  1. The Kennedy contract has future albatross written all over it. If Kennedy doesn't pitch up to expectations and decides not to opt-out, the Royals will be stuck like pigs.
  2. QUOTE (bear_brian @ Jan 27, 2016 -> 09:52 AM) Anyway you cut it, this guy made 27 errors last year and 24 the year before that. Alexei made 16 last year, just for comparison. He is not a reliable defender, and therefore not what we need to resolve our problem. More and more I am beginning to believe that either Ethier or Jay Bruce is the best available OF answer, and we stick with Saladino at SS. And that is assuming that : a) we get the Dodgers to eat some money for Ethier; and b) we give up the likes of no more than a Guerrero or Phillips. We could keep Avi to platoon DH with LaRoche. You kind of make my point by bringing Alexei into the discussion. Alexei's RngR and UZR are considerably worse than Desmond's so less errors are going to happen when a player cannot get to as many balls in play. Desmond had 9 throwing errors last season and Alexei had 10. I think Desmond's capability of getting to more balls in play than Alexei led to some additional errors made by Desmond, at least to some extent. I'm not saying Desmond is a good SS but I'm not saying he is bad either. His defensive numbers are just plain weird to me. I'm definitely up for the idea of Ethier since upgrading the OF is a bigger necessity than SS. Jay Bruce on the other hand comes with the same question marks as Desmond so I can't see how someone would be against Desmond and yet be fine with Bruce. Bruce took a few steps back last year defensively, much like Desmond.
  3. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 27, 2016 -> 09:25 AM) Can someone please post the drs and uzr and range factor numbers for Desmond? He was terrible offensively and defensively the first 2-3 months last year but it doesn't fit at all with his career numbers in those two areas. Most of it has been attributed to the stress and pressure of rejecting a 7 year, $107 million contract extension. Not to mention the Nationals have been better judges of offensive talent than the Sox, they can't be totally wrong about a player who spent his entire career there and is still just 30. Here's Desmond's 2015 numbers: DRS 1, UZR -3.7, RngR 4.5 according to fangraphs http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playe...amp;position=SS BR has Desmond's RF/9 4.26 and RF/G 4.15 http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/desmoia01.shtml Interestingly enough Desmond had 18 fielding errors and 9 throwing errors in '15. I wonder if his extended range led to more errors since his range enabled him to get to more balls that would have been base hits for the average range SS.
  4. I found this to be very interesting. Apparently Tyler's uncle, Doug Saladino, was a skater in the 70's/80's. In this article Doug explains the family heritage speaking about his parents ( Tyler's grand parents). http://juicemagazine.com/home/doug-pineapple-saladino/ So yes, Tyler indeed has Phillipene roots. His last name always struck me as being Italian so I learned something new today.
  5. QUOTE (Al Lopez's Ghost @ Jan 26, 2016 -> 10:18 PM) That would be fair - Garcia has exhausted me, and my patience. Ya, Avi's hitting and fielding isn't very easy on the eyes. Quite painful really. Like whiping with sand paper on the loo.
  6. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 26, 2016 -> 09:51 PM) Will just state that there's no way that Desmond will end up under $10 million IMO... Would definitely put him in the $13-17 million range. From 2012-2014, he was a consistent 3.5 war guy, which is about where everyone assumed Cespedes would be THIS season. 3.5 X $7-8 million value for WAR on FA market=$26.25 million. Even if you go with last year's terribly disappointing year, you're talking $14 million and change valuing him at a 2 WAR. Plus he plays a premium position in SS. And is only 30. Desmond does play a premium position but there's less than a handful of teams in need of a SS, hes coming off his worst season, has been declining on offense and defense for 3 straight years and he has a comp pick attached to him. He won't get anywhere near 17M. Imo, 12-14M is more like it. Edit: to be fair. Desmond did have a pretty decent second half in '15 so he does have that going for him.
  7. http://www.latinpost.com/articles/111051/2...d-athletics.htm Sounds like Oakland and Reddick are on the same page.
  8. QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Jan 26, 2016 -> 09:23 PM) I'd sign Desmond to a one year deal with an option for a second. He doesn't have a ton of interest and it's getting close to spring training. He will sign some kind of prove it deal. Doesn't mean it's going to be a one year $4 million deal but I could see it anywhere from 8-13 million on one year. That would give Anderson another year to develop and not rush things. Desmond's potential bat could give us a formidable hitting infield. That could be big time power potential infield. Abreu, Frazier, Desmond and Lawrie. An option year would make losing the pick a little more worth while and buys Anderson up to an additional year of development if needed. If Anderson shows he's ready by the end of the '16 season then the Sox can exercise Desmond's option for '17 and trade him next winter or keep him and convert Anderson to CF. I'm to the point now where if the Sox cannot find the right fit for an outfielder then go ahead and sign Desmond.
  9. As much as I like Reddick, which is alot, I wouldn't trade for him based on him being a one year rental.
  10. QUOTE (Baron @ Jan 26, 2016 -> 07:05 PM) Like I said in the thread with that article it is actually pretty generous. He doesnt have near good enough defense or the offense to make up for that deficiency. If you actually argue with Scott he just repeats one year and you'll see. Lol, sounds like something Hawk would say.
  11. These guys are reporting what has been written about for the last few days or more.
  12. No kidding. I remember Abe from Barney Miller and Fish. RIP Abe.
  13. http://www.foxsports.com/mlb/story/ian-des...aft-pick-012516 Rosenthal mentions how the Sox could be a fit for Desmond/Fowler. Nothing really new here, but a nice write-up to read while the lack of Sox rumors bores me to tears.
  14. QUOTE (blackmooncreeping @ Jan 26, 2016 -> 12:45 PM) Yep, agreed. We can either ask for $$ coming back in the deal, or somehow get the Dodgers to include Laroche. Seems like this deal almost makes too much sense for both clubs and I'd be surprised if it isn't being discussed...at least the Either part of it, and figure out the details later. I wouldn't count on the LaRoche idea. Even though the Dodgers can afford it, I doubt they would be willing to pay LaRoche 13M to sit on the bench and hold Adrien Gonzalez's jock. I think Avi/Lowry for Ethier is pretty close as it is. I wasn't sure if the Dodgers would have interest in Avi but they could turn him into a platoon partner for Crawford in LF I suppose.
  15. QUOTE (blackmooncreeping @ Jan 26, 2016 -> 12:34 PM) I'd do this trade in 2 seconds if I'm the Sox. Not sure how the $$ would work itself out though... In that proposal the Sox take on all of Ethier's contract. It's why the Sox wouldn't be giving up much. If the Sox ask for money with Ethier then the Dodgers will want a better return. I think Ethier is a very realistic possibility for the Sox.
  16. QUOTE (SoCalSox @ Jan 26, 2016 -> 12:26 PM) Fowler would make a ton of sense for this team. If he didn't have a pick attached, I feel like most fans would be pounding the table for him right now, personally. Can probably get him on a 3 year deal at $11-13M AAV. Agreed, I think the pick is a hangup for many of us fans and its why I'm on the fence with Fowler. I guess one way to look at it would be Samardzija turned into a comp pick and the Sox could could turn the comp pick into Fowler who should help the Sox more than Samardzija did.
  17. I would be game for this trade idea. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2610885...culation/page/5
  18. I wouldn't trade Fulmer but if for some reason the Sox signed Desmond to a multi-year contract I would be willing to trade Anderson for his OF minor league equivalent or for young team controlled players like Ender Inciarte or Preston Tucker.
  19. I'd like to see the Sox take a run at Andrew Aplin in Houston. Aplin has so many outfielders ahead of him he likely plays again in AAA for the Astros in '16. LH OF bat that walks more than strikes out. Could slot well at #2 in the lineup. Mostly played CF with some RF too last year.
  20. QUOTE (southside hitman @ Jan 26, 2016 -> 09:55 AM) Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal 4m4 minutes ago Some in game sense Dickerson will be OFer #Rockies trade. Will require less of return than Blackmon. #Rays involved, as @TBTimes_Rays said. Why would Rockies trade Dickerson and why would he fetch less than Blackmon? Dickerson is younger, under club control for longer, and is a better hitter. Am I missing something here? EDIT: I see he was injured most of last year. Still, if he stays healthy, he was on a monstrous pace. Ya, Dickerson is the Rockies OF I'd prefer but his plantar fasciitis could be a big problem for an outfielder. It sure did raise some hell on Gillaspie and he was just a 3B.
  21. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jan 26, 2016 -> 09:41 AM) He can't be traded until June due to accepting the QO. Rasmus can be traded before June 15th but the Astros need his permission to do so. Doubtful Rasmus would give that permission so he's probably not going anywhere.
  22. Desmond, Latos and OF trade. I'd prefer Hernandez over an OF trade but I'm thinking there will be quite a few teams interested so the Sox will have some competition, assuming of course the Sox are interested.
  23. The cubs have a solid rotation 1-5 but I would still say the Mets have the best rotation and should be #1.
