QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 06:40 PM) What will be the approximate difference in Appel's bonus between this year and what he would have received last? I wonder if it was worth the risk. He will get more now, but he also is a year further away from arb and free agency if he is any good. Slot is like $7.7m for #1. It's more like $3m for #9.

I wonder if he could get more velocity from a lower arm slot. I'm sure there's a great reason not to change that now.

Buttersnitch! These blackout rules are malarkey!
Eminor3rd replied to The Ultimate Champion's topic in Pale Hose Talk
If you subscribe to ****ing cable, you should be able to watch the blackout games on any device. I tried to use MLB.tv to watch games when I was with my mom in the hospital for three weeks and was completely shut out. So stupid. I'm already paying for this game TWICE. -
QUOTE (MnSoxFan @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 10:58 AM) OK, my intent was not to call Jeter a great defensive SS initially, I was just pointing out that a guy could make a ton of errors early on and still stay in a position for the rest of his career. I did not do a good job of saying that. And I apologize for going off track to defend Jeter, but you guys are correct that he was not an above average defensive SS. So, a SS can make 50 errors and can turn out to be a decent SS, many of those early errors are also attributed to the field conditions in lower leagues. But to me, no way a 2Bman should be making 18 errors by now. Not sure how many are throwing errors, and those are really terrible if happening already at 2B, unless on occasions of making a great play and trying to hurry a throw. Now watch me be totally wrong and the guy turns out to be a good 2Bman. But I still say just move him, and the sooner the better. Just my opinion. Errors aren't the thing. It's range that makes the biggest difference.

QUOTE (Jake @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 12:27 PM) A torn labrum in the hip sure wouldn't stop me from picking Manaea. That isn't that big of a deal. The thing is if he's fixable, he's a near lock for top 5 next year, so there's no way he's going to sign as low as #17. Slot value there is $2.1m, slot value at #1 is $7.7m. He's going back to school.

Yeah Omogrosso is not very good, guys. There's worse out there, granted, but I will shed no tears for swapping him with Troncoso/Heath.

QUOTE (mike89128 @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 02:19 PM) This is way off topic.I've been a Sox fan since 1951.Living in Vegas I get MLB extra Innings package. But the west coast teams, except Seattle are blacked out in Vegas when the Sox play them regardless where played, the Oakland series is blacked out.I've heard MLB is going to revamp its blackout rules for next year.Does anybody have facts about the changes. Thanks If it's off-topic, my friend, you should consider starting a thread about it.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 12:49 PM) It is a lot different now than it used to be with the new CBA. If you go more than 10% over your allotment, you lose your next first round pick. 15%+ and you lose two first round picks. It isn't like before when you just went over slot. It now means something. Yes, the game has changed now. You gotta do something like Correa and the Astros to get overslot later now. And there's a pretty strict limit to how far you can go.

Gordon Beckham: Player of the Decade and future HOFer

Someone actually said "Jeter but better." -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 10:24 AM) The preview says Gonzalez's stock is rising because of the development of his slider. They use different balls in college. Thicker and higher seams. Sliders tend to flatten out a little bit when college pitchers turn pro. If his fastball has a lot of movement, that's a good thing, and there is always the possiblity his slider will still be effective with the different ball, but it is worth noting college baseballs and sliders is kind of like projecting hitters with aluminum bats. That seems very strange that they wouldn't use the same balls.

Callis' final mock has the Sox at Alex Gonzalez. I think that if he's available, he'll absolutely be the Sox pick. Personally, I'd like Renfore, Stanek, or Smith if any of those three drop.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Jun 5, 2013 -> 04:25 PM) He battles. He does not give up. That's good enough for me too What does that even mean? He doesn't start throwing BP pitches and losing on purpose? He's walked 5 guys and gotten 4 double plays. He's been lucky. Most of the time, those are going to be hits and runs. He isn't good, he's been passable because he's been lucky. Why do we give him credit for trying? Of course he's trying. He's battling to be a rich Major Leaguer. -

QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jun 5, 2013 -> 04:05 PM) They should fire Manto and hire Frank Thomas. I imagine Frank Thomas would try to teach guys how to work the count and get a good pitch to hit. -

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Jun 5, 2013 -> 03:14 PM) This lineup has not worked all season yet they keep trotting it out there. I understand there are not many options but this is becoming the exact definition of insanity. What the f*** difference does it make if you are shutout one way or another? The big fat kid gets to bat fourth and the fast guy gets to lead off. What do you suggest as an alternative? Everyone on the 40 man roster sucks. -

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 5, 2013 -> 05:25 AM) http://www.journalnow.com/sports/columnist...19bb30f31a.html Also, another article at milb.com The month Courtney Hawkins spent on the disabled list was a long time for a young guy eager to make the most of his first full pro season. It made the 19-year-old antsy, so much so that in his return on Sunday, he struck out four times in five at-bats. High strikeout totals are the one knock on Hawkins, but after a couple games to settle back into his routine, he flashed the tool that makes his upside tantalizing -- power, in abundance. The White Sox top prospect hit his ninth and 10th homers, drove in five runs and scored three times on Tuesday night, powering Class A Advanced Winston-Salem to a 12-5 victory over Salem. "Two home runs is two home runs, that's always a decent day," Hawkins said. "It feels good, but really, I'm just glad to be playing again." The 13th overall selection in last year's Draft was hitting .177 before suffering a shoulder injury while making a diving catch. He's 5-for-15 in the four games since coming off the DL to bring his average back up to .200. But Hawkins knows he needs to cut down on strikeouts after fanning 51 times in 95 at-bats. The key is not simply not trying to strike out, but slowly learning how to make more consistent contact, he said. "Coming up now my biggest focus is putting the bat on the ball. The home runs I know are gonna come," he said. "At the beginning of the season, I was so worried about strikeouts. I'd think, 'Don't strike out, don't strike out, don't strike out,' and I struck out more. So right now, if it happens, it happens; it's baseball. I'm not the first one to have strikeouts. I go up there and the only thing on my mind is to make contact, get a good pitch to hit, and if it doesn't come, take a walk." Seems like he has a good chance to figure it out. Who knows really, but everything I've read him say has sounded really mature and open-minded.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 4, 2013 -> 07:20 PM) IF Don Cooper sees something he thinks he can fix, he could be better than anyone currently in the pen. If not, you don't pick him up. Its not like you are losing something by sending Omo to Charlotte. Yeah, this is the point. HR has sucked but he has a huge arm, and our pitching coach, who has had some success fixing guys with big arms and control problems, hasn't had a shot at him yet. And it wouldn't even be a possibility if we weren't using Omogrosso right now. He might not be any better than Omogrosso, but he probably won;t be worse and there's upside.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 4, 2013 -> 05:13 PM) The big issue is that the Cubs are claiming so many people these days, and I'd be surprised if they don't go after Rodriguez especially after Hoyer talked today about wanting guys who throw hard. If he gets to the Sox, I'd be all for giving Rodriguez a shot. This is true, the Cubs pen is in absolute shambles.

QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jun 4, 2013 -> 04:47 PM) Hmmm... I'm probably drinking the koolaid but it looks better. Yeah that looks bad to me.

Plus, I think a lot of the reason they were willing to move Santos was BECAUSE of Reed.
-
If Reed goes, I'd expect that a lot of other guys go first. I think there is an argument to move him, but it would be bone-headed to move Reed and keep Rios/Peavy/etc. unless someone REALLY offered the moon.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 4, 2013 -> 04:39 PM) He is shorter and dumber than I would like to see at 1B, but he seems to be playing himself to either there or DH. Yeah, it isn;t ideal by any means, but as long as he remains one of the 9 best bats in the system, that's where he's going to get pushed. Fast OF guys are just what we have the most of in the system, and they're all substantially better than tank out there. Of course, I assume Rios is gone soon, so if De Aza goes too, we may have some holes to fill.
