  3. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Aug 21, 2009 -> 07:09 PM) So? Where do the PROFITS go? In the US case, except Ford now, they go to the US government. How nice! To the shareholders since I think all of these are publicly traded companies. Honda and Toyota are traded on the NYSE. So the profits go to you and I through our Stocks, Mutual Funds, etc. (incl International Funds)

  5. Not great... but another sign of trending in the right direction. July unemployment dips in 17 states, rises in 26 Unemployment rate drops in 17 states in July; 21 states add jobs, some credit federal stimulus By Christopher S. Rugaber, AP Economics Writer On Friday August 21, 2009, 11:43 am EDT WASHINGTON (AP) -- The unemployment rate fell in 17 states and the District of Columbia last month, a positive sign even as the pain of joblessness remains widespread. The Labor Department said Friday that the jobless rate fell in July in New York, Oregon, Minnesota and Virginia, among other states. It increased in 26 states. While jobs remain scarce, the figures are an improvement from previous months. Only five states saw their unemployment rates drop in June. In May, the jobless rate fell in one state.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 21, 2009 -> 02:50 PM) My only bone with this program (well besides the obvious miscalculations) was that they allowed this to be applied to any car company. This program should have been kept to the big 2 US automakers. I can't believe if we are going to giveaway money, that we wouldn't make sure it saved jobs that actually can support people. 9. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 20, 2009 -> 04:51 PM) I could drag this down the drug-legalization route but I think there's a better way to look at it. The government does all sorts of things to encourage or discourage behaviors using the tax law. We may disagree with some of them from each side, but the concept has been well established going all the way down to the local level. We want certain types of businesses to survive, so we subsidize their product or we give them a tax break. We want people to buy houses, so we give homeowners a gigantic tax break in the mortgage interest deductions. We want people to stop smoking, so we've started taxing the Hell out of cigarettes. We want people to invest in retirement so we give huge tax advantages for people putting money in the stock market. We want people to have health insurance so we give a gigantic tax credit for businesses that provide it. There's no reason why we can't use this already-existing framework. Sure a "Pop tax" may sound funny, but on paper, it's a sound policy. You want people consuming less high calorie, low nutritional value foods? make them more expensive. You want people drinking less? Tax it more. People still keep the choice, but the government makes it more advantageous for you to choose not to engage in that behavoir. exactly. for example, would a tax break for gym memberships encourage people to sign up at health clubs. sure. so then the health clubs get more members, meaning that they hire more personnel and more equipment. plus existing equipment will need to be replaced more frequently. could be an economic/health stimulus program all rolled into one.
  10. Politicizing the terror alerts Tom Ridge confirms a long-held suspicion among Bush critics, writing in his new autobiography that he "was pushed to raise the security alert on the eve of President Bush's re-election, something he saw as politically motivated and worth resigning over."

  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 19, 2009 -> 09:36 PM) Really? It never happens to us, and with two little kids we are in for something at least once a month. maybe its a DuPage Co/Kane Co thing? Or maybe my doctors suck and everyone else knows something that i dont?
  14. i guess the point of my rant, is that a major reason for the healthcare problem we face, is because of the poor choices we all make. (eating too much crappy food, smoking, drinking too much, drugs, not working out, etc)
  15. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 20, 2009 -> 12:42 AM) before? Other than smoking, which is more dangerous than many things already illegal, I don't think you should regulate those health things at all. For lots of reasons. In fact, I find the idea abhorrent, and so would most of the country. regulation is one thing, even though i think regulation of alcohol and drugs is a no brainer.. but maybe creating a healthy person or exercise credit? reward the good behavior? make buying gym memberships, running shoes, bikes, etc tax deductible? cap the max deduction at $250 per person (similar to the teacher buying classroom supplies tax credit) so any abuse would have a minimal tax effect
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 19, 2009 -> 08:21 PM) So I still have not had it explained to me how we are adding 50,000,000 million people to the system, while having, at most, the same number of doctors, nurses, and facilities, without having longer delays, and less care. If you can explain it, I would love to hear it. there's plenty of capacity out there. I'd say that the last 5-6 times I've been to a doctor's office (regular checkups, mtgs with the wife, etc) the waiting room has been completely empty.
  17. well i think before requirements, you'd need to make a public plea. (similar to some other requested sacrifices we've made in history)
  18. now the extension part... knowing that our healthcare system is in need of some kind of reform (leaving that bipartisan agreement alone for now), what is every American's duty to improve the overall system? Sacrifice for the greater good. Shouldn't we, as a country, do something individually that would help the system out... - Stop Smoking - Stop doing drugs - Eat healthier - Exercise - Etc We are asking our country to help us, but what are we doing to help our country?
  19. im in an interesting situation. my employer offers insurance through a "group" option. It's a small group with the average employee age being 50+. We get a whopping $2,000 a year from them to cover insurance costs. If I went on the group plan, I would have gotten worst coverage for approx $3,200 per year. If I went out on my own and bought my own plan, I got better coverage for approx $2,600. Not a tough call.
  20. I wouldnt put Bobby Jenks out to pitch in non-save situations. Just like I wouldn't make Jim Thome a pinch runner or have Jermaine Dye bunt. Lineup 1. Pods-LF 2. Beckham-3B 3. Dye-RF 4. Thome/Quentin-DH 5. AJP-C 6. Konerko-1B 7. Rios-CF 8. Ramirez-SS 9. Getz/Nix-2B I'd rotate Thome and Quentin at DH for the rest of the season. I'd also give Beckham a day off, once Getz is back in the lineup, letting Nix play 3B. Late inning PH would be Thome/Quentin and Kotsay. Lillibridge would be a late inning Pinch Runner along with Wise.
