I wouldn't mind the acquisition at all. I'd imagine it'd be for a reliever. MacDougal or Thornton most likely (Ed Wade has a fetish for them after all). Unless we could dump either Aardsma or Masset on them. Burke could be an ideal platoon partner at 2B and CF with Richar and Owens respectively. .292/.370/.434 in a down offensive year last season against lefties. Richar only hit .205 with less power than when he hit against righties, while Owens only hit .235 against lefties.

QUOTE(beck72 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 10:26 AM) TRading Quentin for an A ball 1b man was dirt cheap. And could be a huge addition. It's funny, D-Backs fans don't seem to mind about this that greatly, mainly because they don't think Quentin will ever become the player he was slated to be. And I find that crazy considering the injury he had in 2007, his age, relative experience etc. and he'll be hitting in a very good hitters park. Carter and Cunningham could become quite good everyday players for the D-Backs eventually, but we've gotten 2 players in Richar and Quentin, who are young, cheap, and can contribute now, and most importantly, offer the team the payroll flexibility it so desperately needs considering some of the salaries some of the older more established players make.

Sox Acquire Carlos Quentin for Chris Carter; DFA Heath Phillips

QUOTE(BearSox @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 09:58 AM) yeah, this deal doesn't make a whole lot of sense from a Diamondbacks perspective, IMO... Well they've had success with our prospects before, Young the main one, and Cunningham kept on hitting last season. Maybe they think Carter has a higher potential to produce, while Quentin could take a while to rehab and get back to where he was at the end of 2006, hence they decided to make a move now. It also gives them the option to maybe trade Jackson in the future years to an AL team as a DH, if he doesn't improve his fielding at 1B, of course Carter ain't the best with the glove either. -
QUOTE(Calderon @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 09:09 AM) Are there any real first basemen left in the system at this point? Brandon Allen maybe?

QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 09:10 AM) It's possible Quentin gets shipped to BOS along with another good prospect for Crisp. And I do think it's possible the Sox would give up a good prospect plus Quentin for Crisp. BOS wants a good position player and top pitching prospect supposedly and the White Sox really seem to like Crisp a lot (at least in the media). That would be a terrible idea IMHO. If the Sox wanted Crisp, wouldn't they just offer Carter straight up to the Red Sox for him? Quentin for 4-5 season (with a few at minimum salary) > Crisp for 2 years (I think that's his contract status, and he's getting paid something like 5.5M in 2008). And you have to ask if Crisp will rebound or not? -
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Aug 8, 2007 -> 03:44 PM) Hmmm, it's an interesting idea. More than anything, the D-Backs need SP'ing, and probably good young pitching. I doubt they would be interested in Contreras, unless the Sox paid the majority of his salary (which I don't really want to do at this stage). So would they be interested in any of our SP spects not named Gio Gonzalez? Jack Egbert for example (his sinker would fit in nicely at Chase Field)? And then we've got Brian Anderson, the D-Backs may think if they get him back to more familiar surroundings, he could rebound, and be an excellent 4th OF for them. Quentin had an OPS over 1.000 when he returned to AAA about a month ago. That shoulder injury really hurt his productivity. He's still got 20-25HR potential with the ability to hit .280-.300. Well I was close except for the D-Backs wanting young pitching. That OPS for Quentin in AAA when he came back this season, should give people a little encouragement.

How many toolsy OF's does Jim Bowden need? 10? 20? Good luck to Manny Acta next season keeping that clubhouse under control.

Sox Acquire Carlos Quentin for Chris Carter; DFA Heath Phillips
DBAHO replied to SoxFan1's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Ha, the White Sox get the guy I wanted (Quentin was my version of Chad Tracy from an off-season or 2 ago). It sucks losing Carter since he's our best position prospect and has 30HR potential. But since he was only in low A ball this season, he's still got a ways to go. But I love the acquisition of Quentin. He struggled with injury this season, with the shoulder issues he had. And I think he's got quite a bit of rehab to do still IIRC. But he is young, and he'll be under our control for about 5 season. He's a plus defender in LF, he's got good plate discipline, and he should give you around .280 wth 20-25 HR's a season. We're basically buying low on him. This time last season, after what he did for the D-Backs at the end of 2006, well it would have been VERY hard to get him. -
Dwight and Bynum had a nice battle with the blocks tonight. Nice to pull out another road win, think we're 10-2 on the road now. Kobe had 19 points in the 1stQ and I thought it could have been one of those nights, but we really fired back in the 2nd quarter. SVG should be coach of the year right now. Can't say enough good things about how much of an upgrade he is over Brian Hill. We're averaging about 15-20 more points a game on offense, and yet defensively we're still playing pretty good.

The Bears need Tony Sparano. He's an assistant head coach / assistant OC / and OL coach for the Cowboys. Before he started, the Boys gave up about 50 sacks in 2004 or 2005. Right now, they have given up 16 sacks for the whole season so far (although Romo is obviously very good at avoiding the rush). He would be ideal as either a new OC or OL coach for the Bears. He was the OC last season, and we still had the around the 4th best offense in the NFL (but obviously Jason Garrett has come in and made that even better, and he'll probably be a head coach next season sadly). He's turned players such as Gurode, Kosier and Colombo from being average players, to very good offensive lineman. And also right now, if you could bring back Ron Rivera for Bob Babich, would you do it? Things have just really fallen apart for the Bears defensively this season (blame Archuleta).

After a weekend at the beach surfing, my feet are absolutely burnt and red, and it really hurts to walk at the moment. Have tried soaking them in cold water and putting some aloe vera cream on them, does anyone else know of some possible remedies?

The Sox have relievers available to trade ?
DBAHO replied to WHITESOXRANDY's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
The major thing Oneli needs to work on, cutting down the flyball ratio, otherwise he'll eventually give up a lot of HR's at the Cell. I still would like to see 1 more acquisition for the pen, probably a Japanese reliever. Then you could use MacDougal in a deal for Bay or Crisp etc. And I imagine the likes of Masset and Aardsma would be prime canditates to be traded to a team desperate for relievers such as the Devil Rays. -
And the NFC is ours (hopefully). Really need to improve our pass defense though. 2 CB's and a new SS on passing downs to sub for Williams.

QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 02:18 PM) Look at the f***ing Knicks/Celtics score... LMAO. I wonder if Zach Randolph still thinks they can beat anybody right now. Maybe this is the final straw for Isiah in New York. Surely it has to. Right? Oh, and Dwight is good.

So can any of you actually watch tonight's game?

QUOTE(EvilJester99 @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 09:45 AM) Saw this on WSI Dan Roche of WBZ-TV says the deal is done and will be announced later this evening Sean McAdam on WEEI saying he is hearing the same thing except it will not be announced until Santana is locked up and the Red Sox would get 72 hours to do so. Boston sends Coco Crisp, Jon Lester, Michael Bowden and Jed Lowrie to the Twins. Also The score had this in the update as well. Ummm WOW. If this happens, I don't think Bill Smith is really endearing himself much to Twinkies fans' right now. But I guess they really wanted Crisp (perhaps over Melky Cabrera). And maybe the Yanks wouldn't give up Hughes. But now Boston having a 1-2 punch of Santana and Beckett, with the likes of Matsuzuka and Schilling below, that's good, very, very good. And they didn't have to give up Buckholz or Ellsburry either.

QUOTE(Cknolls @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 01:51 AM) It all rides on the employment numbers. If unemployment starts to creep, it accelerates the recession. And the way it is setting up, there are going to be lotsa layoffs in the financial sector. There are predictions that if a recession took place over there, unemployment could rise from 4.7% to around 5.5% by the end of next year, which is certainly quite a jump. Interesting times ahead....

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 01:09 AM) I would say the odds are way worse than you think. I would say there is about a 10% chance of a recession, simply because the export #'s are almost exactly replacing the losses in the housing market. The economy will suffer, but I don't think we will ever hit the technical definition of a "recession". Apparently the housing market over there is worse than when you had the recession back in 1991. The Federal Reserve could cut it's benchmark rate to 3%, and the Consumer Confidence Index also fell from a consensus of 91.0 to 87.3 China's economy looks like it maybe slowing down a bit as well, and that could possibly affect exports out of the U.S.

Well done SnB. All the best with the new position in the future. Also I found out yesterday that I have now finished College / University, after passing my last exam(s), so thank god for that.

Joe Nathan on the way out the door...
DBAHO replied to RudyLawRules's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
Yeah it's really a perfect time for the Twins to trade Santana (to the Yanks for Hughes, Cabrera and Jackson) and to also trade Nathan. They'd get quite a lot back in a deal for Nathan. There are a lot of teams out there who could use him. -
QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Nov 30, 2007 -> 08:53 AM) The humorous part of this is that we drafted Broadway over a guy like Garza, etc because Broadway was safer pick that would be ready quickly, wouldnt have the upside but didnt matter because he would be traded anyways. What a chip Garza would of been for a team like ours devoid of position prospects. I am sure that Broadway will get the same type of interest, **snickers***. 2 things; 1 - Prototypical Duane Shaffer draftpick was Broadway. Shows why he's no longer with the organization. 2 - It was basically confirmed by the White Sox scout posting on here that Broadway was drafted because they wanted to use him as a bargaining chip because they thought he would reach the majors quickly. So that really worked out a treat didn't it.

Basically the Twins probably got the best player in the deal with Young, but the Rays got the next 3 best players in the deal. So I think it's a win for Tampa. Kazmir, Garza and Shields is a nice 3'some at the top of the rotation, with the potential to improve. And that infield at the moment would be one of the better ones in baseball (if Pena can repeat his performance from 2007).
-
QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Nov 29, 2007 -> 01:41 PM) Where did you get that the no trade is for the duration? Or are you just assuming? Dotel wants to close, that won't happen here. Riske ... good year / bad year. And remember when we did have Riske last season, Ozzie didn't use him much at all in the 2nd half of the season. Of course back then, MacDougal and Thornton were pitching quite well (Mac especially).

Williams: "Linebrink + Cabrera = 1 Jon Garland."
DBAHO replied to TheBigHurt's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Well I hope if we can trade Uribe for a prospect, that may open up some more $$$ to either improve CF, or use towards a SP such as Colon, Jennings or even Colon on a 1 year deal. Right now the rotation's pegged as Buehrle, Vazquez, Contreras, Danks and Floyd. Obviously the last 3 are huge question marks, but some people are bullish on Jose rebounding (I am not one of them), while at least Danks showed a bit early in the season and Floyd late. But we do have options. At least I think the options we have at AAA in Egbert, Broadway and Gonzalez are better than the Danny Wright's back from a few years ago. -
Wow at Marty. Having Havlat back gives the Hawks 2 consistent scoring lines, and we've got Ruutu on the 3rd line, who's no slouch either. Things are looking good. Let's just hope Marty can actually stay healthy.
