2016 Cubs catch-all thread
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Sep 5, 2016 -> 01:29 AM) This isn't just at Cubs games...This is literally EVERYWHERE in today' society. As a 25 year old I hate going out with people taking pics and videos and just sitting on their phone. Live in the moment. It's the MLB's fault. They have been the worst of the major sports in terms of getting their content on social media. Their youtube presence is essentially negligible.

QUOTE (ChiliIrishHammock24 @ Sep 4, 2016 -> 11:28 PM) Soo many seething Notre Dame haters on here, yeeesh. Must be a stressful life to have to live holding that much contempt. Days like today make it great. Notre Dame is like this EVERY YEAR. We're all just used to it and glad it's over with.

Thank God we can be spared all the "ND deserves a CFP bid" nonsense.

Texas is playing such inspired football. They're likely not the better team, but they're playing like it's for their season.

Brian Kelly is such an idiot with that incomplete pass challenge. That timeout would have been nice.

2016-2017 NFL Thread
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 4, 2016 -> 09:03 PM) I think if they were easy to find, they never would have paid him what they paid him. But it does seem as a whole, kickers are a lot more reliable than they used to be. Robbie has slipped without a doubt. Hopefully they find someone as reliable as he has been over the years. Right. And again this is just based on the few teams I get the opportunity to watch, but it seems like every year some kicker is leading the franchise or some college kid is kicking the ball 60 yards.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Sep 4, 2016 -> 08:49 PM) Wow. He would have been gone last season if not for his long career.. I think that's the last piece from the Super Bowl and Lovie era Bears. At least I got Lovie in Champaign. And Urlacher on every other billboard on I-90 with his new hair. Who will be the new kicker? I can't imagine John Fox going for two all the time Stupid question, but I rarely think about special teams. Are kickers particularly difficult to find?

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Sep 3, 2016 -> 07:15 PM) It was against Murray State, but at least Illinois looked real good beating them. Real test is next week against UNC. The Illini blew the doors off Murray State and the defense looked like a Lovie Smith defense.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Sep 2, 2016 -> 10:35 AM) We lose Lunt, and our qbs next year will be dreadful. Seriously, Jeff George Jr. is being called the next starter right now... Our DL is going to be great this year, and awful next. DT should be solid but we have 1 capable Big Ten starter at DE next year. Losing a lot in the secondary as well. OL will still be thin, need some guys to step up over the next year. Put all of that together and I'm thinking 2-3 wins next year. Lovie is my boy, but he needs a bowl this year to really keep momentum going. Show that you can win with some talent, take the hit next year and get some of your guys on the field in 2 years. Thanks. That makes sense. After the Beckman scandal I mostly stopped following Illini football. When Cubit was fired, I came back. Glad Whitman cleaned the place up. Hiring Lovie Smith is icing on the cake.

2016 Cubs catch-all thread
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Sep 2, 2016 -> 01:48 PM) If the Cubs get swept in the first round, their season was not exciting then. By your logic anyway. Here's what I said: QUOTE (Deadpool @ Sep 2, 2016 -> 12:10 PM) That's it. And being a World Series contender makes you exciting. You don't have to win it. The longer you believe you can win the WS, the more exciting. We are almost always out too early. The longer you are in contention, the more exciting your season. Period. The first month of our season was exciting with a fast start. That's over now. If the Cubs lose in the first round, it will be a disappointment, but our season will still not be as excited as theirs.

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Sep 2, 2016 -> 01:25 PM) Exactly. Like if there hasn't been an excitng season to you in over ten years, why do you still like this? Haha Judging by the attendance, most people don't like this.

Best HBO Series of All Time
It's Sopranos and it's not particularly close, IMHO. The Wire is second in my book. The Wire was quite good, but between Gandolfini and Falco, there really is no tv character duo that outdoes them. So many great performances in Sopranos.

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Sep 2, 2016 -> 07:41 AM) We have had other exciting years since 05...I hate the notion that winning the World Series is the only factor for an exciting season for some. lol really? 2008 maybe. That's it. And being a World Series contender makes you exciting. You don't have to win it. The longer you believe you can win the WS, the more exciting. We are almost always out too early.

The Anthem
QUOTE (knightni @ Sep 2, 2016 -> 10:59 AM) Playing it at every single sporting event, every single day is a slap in the face to the meaning of the song. It gets routine and loses some of its meaning after awhile. That's the crux of it. We as a country need to learn the difference between Patriotism and Nationalism. Patriotism is significantly more meaningful. Playing a song during which a crowd in made to stand is Nationalism. A standing ovation for an honored veteran is Patriotism. Taking a knee in protest is patriotism. Revealing that your government of the people, by the people, and for the people is trampling on the rights of its people is patriotism. Besides, the National Anthem has no real meaning. It's a crap stanza that ends in a question mark with a tune from Great Britain. American, The Beautiful should be the national anthem anyway.

2016 Democratic Thread
QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 1, 2016 -> 09:52 AM) This continues to be true: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-na...m=.a7b7cb975f0b Well, the more voters you can suppress, the more idiot conservatives can get into office. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 1, 2016 -> 10:38 AM) Related, the scotus rejected north Carolinas voter restriction appeal. Really looking forward to a fully liberal scotus. It's critical, especially as the GOP won't let go of the religious right garbage?

The Anthem
I really hate that the military pays the NFL all this money to make this happen. The NFL wouldn't even play the anthem if the military didn't pay them. The whole thing is a farce and nationalism at its finest. Sitting down during the national anthem is more patriotic than standing during it. DoD paid $53 million of taxpayers' money to pro sports for military tributes, report says

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Sep 1, 2016 -> 01:21 PM) I am VERY excited to see how he does, it's going to be a tough road to 6 wins but they have a shot. Next year is going to be BRUTAL. What about it? I'm not being confrontational, I just haven't followed Illinois football since the Tim Beckman scandal. Came back when they fired Cubit.

Jon Heyman: Sox have little interest in moving Sale or Quintana
QUOTE (soxforlife05 @ Sep 1, 2016 -> 05:02 PM) I hate to throw in the towel for next year already but I think we all know deep down they are going to do the same type of roster moves that were made last year. Part of me doesn't really want to bother with next season...but I will. Right now i'm just so football mode.
