Well, if it's an internal issue they would be kicked out of school for a semester (assuming no previous offenses), which would only cost them the bowl game, which they're going to lose anyway.
An overwhelming majority of ND alumni in/from the Chicago area are Cubs fans (including one rather infamous one). Only the rare and special ND grad is enlightened enough to be a Sox fan.
How many of the 28 other teams are interested in a pitcher one year away from free agency? The same reason we don't want to give up a lot for him applies to the other teams as well. Nobody is offering an elite prospect to Oakland.
EDIT: In fact, other teams may be offering less than the Sox because the Sox have a better chance of actually keeping him after one year.
Signing Shields (or Lester or Scherzer) may not be an option for the Sox. Those players have a choice in where they will play. A trade means Shark is guaranteed to be here at least a year.
I don't think the deal makes sense for both teams. Doesn't make sense for the Sox since Shark is only signed for one year and a replacement for Alexei is at least a year away.
Not sure how much it makes sense for Oakland either since they seem to be acquiring guys with more than 2 years of team control right now.
I agree with you about not giving up Semien. I think I disagree in that I'd be willing to give up Anderson if Oakland threw in a prospect coming back with Shark. Or if the deal somehow expanded to include Reddick.
Of course, "anybody else" may not be enough to get the deal done. I don't know if you could throw together some combination of Sanchez, Johnson, Montas, Danish and Hawkins that could get it done.
