  1. QUOTE (flavum @ Feb 24, 2015 -> 09:16 AM) Danks had 20 quality starts last year. Where was he ranked in the league on that? Lol, I don't know. Why? EDIT: I found a site that measures it! The answer is 41st. Of course, by QS, Alfredo Simon was better than Chris Sale. So if QS makes John Danks NOT terrible, then maybe we have no hope against the Tigers.
  2. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Feb 24, 2015 -> 08:22 AM) Well he didn't suck for the White Sox last year but alright. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Feb 24, 2015 -> 08:35 AM) No I don't think John Danks sucks either. He just makes too much money and was way better before. Of those that qualified for the ERA title last year: By ERA, the fourth worst pitcher in the majors was Hector Noesi. The fifth worst was John Danks. By FIP, the third worst pitcher in the majors was Hector Noesi. The fourth worst was John Danks. By xFIP, the second worst pitcher in the majors was John Danks. The tenth was Hector Noesi. By fWAR, the sixth worst pitcher in the majors was Hector Noesi. The ninth was John Danks. TL;DR No matter how you slice it, both sabermetrically and traditionally, John Danks and Hector Noesi were among the bottom ten pitchers in the entire major leagues last year.
  3. QUOTE (LDF @ Feb 23, 2015 -> 11:11 PM) not only Sir Charles but Jeff Samardzija not a big fan of analytics as well. http://www.prosportsdaily.com/articles/whi...ics-342924.html That's not what I got out of the article at all. He was asked if Don Cooper is out of touch because he isn't into sabermetrics (which is a pretty loaded question), and he said: “Sabermetrics, nyeh. Sounds like a lot of hot air,’’ Samardzija said, smiling. “I think there are definitely positive aspects to it. I think there is some information you can take from it that’s important. But ultimately from a player’s point of view, you want a coach that can relate to you. Can help you with adjustments mid-game. “I think preparation with numbers and stats and all that’s great, but when the bullets are flying, you need a guy that knows your personality, can relate to you and get you to change or fix what’s going wrong. If you don’t respect the guy that’s telling you that information, you’re not going to listen to him.’’ Sounds like he's just defending Don Cooper, and echoing what many believe about coaches, which is that managing personalities is their most important job.
  4. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Feb 23, 2015 -> 08:41 PM) You might want to read his "interests" under the profile page. Lol. That guy.
  5. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Apr 27, 2014 -> 08:49 AM) TUC sent me a message to deliver to the soxtalk world Is he banned currently?
  6. I just realized I probably played against JB Shuck in High School
  7. The problem is that Beckham isn't even versatile enough to make sense there. Shuck is at least left-handed, and Bonifacio can essentially play every position other than catcher. If you're afraid Bonifacio can't play SS well enough, then Leury Garcia is a better option than Beckham.
  8. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Feb 23, 2015 -> 02:12 PM) lets not talk about Hudson, mmmk? The Sox rightfully cut bait on him He's got the same amount of Tommy John surgeries as Brandon Beachy!
  9. QUOTE (Jake @ Feb 23, 2015 -> 01:58 PM) I've been waiting 11 years for official membership Haha, well maybe that's because you're From: Reality
  10. Edwards is the one I don't get. He doesn't seem any more appealing than Montas.
  11. QUOTE (brett05 @ Feb 23, 2015 -> 01:44 PM) Cool. I thought with the comment kinda going by the wayside that the board believed that Vegas sets win totals to projections. Whew! You're not TRULY a member of the board until you've gotten an official misconduct warning from a moderator based on a conversation you've had with greg.
  12. QUOTE (LDF @ Feb 23, 2015 -> 12:38 PM) i believe you are missing Edinson Vólquez -sp. but the point i have always said, get another sp who is quality, who is experience, to help eat innings. to help protect the sox top 3 sp's. and if needed to step in, in case of injury. the sox top 3 sp's and the lineup is tough, bring in Rodon who will be developing and the pen will be 1 tough sob group to beat. 1 yr contract, when jeff s goes, and this other pitcher, the sox have rodon stepping in and then the other prospects the sox have deverloping. Volquez signed 2/20 or something.
  13. I don't think it's at all unreasonable to have passed on paying $2m to a guy who will, best case, pitch a half a season.
  14. QUOTE (shysocks @ Feb 23, 2015 -> 09:58 AM) BAKE SALE!!! This post is so much better because of your avatar pic
  15. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 23, 2015 -> 09:30 AM) Where does that extra $30 million penalty go to? Bud Selig's pension? An MLB fund designed to funnel the money into administration of international talent acquisition. It's been an interesting point of controversy -- league officials have said that the fund was never designed to be even a fraction of what it's become. Many speculate that the money will be used to implement an international draft ASAP.
  16. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Feb 20, 2015 -> 02:06 PM) Ok, well the dates seem to be all over the place. This is the first time I have heard only two weeks. Much like NSS, if it is only a few weeks, yeah run whoever out there a few times to get the extra year of control. But if there is a need for Rodon, I don't think the SOX will virtually punt 5-8 starts by starting say a still-damaged Johnson, Carroll or Beck if Rodon is healthy and needed. Does anyone know for sure when the cut-off is? The Super Two deadline is a moving target -- you have to be among the top x% of rookies in service to reach it. Usually if you wait until mid-June, you're safe. But this is something different, it's just avoiding free agency. To become a free agent, a player has to end the season with six year of service time and not to have agreed to additional contract terms for the future. Here's an article that explains in detail: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-myth-of...f-team-control/
  17. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 20, 2015 -> 01:54 PM) Are we sure that it is just a couple weeks for the extra year though? If so I agree, complete no-brainer for him to be in Charlotte (barring injuries that force the Sox' hand). QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 20, 2015 -> 02:01 PM) I think technically all it has to be is one day, though that would bring a grievance from the union. Right, the trick is just to prevent him from having six full years of service time at the end of his sixth year. But if a team was obviously gaming that system, they'd get in trouble. So they say something like "we wanted him to get a couple starts under his belt to work on command" and give it a couple weeks.
  18. QUOTE (ChiSox59 @ Feb 20, 2015 -> 10:54 AM) I think this line of thinking is somewhat backwards. Sure, if Rodon doesn't pitch for the Sox until June, they'll get an extra year of control - which is great, and should try to achieve that, IMO. However, they're also giving up 40% of a season of Rodon on the front end. It is a good trade off, in theory, but if the SOX need him before June, and he is healthy and the best option, they won't hesitate to call him up. I just hope it isn't in the bullpen. That's not true though -- to get the extra year of control, they only need to wait a couple weeks. The June date is relevant if they want to dodge the Super Two deadline, but you can throw that out the window and still get the extra year. And the year is WAY more valuable than avoiding Super Two. The cost is just basically nothing. You're talking about getting a seventh year of control and all you have to do is give Hector Noesi two starts. Pending some kind major injury/depth issues, it would be a flat-out boneheaded move for the Sox to break camp with Rodon.
  19. I don't know why we're so eager to pay the dude before he even pitches. He's had one season as a true front-end starter, let's let him have another before we pay him like it's a foregone conclusion that he will. He isn't going to give us a discount to dodge free agency, which means we're going to pay him free agency money, which means we might as well wait and see.
  20. I think most people think the Rodon thread is most interesting, but to me, it's catcher. I would love for the Sox to at least be considering the idea that two catchers could play Flowers off of the 25 man roster. None of these, obviously, are sure things, but Soto/Kottaras could be noticeably better than Flowers/anyone else if the aforementioned are actually healthy.
  21. QUOTE (kapzk @ Feb 19, 2015 -> 01:36 PM) Thanks. And yeah that extra year of control on Rodon will be huge. Yep, which is why it would be ludicrous to start Rodon in the Majors, even if they planned on bringing him up by May.
  22. QUOTE (woods of ypres @ Feb 19, 2015 -> 12:00 PM) I don't think BABIP is a one size fits all stat. I think once on CC Brain Kenny even said if a player continuously has a high BABIP its okay because its "his line", or something like that. Still though, .350 is about as high as anybody can sustain. And people that have done so over long careers are usually hall of famers or close.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 18, 2015 -> 03:37 PM) Jon Lester? Samardzija would have liked it just fine at $150m, too. The Cubs just wouldn't give him more than $75m.
  24. QUOTE (brett05 @ Feb 18, 2015 -> 11:46 AM) We shall see. Perhaps I'll be the village idiot for the board. Perhaps not. But I haven't seen any stats that show me that I am wrong, can you repost if you have them? The graph that was shown didn't do that and I pointed out the flaw in it though I admit it was nice to see. Generally, it'll be helpful to cite some evidence along with a claim you make. Like Balta (I think) said before: it's really pointless to try to prove a negative, and all professionals in every field of analysis and projection agree. It's a basic tenet of the scientific method, in fact. Likewise, "it's pretty darn obvious from watching" isn't very persuasive. An example: a few years back, Dave Cameron wrote some article about how Edwin Jackson was underrated and John Danks was overrated. In the comments section, I said something like" The problem with Edwin Jackson is that he's boom or bust. From watching practically all of his starts this year, I feel like I can tell how his night will go in the first inning. If he has his command, he's elite, but if he doesn't he's a total disaster. John Danks appears to be more reliably useful even if he doesn't have his best stuff and even if Jackson will have more awesome starts." Unfortunately for me, Dave Cameron responded by pulling up a query of his game scores for every start that year and showed me that Edwin Jackson was way more consistent that John Danks. The evidence was indisputable -- even if you don't like game score as a proxy for total value, the consistency was still clearly there. I felt like a dumbass. I could have sworn I was right and that I knew it because I took the time to watch every day. So that's how far "it's obvious from watching the game" goes.
  25. QUOTE (brett05 @ Feb 18, 2015 -> 02:33 PM) I like bwar over fwar but to each their own. Why? Also, with both pitchers and hitters?
