If only the Sox were in Arizona or Los Angeles in late June/early July. I will be seeing the D-Backs against the Giants and maybe the Tigers and Cardinals, and the Angels against the Mariners right before the All-Star Break hopefully though.

QUOTE(Steff @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 12:23 AM) Really...? Hmm.. missed that. Although I try to miss most of the crap that spews from Ozzies mouth. It was from a Phil Rogers piece during the Cubs Series;

QUOTE(Steff @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 12:16 AM) I'm pretty sure the Sox never said Paul was their clubhouse leader.. I would, however, not doubt that Rogers ASSumed that and arranged his words to give that interpretation. Ozzie has said that Paulie is "my leader", don't know KW's stance on the issue. But on Konerko, if he keeps hitting below .250, let him go, sign J.T Snow to platoon with Ross Gload until Casey Rogowski (who's crushing it at B-Ham) or Josh Fields (not so good) is ready to take over.

QUOTE(mmmmmbeeer @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 12:12 AM) which is exactly why i'm baffled that there are some on this site who believed at one point that Jose should go sit in the pen while McCarthy took his spot in the rotation. The guy is finally starting to live up to the hype, let's enjoy the results. Exactly. A lack of run support of Contreras has cost him wins no doubt. Have a look at the run support say Jon Garland would have compared to Jose so far this season.
-
QUOTE(Steff @ Jun 7, 2005 -> 12:11 AM) I think the misconception of Paul being the "leader" comes from his eagerness to run his mouth every time a reporter steps near him. And also when Carlos was dealt, and the Sox were trying to justify why they kept Paulie instead of Carlos. Was in a couple of Phil Rogers' articles at the time IIRC.

QUOTE(Steff @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 11:59 PM) Willie is not liked in the clubhouse. That is not new news.. That was coming out when the Sox were negotiating with Iguchi and even before then IIRC. Still Willie would be a starting 2nd baseman on some other teams in the league, like the Twins for starters.

QUOTE(Steff @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 11:48 PM) If Oz opens up the laundry bag it will be him that suffers... Too bad they just resigned him until 08 with an option for 09 eh Steff?

I know Garland's been the main suprise this season, but I have to say the biggest one to me has been Contreras. He was a HUGE worry for me going into this season, and he's totally proved me wrong. I just didn't see him posting something below a 4 ERA in his time at the Cell. Let's hope he can continue the way he's been pitching.

From the Southtown;

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 11:35 PM) Did Guillen ever deal with Mota? Wasn't Mota traded to the fish last year in the big deal with the Dodgers that included Brad Penny? Yeah that was the case. Either way, Mota would be a damn fine addition to the pen, but beck's post on the clubhouse chemistry and Guillen siding with McKeon is definitely worth noting.
-
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 10:58 PM) That isn't even a fair characterization. Townsend got victimized by a loophole in MLB's negotiating rules that disallowed him from negotiating with Baltimore. He didn't "hold out all year". Wade Townsend pretty much got screwed by Peter Angelos and that's all there is to it.
-
QUOTE(EvilJester99 @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 10:23 PM) That would be awesome if the Sox could somehow get Mota from Fl. Florida is still struggling with their hitters. Not really a lot of great fits with the Sox though, unless it was for prospects.

From the articles today;

Now here's a VERY interesting option;
-
QUOTE(beck72 @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 08:58 PM) If the first 14 picks went that way, wouldn't the sox take C Jeff Clement, who was supposed to be in the top 10? Maybe, but a lot of people think he's a very overrated prospect. It's not like catcher's the BIGGEST need anyways. We've still got Francisco Hernandez .210/.270/.312 down at Kanny, and Donny Lucy who we drafted in the 2nd round last year.
-
QUOTE(beck72 @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 09:08 PM) The sox did take chances last yr as they had a lot of picks. But with only 1 in the first 2 rounds, they should take a "sure thing"--whatever that means. A college guy who has the makeup and track record to get to the bigs and contribute. I agree, a HS guy could have a higher ceiling. But they also have a lower floor. The floor the sox should be looking at IMO, is a guy almost certain to get to the bigs [doesn't have to be an allstar--just a contributor] I can see why you'd want to pick a college guy who's make it to the bigs and contribute. Me on the other hand, I want a guy who at #15, will be an all - star one day. Gotta swing for the fences, sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn't. If you have a loaded system, you go for the high school guy, who could be icing on the cake. If you don't, you want the college guy who you can sort of build your farm system around, if you get what I'm saying. I think the Sox have enough good prospects, that they can afford to take a chance, and with no 2nd round pick, they should be drafting the best guy available (unless he's a Bora$$ client), regardless of how much he's gonna cost.

Coldplay...... you either love em or hate em.

QUOTE(beck72 @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 08:55 PM) With only 1 1st round pick and no 2nd round picks, the sox want to make sure their pick gets to the majors. This isn't the draft to take a chance on a guy [now, last yr's darft with all the high picks was] A solid dependable guy like Carillo, makes sense. Maybe, but I tend to look at things this way. Case Study - Gio Gonzalez and Tyler Lumsden. Both were picked around the same spot. Yes, Lumsden has been injured, but he didn't exactly set the world on fire last season either (although that was probably due to his arm). Gio, on the other hand, the high schooler, has been just awesome so far, and no doubt looks the better prospect. The Sox have enough good prospects at this point, that I think that they should take a high school guy with the higher ceiling. Doubt that's going to be the case this year though, as the majority of the top prospects are college guys.

I ask now, will we have to trade more for Billy Wagner (who's in the last year of his deal), or Eddie Guardado (who still has 1 more year on his deal after this season).
-
QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 03:20 PM) I have to say I'm not nearly as high on Townsend as most of you seem to be. Not only the year off, but during some mid-May workouts his fastball sat at 85-89mph. With most scouts thinking his intensity will lead to the pen for him, I say no thanks. I would rather end up with Carillo, Clement, or get Ryan Zimmerman if he slides. Zimmerman won't be 21 until late September.

Plus another little thing that could impact us;
-
QUOTE(Jordan4life_2005 @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 02:45 PM) I'd rather have Ceaser Cirillo. He may have better results this year, but I think Townsend has more upside than Carillo.

QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 02:23 PM) Chavez, but let's put it this way. Who would you rather trade? PK for Griffey or Everett, Anderson and BMac(probably also Crede) for Chavez? Dave O' Brien is NOT going to trade for Paul Konerko. End of story. If anything, they are going to want a prospect or 2 for Mr. Griffey Jr. They're not contending now, and acquiring PK for 1/2 a season isn't going to help them in the future either. Why would Oakland want Carl Everett? Personally, the way I see a Chavez deal going down is Brandon McCarthy, Sean Tracey and Joe Crede for Eric Chavez. One other thing on Mr. Griffey. Bang for your buck. Even if he hits .310/20 HR's, 100 RBI's, is that still worth $66 million over 4 years? Personally I don't think so.
-
Ok I'm only going to ask this once. Would you prefer to see the payroll increase next season go towards Ken Griffey Jr. or Eric Chavez? Or if we don't get Chavez, let Konerko go. Get J.T Snow to platoon with Ross Gload until Casey Rogowski or Josh Fields are ready. Use the $10 million we'd still have, to get some more good bullpen arms, an upgrade at third base, and to resign Frank and the usual upgrades etc.
-
QUOTE(AirScott @ Jun 6, 2005 -> 01:23 PM) Konerko never did that. Griffey did and could, if he'd adjust. 2000 - .298/.363/.481 2002 - .304/.359/.498
