It’s one of the most important questions concerning their draft evaluation skills. If they graded Fields above Stroud, well they were wrong and have to learn from it. What happens If we trade down and any of the top QB’s (but especially Maye or Williams) meet their expectations. You cannot say “no one could have predicted it,” either. When literally those two have been 1A, 1B for a year. I know Bears fans usually cope with such devastating draft oversights by saying, “oh, well, they would not have been the player they are right now in the Bears organization.” Again, no excuse. You had an opportunity to revamp the entire organization and preparation for one of the top quarterbacks. Unless….Fields takes an unprecedented step forward and becomes a Top 10 quarterback when no metric has suggested it is likely. But whatever they choose, just….get it right. That’s all we ask

Poles has to hit right with every draft selection, every roster move; everything. Or else we’re looking at another lost decade with maybe a playoff birth or two sprinkled in

At some point, we have to acknowledge it’s not just a fluke to hit with three straight QBs. What do they see that no one else does…..every single time? It’s more than sitting and learning the position.

They can’t, and as chw42 suggested, that arrangement will lend itself to an unknown looking for their first coaching job.

Their thought process could very well be, we are aware of the trend and purposely won’t fire Eberflus or Poles, regardless of results, to build continuity (and remove that talking point)

It creates unnecessary drama, too. The ol’ quarterback controversy will exist from day one. Every bad game from Fields will start the chatter to replace him. Why put ourselves in this situation? We’re not drafting a QB to learn on the bench from Fields.

Wouldn’t this scenario make it more obvious that Williams will be drafted? You’re not bringing in a new offensive coach to work with two different styles of QB.

I would expect playoffs at a minimum as well. But that would have been the same standard if Fields returned. The difference here is we’re hopefully drafting a QB with the floor of outperforming Fields, and a ceiling of becoming a generational talent. All at a much cheaper cost.

So how does GB keep getting it right? They just lucked in Favre, Rodgers and Love? There’s obviously something they’ve perfected in their evaluations. And i do not believe the “sitting behind another QB learning the craft” nonsense they also bring up with Mahomes and Alex Smith.

Luckily, outside of an unexpected draft trade, one of two highly ranked OL (Alt, Olu) should be available at #9

I was hoping for a scenario where the Bears trade down and draft Jayden Daniels or Penix Jr., but I don’t believe it would be worth the risk to slide below #3 and expect them to be available. We need to decide among Penix Jr./Daniels/Williams/Maye who is the one. Good luck Bears!

Exactly. If any drafted QB can perform better than Fields (which is not a tall order), it will have been a success.

What about the first two plays leading up to those third downs? Fields is not doing ANYTHING

I would love a 300+ yard passing, 3 TD/ 0 INT performance from Fields…..for his trade value.

This may as well be what they thought for the last draft, when the Bears didn’t believe Stroud would be who he is. That is exactly what they pay people to do - analyze stats, scout players, and compile information to come up with a decision. Carolina apparently wanted Stroud, but the owner overruled the decision. What is our excuse? Has it ever come out yet? if the next Stroud is in this draft, they better be the one’s drafting him. unless there’s a Brady type picked in later rounds that the excuse can be used of, “oh well everyone could have drafted him!”

And that’s not to say it was a terrible decision to trade down with Carolina. It has worked out tremendously. We are very fortunate to be in this position to have an opportunity to draft Fields’ replacement. Can we please not screw it up?

This is exactly the mindset we should have. Bears fans need to look closely at what a legitimate, perhaps generational QB looks like and demand that for themselves. Don’t be content with mediocrity. What I love about Stroud’s situation is it exposes several uncomfortable questions. For one, who was involved with scouting and ultimately making the decision that Stroud was not a better choice than Fields? Someone, at some point, had to say - “Yeah we think Fields is better. Stick with him.” I hope everyone involved (Poles, Warren, scouting dept.) have sharpened their evaluation process and hopefully have learned from this mistake. We can’t make it again. If they decide to keep Fields, well then they’ve given us the assurance he is better than every 1st/2nd round QB coming out of the draft. Surely they can’t be wrong two years in a row, right guys!?

Well, we could have had him. I cannot wait to see the next great QB we pass to keep Fields…

I like the data aspect of the article on Fields, but also disagree with how they cherry picked draft position. What about drafts where a QB was taking at #1 and #3? Or #1 and #4? Would we be better off then?

Penix Jr. looks outstanding tonight. I love watching this kid play. He could end up being a real steal for some team.

Wash and NE could always call our bluff. We only have two teams to trade with at the current standings, since Arizona would likely pick MHJ. It would depend how much Washington wants to jump NE. We couldnt risk trading beyond the #4 pick if MHJ is our focus

It’s definitely a tough decision. To even be in this position, where we have the number one pick (plus DJ Moore, plus 25’ 2nd rounder) with a team just outside of playoff contention, says a lot about how this trade has worked out in our favor. Poles deserves credit there.
