  1. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 10:55 AM) Why would the White Sox trade Alexei for Samardzija? That diminishes a lot of what the Sox are trying to do right now, and then they don't have a SS. And why would the A's trade Samardzija for Arruebarruena? He was absolutely terrible in the minors last year and is not a good bet. I just don't see any scenario that makes sense where the White Sox will trade Ramirez. That's not a bad thing. They should explore it, but they need to be asking for a lot and I just don't see it happening. How do you know the sox don't a shortstop besides alexei. How much have you seen semien or sanchez or even saladino play there to no even include them in the conversation. People are acting like if alexei was off the team and the Sox would get value in return then they couldn't compete. Alexei has value but not to to the point of saying we are guaranteed to win with him or without him we are guaranteed to lose.
  2. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 10:45 AM) Then, instead of giving up value, why don't the Sox wait until next year to sign him.?Swapping out Alexei for him doesn't make the White Sox any better in 2015 IMO. Because this is probably the only chance the sox have at really getting him. Next year he's a free agent and will be attached to probably a draft pick, another year older, and will have to bid against other teams.
  3. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 10:41 AM) Who cares what he wants to do if it's not worth any money to him? If coming back home is worth $25 million off his contract to him, ok then we can talk. It wasn't worth that much to him when the Cubs made him a ~$75 million offer well before he hit FA, why do we have any reason to think it's worth that much to him now? Probably cause this is his last contract and staying for a team like the cubs isn't getting him anywhere. He's only getting money out of it with probably not competing anytime soon.
  4. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 5, 2014 -> 10:33 AM) I don't understand wanting to downgrade your average at best defense every day, to acquire a guy who might be able to help you 1 every 5 days for one season. Cause again being back in home area and playing for a contender might help him decide to sign extension. He's already said if he were to become a free agent in 2015 he would definitely like to talk about coming back to Chicago. Being that the cubs are still in rebuild mode that's leaves a possible spot to the sox. Plus it gives a chance to see what we have in semien, sanchez , saladino plus. We haven't hardly seen any of them play ss cause alexei is there about every day
  5. Here is a hypothetical trade idea. 3 team trade with dodgers, white sox and Oakland. Based of trade would be alexei going to dodgers, Erisbel Arruebarruena going to Oakland and Samardzija going to white sox. Maybe other lower level pieces involved. Oakland gets a controlled defensive shortstop tho his offense still needs work. White sox swap the 10 million would be paid to alexei turns over to samardzija with out raising payroll and still have enough to get say melky and bullpen pieces. Dodgers get Alexei who helps them now.
  6. Ya I don't want cespedes. Seems like a slightly better viciedo to me. Plus he's only for one year. Would rather spend the same money on melky. Boston is going to be looking for pitching in the return for him. I heard something about Boston talking to Detroit for porcello/ cespedes deal.
  7. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 4, 2014 -> 07:41 PM) The A's are either rebuilding on they're not. If they trade Samardzija, they pretty much have no choice but to rebuild the next couple of seasons. At least that's the signal they're sending. I also don't believe the Indians with their Swisher/Bourne experiences are going to be so quick to take on another "bigger" contract who's only under team control for 2 more years. That's the opposite of the Indians' normal style of locking up those players like Santana and Kipnis into their first or second FA years. With their young pitchers, their best window of opportunity is 2016-2018, just like the White Sox. Just because they trade Samardzija doesn't mean they are rebuilding. They have starting pitchers coming back that were injured last year to fill in Samardzija spot thats cheaper. They have Sonny Gray, Kendall Graveman, AJ griffin, Jesse chavez, Scott Kazmir, Jarod Parker and Drew Pomeranz. Thats way more depth then the sox have and better pitchers then some of what the sox have. They trade Samardzija and shed salary and get more players back to fill in other places. Thats the whole point of money ball is to replace expensive players with cheaper players and try to get the same production. They trade players who get expensive in arbitration or going to leave for free agency and get a bunch of players in return along with drafting. Its the opposite with what kenny williams did over the the years. Kenny traded what ever prospects the sox had for expensive veterans which is the reason the farm system was so bad. tho you also have to mix in bad scouting in drafts. You have to blend drafting, trading players you aren't going to be able to keep for prospects and free agency which is what Hahn has been doing over the last year and half till now.
  8. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 4, 2014 -> 07:19 PM) Is Moss really going to be any better than Michael Morse, Torii Hunter or even Dayan Viciedo in the OF? Can the A's afford to part with even more offense with Donaldson a near-MVP talent as well as Cespedes gone? If there's one thing that's certain, it's that we shouldn't be worsening a defense with any acquisition we make. Now that's hard to do in the case of LF, but Moss isn't going to be a Rasmus or even on par with Markakis/DeAza/Aoki out there. Again he's going to make up to 7 million for 2015 in his second year of arbitration. Thats up from 4 million in 2014. Also just had hip surgery. Going to trade him to save money to reinvest back into team and get more players back.
  9. Dan Hayes Don't think it pertains to names reported earlier, but #WhiteSox have $$ for a big deal if the fit is just right. http://t.co/OatnxnhDwJ https://twitter.com/CSNHayes/status/540636934846963713
  10. If this is accurate then might be scratching any thoughts of headley Jeff passan Sources: Clubs being told Chase Headley has a four-year offer for ~$65M. @JonHeymanCBS says Marlins interested. Unclear if that's the team. https://twitter.com/JeffPassan/status/540579259996061696
  11. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Dec 4, 2014 -> 09:54 AM) he is not doing anything until Lester signs. I think at the end of the day one goes to Boston the other New York. Dodgers are now in for lester so it will be a bidding match vs boston. Ryu has been getting injured the last 2 yrs and with Grienke possible hitting free agency in 2016.
  12. Jon Heyman improving chisox need righty SP & have contacted all, from Max down. MS a long shot but many choices http://t.co/UqodjfYYIc https://twitter.com/JonHeymanCBS/status/540526188582948864
  13. QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 02:56 PM) The payroll is already at about $80M now, right? So he expects out payroll to remain the same as it was last season? I would have thought Hahn would add to the payroll. Hayes said with arbitration and viciedo staying for now payroll being at about 72 million. That should be with the additions of duke and Laroche. Remember payroll was below 50 ish before arbitration and add in arbitration was up to about 56 ish. Add in Laroche 12 million and 4.5 for duke and at about 72 ish. Said maybe going up to 95 million maybe. http://www.csnchicago.com/video_content_ty...x-after-laroche
  14. QUOTE (oldsox @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 05:09 PM) Read something that Baltimore is inquiring about Kemp since they lost Cruz. Jon Heyman icymi: padres, mariners, o's have talked kemp, but o's said to be "nowhere" & impediments exist. http://t.co/SzbsZdmEiT https://twitter.com/JonHeymanCBS/status/540237340313399296
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 09:44 AM) And if Beane was willing to trade Donaldson for that reason, I'd have been willing to put together a better package than what he got if I were the White Sox GM. Everything in our system other than Rodon,Abreu,Sale, and Q would have been on the table. Hell, you might well have gotten me talking about Q. How do you know that was a bad deal for Donaldson. Beane and company is pretty good at seeing something in players and making something of them. They generally always have good pitching. I saw some where that the pitcher graveman they got should slide right into the rotation next year. If you look at his stats he went from A ball to A+, AA, AAA and the majors last year. The ss prospect was pretty good and Brett Lawrie has had a very high ceiling but has been hurt. Beane is banking on getting him off the turf from Toronto and thinking that should keep him healthy and contributing.
  16. QUOTE (LDF @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 09:37 AM) you are very much right, but Lester is an elite pitcher. that is the selling point. One is only giving up money for him. If you get a guy that you can get with only money and don't have to give up a first pick for then you get other teams involved. The Giants are supposedly involved now but they might not have been if he had a qualifying offer. Same goes for the White sox in jose abreu. They only had to give up money for not a pick too. I bet if he had a pick attached to him the white sox wouldn't have bid as high.
  17. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 09:22 AM) There's no reason for the A's to trade Samardzija if they're not getting a high level talent back. A team in competition this year should be willing to give up a top prospect in exchange for a season of a pitcher who put up 4 WAR last year. There's no reason for Beane to accept less than a high level talent. Certainly not as high as what he gave up to get Samardzija, but still a very high level guy. Of course, there was no reason for him to give up Donaldson for the weak haul he got, so maybe the White Sox could get a steal here and maybe that's why they were in this conversation in the first place, but "assuming Billy Beane doesn't make another silly move" seems like a reasonable standard from my POV. Again the reason I believe Donaldson was traded was because he was going to get very expensive in arbitration. Beane wasn't ever going to lock him up so trade him now for prospects and use the money saved to invest back into team. Beane has to make every sent count with their payroll. It's going to be the same in trading samardzija. He gets to skip paying 10 million to him in 2015 and gets younger cost controlled prospects back. He does this all the time if someone is getting close to free agency or going to get expensive in arbitration.
  18. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 09:14 AM) There's a fairly strong precedent that shows that draft pick compensation affects the price of low-end free agents drastically, but doesn't affect the price of high-end free agents much at all. And it makes sense the more you think about it There isn't low end free agents getting compensation picks. It's really only the high end free agents getting compensation picks. 12 players got qualifying offers in 2014 were Max Scherzer, Victor Martinez, Russell Martin, Francisco Liriano, Hanley Ramirez, Nelson Cruz, James Shields, David Robertson, Melky Cabrera, Ervin Santana, Michael Cuddyer, and Pablo Sandoval. Those are high end free agents. Only other free agents that are higher end didn't get the qualifying offer is either traded during the season or were on options and team/player declined them.
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 09:05 AM) I'd prefer a deal like that with Lester to trading Anderson for Samardzija and extending him at anything close to 5/$100. The money's higher but if you're paying 9 figures to a pitcher anyway...Lester's a better pitcher and you don't have to trade away something to get him. Of course, given the option I wouldn't spend 9 figures on a pitcher at all. Bad enough if the white sox have to compete against a better probably offer from Boston for Samardzija then it would be even worse money wise to compete against them for lester. Boston I think is going to go all out getting lester back.
  20. QUOTE (LDF @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 08:59 AM) interesting, do you know what is salary demands??? also wanting and getting is two different things. btw, he will prob get it. Only thing I saw in him was possibly the years. Haven't seen much on santana sofar.
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 08:55 AM) Wait, you're right, Lester would not receive compensation, forgot about him being traded. Because lester doesn't have a compensation pick his price will get really. I think his highest offer sofar is 6 yrs 138 million by cubs. Jon Heyman says don't be surprised if he gets up to 150 million.
  22. QUOTE (LDF @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 08:49 AM) ok, i said i was not going to bring this up, but i have too. if the sox has to give up a group of major prospects, plus do a contract extension, i would sign Jon Lester. another option may be Ervin Santana. i would like to know what his terms would be. Buster Olney tweeted this the other day on ervin santana. Figure santana will be Turing 32 in December. Not surprisingly, Ervin Santana looking for as long of a deal as possible: Five years. https://twitter.com/Buster_ESPN/status/539886337575616512
  23. QUOTE (Lillian @ Dec 3, 2014 -> 08:07 AM) We've all been exploring lots of options to fill the hole in one corner outfield. The Dodgers still match up best for a trade with Sox. Having just acquired another outfielder, Chris Heisey, who is a true centerfielder, L. A. now has 7 outfielders, on their roster. They still need a SS, and consider Alexei a suitable candidate to fill that void. Therefore, I think that remains the most logical move. The question is: Which outfielder, and what terms, are most realistic and desirable? Although most of us would prefer one of the younger guys, such as Van Slyke, or even Pederson, someone like Ethier or Kemp is probably more realistic. So, we're back to salary relief included in a deal involving Alexei for Ethier or Kemp. Old "news" of course, but I just thought it was worth revisiting. Dodgers have 9 outfielders on their roster. Crawford, Heisey, Kemp, Schebler, Van Slyke, Ethier, Pederson, Jensen, and puig.
  24. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 12:40 PM) I am in full agreement. They can also exclusively negotiate with Samardzija at that point and they may view the cost-value of Samardzija to be less prohibitive than that of Hamels, Latos, or Cueto. Who knows for sure. Also, Leake strikes me as a 3/4 starter in the AL, not nearly as good as Hamels, Latos, Cueto, or Samardzija. Not saying they wouldn't or shouldn't have interest, but it doesn't strike me as the guy they'd want. Ultimately, Samardzija is going to want money. There is virtually no where in the United States (or Toronto) that these guys wouldn't play if you paid them enough. I also don't think the A's traded Donaldson because he was getting expensive considering they just signed Billy Butler to a 3/$30 deal. This is not about Samardzija making too much. This is about extracting more future value out of Samardzija then he will currently give them. $20 million per year over 5 years is too expensive for the A's though. Yes samardzija is going to want money but it is his choice of where he would prefer to get it at. Just because a team like Boston can offer more money doesn't mean he wants to be there. If all he cares about money then he signs with the highest bidder. If he looking at something else then he will forgo money from a team to play somewhere else. I guarantee that a player has turned down more money to play with a team he prefers. I do believe the expensiveness of Donaldson and the chance of getting more players at cost controlled terms is what Beane did the trade. Donaldson is in his first year of arbitration. He made $500,000 in 14 and based on mlb trade rumor arbitration projections he going to get 4 million more in 2015. Lawrie is also in arbitration eligible in 2015 and projected to get 1.8 million. They saved 2.7 million in swapping Donaldson for Lawrie and got 2 pitchers and a possible good ss prospect. Samardzija who they won't lock up is going to get about 10 million in arbitration. If Beane trades samardzija and gets prospects back he now saves the 10 million he would have spent for the year on samardzija which now equals butlers 2015 money.
  25. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Dec 2, 2014 -> 12:07 PM) Boston has the money to lock anyone up if they choose. Losing Samardzija will net a high draft pick if he leaves so that is also a chip for Beane. Boston could try to lock him up but he may not want to be there and just leave for free agency. Yes the high draft pick compensation for Beane is enticing but that means they have to keep him on the roster the whole year and pay him about 10 million. If they traded Donaldson cause he will get expensive do you really think they want to spend an extra 10 million on samardzija.
