  1. QUOTE (Lillian @ Jan 18, 2014 -> 05:55 AM) Thanks for the clarification. Epstein was probably just lucky. I doubt that he knew it wouldn't translate as bad as it sounds in English. "Commodity" certainly isn't the best English word to use, if the intention is to show respect. Most Americans wouldn't think anything of it, but I understand that Japanese culture is quite different. It just sounds like he's property but I get what you mean. They should have just said he's an important player for this team.
  2. QUOTE (Lillian @ Jan 18, 2014 -> 02:28 AM) The N. Y. taxes must be a big consideration for players. What is the after tax equivalent amount the Yankees would have to pay to match a White Sox offer of $20 Million for 7 years (opt out after 4)? Here is how to not show the kind of respect Japanese culture values: http://www.tri-cityherald.com/2014/01/17/2...-over-cubs.html Referring to Mr. Tanaka as a "valuable commodity" is not a good first step. I'd love to know exactly how that translates in Japanese. If it connotes anything like "valuable piece of meat", the Cubs chances might have taken a pretty good hit, with that tactless remark. Taisetsu no hito 大切の人 or taisetsu no mono 大切の物. = Valuable person/thing It translates properly.

    2014 TV thread

    Chicago PD just seems brutal. The Chicago Code was way better IMO.
  4. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 03:41 PM) BEER Little early to start pounding the brewskies...
  5. Wite I'm shocked to hear you say this. You're usually one of the "let's just see how it plays out" type of guys. I'm sure earlier you said something similar. What changed your tune?
  6. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 02:56 PM) I know some Americans that have a hard time with English. Yeah, plenty do. English is a very difficult language. I know some students in Japan that had a better grasp of English grammar than American college graduates. No hyperbole.
  7. The Japanese education has mandatory English for students at a very young age (I've seen kindergarten). Most Japanese people speak English but are too shy to actually use it in the presence of an American. This is due to the fact that Japanese people are very prideful and to be ridiculed and shamed is very devastating to them. For the sake of modesty, Tanaka is saying his family doesn't speak English because it couldn't be further from the truth.
  8. QUOTE (Big Hurtin @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 02:14 PM) Did you sleep through the 2006/2007 playoffs? You don't remember when Bellichick went for it on 4th down on their own side of the field? I do remember that now that you mention it. So you proved my point that it took a miraculous comeback and crazy coaching for Manning to get his first ring. Also, a Rex Grossman lead Bears squad in the super bowl.
  9. I don't think Manning gets over the hump against Brady. I bet that man sees Brady in his dreams taunting him.
  10. QUOTE (Mattchoo @ Jan 17, 2014 -> 01:03 PM) Cubs have the payroll to do it..... They also probably want to get it done for Cubs Convention... OR at least please the fans after the Clark the Cub debacle. OT: Clark the Cub was just poorly introduced in my opinion. I think a mascot is fine for the Cubs, but they should have introduced him in person at Cubs Convention. That mascot is absolutely brutal and a slap in the face to cubs fans who have been waiting for grand wizard theo to perform his magic show.
  11. Hurt is going 0-2 Sqwert is going 1-1. Kyyle is going 2-0.
  12. To acquire the best hitter in Cuba and the best pitcher in Japan in a off season would be nothing short of extraordinary.
  13. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 16, 2014 -> 03:00 PM) That would double their payroll QFT
  14. 決定 = THE DECISION; JAPANESE STYLE. Where will Masahiro Tanaka take his talents? Hopefully not to south beach. Really, that would be horrible.
  15. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 16, 2014 -> 01:35 PM) I knew it, damn, you got me. You got me too
  16. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 16, 2014 -> 01:37 PM) Translation: The Sox were the only team to take their shoes off before the meeting. That's only when entering someone's house...
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 16, 2014 -> 11:21 AM) I thought they were saving him for the playoffs?
  18. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 16, 2014 -> 12:32 PM) LOL. I think I trust 1100+ innings of work more than one 4 inning start where every ball seemed to find a hole. In his 3 other postseason starts in 2013, he went 19.0 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 23 K I was just trolling.
  19. That's an insane amount of money for a guy who choked in the playoffs.
  20. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 15, 2014 -> 12:58 PM) He admitted "The Decision" deal was just plain wrong. LeBron seems as likeable, if not more, as any of the great players close to his stature in pro sports. The Decision is history. I'm more referring to the b****ing at refs and flopping. Granted a lot players do it but it Lebron wants to toot his own horn as a legend, he should embrace that role more.
  21. Maybe Lebron should end his theatrics and stop being a clown if he wants people to take him seriously. He really embraced that heel role a few years back. He's getting better but still a very unlikable guy. (Great player though)
  22. QUOTE (DashFan @ Jan 14, 2014 -> 09:40 AM) Long time lurker, I'm going to try posting a bit more though. I like this signing and I'm surprised no other teams snagged him up as a cheap 4 or 5 option. For us, he's great depth. If everything goes well this season and our staff can stay healthy, we won't see Axe in the majors. But I've never understood the hate on this board for a guy who makes the most out of what he has and gets results. The game he pitched against King Felix last year was a great example of the kinda stones this guy has. He may not have the greatest stuff but he isn't afraid to attack the strike zone and get guys out. I see so much stuff about how he's going to get destroyed every start and he goes out there and gets his outs. Sure he has had an occasional bad game, but who expected him to be Chris Sale? I certainly felt more confident watching him pitch than Gavin over the past couple seasons. He just has the right mentality. How can you not love the guy? It's great to have guts but results are important too. The guy just doesn't have quality MLB stuff. Guts =/= talent
  23. Yeah I highly doubt this to be true. Stirring the pot.
  24. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 13, 2014 -> 02:37 PM) Tanaka's honey prefers the west coast. Source?
  25. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jan 13, 2014 -> 02:16 PM) Modest? Well-spoken? He's not running for office. I think he's just referring to him as likeable, which is true. It's hard to dislike the guy because he just seems honored to play the game. Kaep just looks like a thug. Cam is narcissist. That FSU clown can't even speak English. I think that it goes a long way.
