White Sox cuts, round 2
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 24, 2015 -> 02:01 PM) He can play all 3 positions plus some OF. It's not like the Sox have can't miss guys ahead of him. Which, should be pointed out, he's going to have to be comfortable with if he's going to carve out an MLB career. So why not let him play OF and a different IF position every day?

White Sox cuts, round 2
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 24, 2015 -> 01:56 PM) This is what people are missing here... how do you get Leury a full season of AAA AB's? Who of Davidson, Saladino and Sanchez do you remove playing time from to give it to him? No one, for me. Beckham?

White Sox cuts, round 2
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 24, 2015 -> 02:32 PM) You could be right, but again, Leury only has 240 AB in AAA and was in over his head and not batting regularly, a recipe for bad results. Emilio Bonafacio is loved here. He put up a .650 OPS last year, the second highest of his career. Leury could develop enough to put up a .650 OPS IMO. I agree. I think he can drop his K rate substantially if he improves his approach. His contact rate has not been nearly as bad as his K rate would suggest. With some reps and instruction, I could absolutely see him becoming a poor man's Bonifacio, which definitely has some value.

ST 3/23 Sox vs Padres 3:05 start
QUOTE (SoxAce @ Mar 23, 2015 -> 04:51 PM) His speed should be fine at least. He looks much faster from losing the weight. The real question will be how hesitant he is with balls close to fence or within diving range cause of his shoulder. The real issue is terrible jumps and routes, IMO.

White Sox aim to follow up on success of 2014 draft
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 23, 2015 -> 11:42 AM) Was there an update on this? Supposedly he said his arm was tight. If it was a UCL, I would think he would have described it differently. I think it was on a podcast I listened to recently, but someone mentioned that "arm tightness" is pretty universally what pitchers begin to complain about when they eventually need Tommy John.

F. Gutierrez/J.Montero available for bench roles?
Tangentially related -- the Rockies just released Jhoulys Chacin because they didn't want to pay him $5m. I wouldn't mind if the White Sox picked him up for less.

Sox sign Eaton to 5 yr contract, $23.5 mil
QUOTE (LDF @ Mar 20, 2015 -> 04:55 PM) i was thinking that, but at the same time, he must really like the sox. he will be 33 yr old before he becomes a FA?? i truly hope the best for him and of course the sox. I mean, he just made 20 million bucks If we're being honest, it's a great deal for anyone

David Cameron @DCameronFG · 52m 52 minutes ago Like this Eaton deal for both sides. Eaton was never going to get big arb money but Sox the protect against Brantley/Gomez breakout. David Cameron @DCameronFG · 51m 51 minutes ago And if there's any kind of player who should sign an early deal, it's the older injury prone guy with limited power. Good for Eaton too

Sox sign Eaton to 5 yr contract, $23.5 mil
QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Mar 20, 2015 -> 02:57 PM) Or the opposite happens and the end years go down. Everyone would have wanted Beckham go sign this type of deal after his first season with the team, he definitely wasn't worth it in any season after that. It is a risk/reward thing, given his history of injuries the risk is a bit higher which holds down some of the investment in the pre-free agency years. On the other side it does provide cost certainty when planning for future payroll. It is a fair deal at this point, Eaton gets more money upfront and probably loses a little at the end of arbitration IF he stays healthy. Right, but that's the risk of any contract extension. I think his injury risk is definitely reflected in the price, considering the guy already has two full years of service time.

ST 3/20 Sox vs Cubs 3:05 start
QUOTE (fathom @ Mar 20, 2015 -> 02:52 PM) Abreu might hit .415 this year with 5 homers Haha he definitely looks like that now. But, he's not in his groove yet. Just trying to get the bat head on the ball.

LOL @ "This might be the best defensive OF in the major leagues."

Sox sign Eaton to 5 yr contract, $23.5 mil
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 20, 2015 -> 02:40 PM) The longer you wait, the higher those end years go, and the less likely they are to resign. Exactly. If he put up the season we all want to see in 2015 (140+ games @ .350+ OBP), he'd be at 4 years of service and we'd be talking about something in the $50-60m range.

ST 3/20 Sox vs Cubs 3:05 start
QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Mar 20, 2015 -> 02:35 PM) From what I've seen Micah hangs in there pretty well against LHP. Seems to have an opposite field approach. God, Hawk ranting already, just said a fast runner changes the game more than a HR. And Micah gets picked off, lol. But you couldn't have pulled a greased tee out of Travis Wood's behind!

QUOTE (fathom @ Mar 20, 2015 -> 02:33 PM) Noesi's fastball is so straight. Three fly outs to the track/home run last inning He REALLY needs to get it down lower in the zone.

Sox sign Eaton to 5 yr contract, $23.5 mil
QUOTE (Knuckles @ Mar 20, 2015 -> 02:32 PM) $23.5M Damn. I'll take it. Looks like we definitely got a discount for taking his health risk.

QUOTE (Mike F. @ Mar 20, 2015 -> 02:09 PM) Flowers is in midseason form already lol. But man, Noesi looked GOOD in that inning. He seemed a lot more aggressive than he was last year. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Mar 20, 2015 -> 02:10 PM) Flowers in mid season form already. Flowers in midseason form already.

As much as I rag on him, it feels good to hear Hawk's voice right now.

Brad Penny touching 94, leading candidate for 5th starter
QUOTE (LDF @ Mar 20, 2015 -> 12:52 PM) i leave that part of the stats to yous guys, who are way smarter than i in this area. He basically looked just a touch better than John Danks last year, statistically. He's only a year removed from being really solid, though.

Brad Penny touching 94, leading candidate for 5th starter
QUOTE (LDF @ Mar 20, 2015 -> 12:50 PM) in most cases you would be right, but they have players with no options and may be lost on the waiver list. if it is him, other players should be avail. According to Roster Resource (awesome website if anyone isn't aware of it), Wood and Turner are the only projected starters that are out of options, but it looks like they're going to be able to stash Turner on the DL for OD. Edwin Jackson definitely appears to be the odd man out when Turner comes back, though. http://www.rosterresource.com/mlb-chicago-cubs/

I don't see any reason that the Cubs would be looking to move their own pitching depth at this point.
