  1. He literally cannot stop hitting home runs. It's a condition. He should get it looked at.
  2. Real shame the Sox didn't pick up Giolito. Particularly considering their penchant lately for taking pitchers (and with success) whom other teams saw as too risky or flawed (Sale, Danish). I remember reading Robin saying there was no way he'd fall to the Sox at 13.
  3. Marcus Semien: "wait what happens when i hit a go-ahead homer and we don't then give up the lead. does that mean we like win or something"
  4. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Apr 23, 2014 -> 07:40 PM) I understand every player usually goes through bad stretches and he won't hit this poorly all year but I don't get how you can say that based off that stat. I can say it because I have watched enough baseball in my life and have seen De Aza play enough to know he won't hit THIS poorly all year. There's plenty of links you can read about how it makes sense to use BABIP in evaluation. I can post some in the advanced statistics thread after the game if you want, this probably isn't the best place for it.
  5. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Apr 23, 2014 -> 07:27 PM) You can't tell me De Aza has been hitting the ball hard. He has had some s***ty check swing calls on him, I will give him that. But he hasn't been hitting the ball hard enough for me to say balls aren't falling for him Nobody in baseball hits the ball weakly enough to have just 1 in every 6.5 balls put in play result in hits. Not to say he doesn't have some issues this year. He's walking a bit less, striking out a bit more (although you could put down a lot, if not all, of that to BS check swing calls), and looks anxious at the plate. But to say he's "worthless" is silly hyperbole. It may well be that he's less valuable than he has been, but that doesn't mean he won't still be valuable, or that you can even make a judgement after a little over 3 weeks. I guarantee you that if you took whomever is your favourite hitter on the team, I could find you a 3-week stretch where he hit about as badly*. *unless it's Jose Abreu.
  6. QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Apr 23, 2014 -> 07:14 PM) There it is!! A game day thread is not complete until Feeky mentions that awful stat It's pretty relevant when you have people freaking out about players in late April. A look at the box score for our game on this day of last season and we have players batting: .100 .125 .188 S*it happens in a small sample-size. If De Aza is still hitting like this in a month, come back to me. For now I'll go ahead and side with the much greater track record and the fact that balls just aren't falling for him.
  7. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Apr 23, 2014 -> 07:07 PM) I agree you cannot overcome having 2 worthless players on team De Aza is not worthless. He's been worth comfortably over 2 fWAR for 3 straight years. It's April 23rd, his BABIP is .156 and he's still not been worth negative fWAR because of his defence. Relax.
  8. "LOL wtf are you doing stealing 3rd with Abreu batting" - paraphrased Detroit announcers
  9. "Back to back nights, straightaway centre, no way! There's no ballpark in this country that can hold him. His power is off the chain." - Detroit announcers.
  10. Can a kindly mod edit the title from stain to strain? Whomever edited it originally is making me look like a dumbass in front of all my online buddies.
  11. We'll see on Flowers. I can't help but think he's just getting lucky right now, but I'll defer to those with greater knowledge on swing mechanics.
  12. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 23, 2014 -> 06:02 AM) Viciedo and Flowers at the very least have completely different approaches at the plate this year. Dunn is also approaching things differently. What's new about Flowers's approach? He's walking and striking out pretty much exactly the same amount as he was last year.
  13. Don't read this: http://www.sportsonearth.com/article/73018...still-worrisome
  14. Bit jarring that Scott Downs is getting paid more than Chris Capuano
  15. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 22, 2014 -> 05:37 PM) Blame it on Chinese internet... There's a delay and the feed skipped so it seemed like DeAza was one who got out right away. Or it's just too early (736 a.m.) after staying out too late last night, haha. So does Alexei simply have no clue about the team concept of baseball?
  16. QUOTE (Bigsoxhurt35 @ Apr 22, 2014 -> 05:32 PM) Flowers due for a homer Actually he's due to start making a lot more outs
  17. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 22, 2014 -> 05:30 PM) DeAza simply has no clue about the "team" concept of baseball. Sigh. lol
