS4A2 the best. There's no doubt, after reading that one, that he is Stephen King's son. By the way, Horns is being made into a movie, and I think it's due to come out in the fall. I know that it was shown at the Toronto International Film Festival but I haven’t read anything about a US release date yet.
  8. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 12:36 PM) Well, I think just about any interstate that carries as much truck traffic as 65 is already 3+ lanes in each direction, and when an interstate has 3+ lanes in each direction, semi trucks are not allowed in the left lane (at least that's the law in every state that I'm aware of). So it's more of a problem on 65 than anywhere else. It happens on the I-90 tollway between Elgin and Rockford. They just finally got around to starting construction to add a 3rd lane last summer. They might finally finish it sometime next year. When the weather was decent there were signs saying the trucks should drive in the left lane. Now since the construction is on hold for the winter the trucks just drive in both lanes for no reason at all.
  9. I got handful of books for Christmas. So far I’m about half-way through Horns by Joe Hill (Stephen King’s oldest son). It’s about a dude that wakes up one day with horns growing out of his head and some really strange powers to go with them. He was accused of murdering his GF a year prior but never formally charged. So now he’s finding out who the real killer was/is. Stephen definitely passed down some writing talent to his son. There are a couple of times in the book where suddenly I’m am reading a flashback with no warning but so far it’s pretty good. I just finished up Dr. Sleep which is the sequel to The Shining. I really enjoyed it and actually liked it better than The Shining. I ended up re-reading The Shining right afterword and picked up on a number references to it in Dr. Sleep that I had missed because it had been so long since I first read it. Next on my to-read list are Heart-Shaped Box, NOS4A2, and the Frankenstein series by Dean Koontz. I read the original Frankenstein book over the summer and then the first DK Frankenstein book a couple of months ago. The basic premise is that both Dr. Frankenstein and his monster are still alive in modern times. The Dr. is attempting to create a superior race of humans and his original creation wants to stop him.
  10. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 09:34 AM) Books are always better IMO. Movies always fall short because they miss so much detail. I pretty much agree with this. But I also think that a book like The Stand could be made into a decent movie. Sure it's 1000+ pages but so much of it is internal dialog and scene setting.
  11. Most of the movies I've seen that were based on a book that I've actually read have been Stephen King books. Best: Shawshank Redemption, Stand By Me, The Mist, The Green Mile Worst: Hearts In Atlantis, The Dead Zone, Bag of Bones, The Running Man, Tommyknockers, Dreamcatcher
  12. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 9, 2014 -> 08:58 AM) They need to quit f***ing around and put a Hobbit/LoTR sized budget behind The Dark Tower. No other Stephen King Property needs to be touched until that one is conquered It would be more of a Harry Potter type project with 7 books (8 if you include The Wind Through the Keyhole). The biggest problem is that they really have to sign on for the whole thing all at once and if the first movie doesn’t do well, it would crash and burn quick. I’m not sure how much of a following the DT really has. There are people that have read almost everything by SK except the DT books.
  13. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jan 6, 2014 -> 09:55 PM) Ok, that makes more sense now. Although even the angle in which she is taking the camera makes it hard for me to think he was actually in her background. The way I understood it, there was a group of people watching the dude on the bridge and the chick decided that she wanted a selfie with the jumper in the background. Kind of an obnoxious thing to do. Like taking a selfie with a car accident in the background.
  14. Along these same lines, I recently read about a woman in Texas (I think?) that was in an accident and is being kept alive by machines. The twist is that she is pregnant. Her husband said that she didn’t want to be kept alive but they didn’t have anything in writing. Because she is pregnant, they can’t/won’t pull the plug. Edit: Link
  15. I read this morning that the hospital turned the girl over to the coroner (sp?) who then turned her over to the family. She has a death certificate filled out but they can’t put down the cause yet.
  16. QUOTE (scs787 @ Jan 6, 2014 -> 01:01 PM) Sigh, my car won't start. Gas gauge is just a bit lower than half a tank. Single car house, ghetto neighborhood where I don't know anyone around so I can't really jump it. Will the problem fix itself as it gets "warmer" or will it no doubt need to be jumped at some point? Add a gallon of gas??? Any other tips? Fwiw, it might be worthwhile to get one of those jump starter booster packs. That way you don’t have to rely on someone else to jump your car.
  17. QUOTE (scs787 @ Jan 6, 2014 -> 01:12 PM) It tries to start, doesn't click. It's kind of a slow drawn out attempt at starting How old is your battery?
  18. The cold hasn’t really affected me much at all today. My car started up with no problem and there was 0 chance of my work closing. The streets were pretty empty so I had a nice, easy commute in. I’ll take cold 10 times out of 10 over shoveling any amount of snow.
  19. I thought about all these posts about the dogs in the snow as I was reading my facebook wall. A couple of people posted something about providing shelter for your pets from the cold/snow. The funny part was the picture attached showed a pure white dog laying in the snow. It looked an awful lot like a husky, which are pretty much built to spend a lot of time in cold/snow.
  20. I just joined the world of GTA 5 online. PSN is iwritecode.
  21. QUOTE (Alpha Dog @ Dec 29, 2013 -> 12:32 AM) If you are to believe that family, that bystander should have just walked on and ignored the fact that an innocent clerk had a gun to his head by a robber, simply because it wasn't at HIS head. And I am sure there are more than a few posters here that agree with that sentiment. I’d be surprised if anyone here did agree with that.
  22. I didn't realize until just now how long it's been since I've watched a new movie. I've only seen 2 movies from this year and they both came out in January.
  23. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Dec 23, 2013 -> 12:56 PM) Ugh...weekends. What are those? I've had Tue/Wed as my off days for a few months now. It's the nature of working in TV. Today is the first of eight consecutive work days. Hooray! I’m still getting my normal Sat/Sun off as well. Which is what really sucks. Get 2 days off, work 1, get 2 more off, work 2, get two more off… It’s so much better to get time off on consecutive days.
  24. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Dec 20, 2013 -> 05:49 PM) You do too. We all do. We've had over 500 people working full time to make more laws since 1789. They've done a lot, we break laws every day with or without knowing. (I've had an awful bit of luck the past few days, hence the delay in response). So your definition of not being "so easily controlled" is that you do the same thing everyone else does?
  25. QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Dec 21, 2013 -> 10:02 PM) I've got more "broken windshield" tickets than everyone on this board combined. I change my driving habits from sub-2000 lb sports car to 80,000 lb monstrosity. I don't whip my International (no more Peterbilt, RIP buddy) around the same way I do my Miata. I'm assuming you also don't go around with offensive comments/jokes plastered on the side of your truck either.
