Kershaw Signs Record Contract

Featured Replies

Sounds like it will average $30 million annually, which would knock ARod out of the to all time slot.

while there may have been brief talk of $300M "lifetime" deal for kershaw, more serious mid-year talk said closer to 250M.

ESPN reporting they have reached agreement on a 7 year, $215 million deal. Wow.

That brings their payroll to roughly $240M this year.

How the f*** are they gonna afford Tanaka?

thier luxury tax is going to be more than the Astros payroll lol

Wow, almost 31M per year and the deal comes with an opt-out clause after the 5th year. I hope for the Dodgers sake that Kershaw's shoulder and elbow hold up because he has racked up some innings for such a young pitcher. And people are scared about Tanaka.

Nevertheless Kershaw is a f***ing stud. Congrats to him on his deal.

Wow is right...........now every scrub starter is going to think they should get 12 to 15 mil a yr.

So that will more than likely be over 1 million dollars per start

7 years times 35 starts per year equals 245 starts. He more than likely won't make that many though, obviously.

Makes Chris Sale look like he is making a few pennies a year. That's ok, I'll take that Chris Sale contract ANYDAY.

Sales entire 5 year guaranteed contract is what Clayton Kershaw will be making in one year. If you include the options years to extend it out to 7 years, it comes out to just under 2.

Thanks to Kershaw, Sale and his contract are invaluable now.

Of course, the pitching bar has been raised so even mediocrity will be paid very well. Can't imagine what Sale could ask for had he waited another year, considerably more than his current contract.

kershaw breakdown: 22M in '14 (18M sign bonus, 4M sal), 30M in '15, 32M in '16, 33M in '17 & '18, 32M in '19. 33M in '20

While it does seem crazy to give a pitcher $30+ million a year for multiple years, I guess this is the best situation to do it. Kershaw is not a 30-year old free agent, the Dodgers are paying him for his age 26-32 seasons, those are his prime years. Obviously injuries happen to pitchers all the time, but if he stays relatively healthy, it's possible you don't see much decline from the last 3 seasons. Plus, when you are now the richest team in baseball, you can't let the best pitcher in baseball walk away.

So Kershaw will have to average a 5-6 WAR every year for the remainder of the contract to be worth it. He has averaged about 5.5 so far in his first 5 full seasons. So he will have to be the same pitcher for the next 7 years. It's possible, but it requires him to be healthy throughout. That will be the question mark.

I bet the Tigers had wished they'd have locked up or moved Max before this and the Tanaka deal.

He gets a bonus for being top 3 in the Cy Young balloting. $1 million for winning, $500k for coming in second or third.

Kershaw's deal makes me realize more and more just what a steal we got with the Chris Sale extension. Assuming he stays healthy in 2014 and puts up a similar season as 2013, he will have put up a fWAR of 10.2 in the first two years of the contract. Assuming around $5 million in value per 1 WAR, he will have already provided the Sox with $51 million in value. His entire contract, even with the two option years will only pay him $57.5 million. It's not out of line at all to say that if he remains healthy for the duration of the contract, the Sox will have gotten him at about 1/3 cost to value. And that's without even factoring in inflation and rising salaries across the league.

I wonder if the Dodgers ever discussed a Sale-esque extension 2-3 years ago with Kershaw or if he was always looking ahead to a big payday.

This is not quite true. Due to inflationary reasons, we can make a safe assumption that teams will pay more for WAR as the contract goes on. By the end, teams may be paying $6.5-7 mill for 1 WAR.

That's an insane amount of money for a guy who choked in the playoffs.

LOL. I think I trust 1100+ innings of work more than one 4 inning start where every ball seemed to find a hole. In his 3 other postseason starts in 2013, he went 19.0 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 23 K

Kershaw's deal, for salary arbitration purposes, a win for MLB. $18m signing bonus, $4m salary in 2014. Arbitration '14 number, then:$6.57m.

The feeling minor leaguers get when you realize Clayton Kershaw makes your monthly income IN ONE PITCH!
