QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Jan 29, 2016 -> 09:58 AM) Yes, and his stats in that limited sample size were horrific. I'm not counting that either way. That's the thing, its a limited sample size so lets see what he can do playing 2B everyday instead of bouncing him around like Oakland did. I will say that Lawrie does grade much better defensively at 3B but that's also where he has the most experience. Personally, I'd rather have Lawrie at 3B but Frazier is there so the only other place for Lawrie is 2B. RV did say that he likes Lawrie's versatility and could spell Frazier at 3B with Frazier at DH for rest which puts Sanchez at second in those games. I don't like the idea of bouncing a guy around but I'm not the manager either.
-
QUOTE (Hatchetman @ Jan 29, 2016 -> 09:49 AM) Lawrie hasn't played 2B full time since 2010 in AA. I think it is a huge risk. Lawrie started 40 games at 2B for Oakland in '15.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 29, 2016 -> 09:46 AM) Yea but when Rogers writes about a trade it is usually straight from fantasy land While this is true, I think the idea of the Rays trading Desmond is at least possible. Not saying it will happen but Rogers is right when he says the Rays have too many outfielders and trading Jennings makes the most sense.
-
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jan 29, 2016 -> 09:42 AM) I disagree that Lawrie isn't an upgrade. They wanted to fix the offense. He's a worse defender than Sanchez but he's a better offensive player. Yep and Lawrie has a stronger arm than Sanchez which should come in handy turning double plays.
-
QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jan 29, 2016 -> 09:32 AM) Desmond Jennings for Petricka would be an excellent move for White Sox. Could Jennings push Eaton to a corner and play CF? According to fangraphs, Jennings grades about the same in CF and LF, both of which are better than Eaton so Jennings would upgrade CF. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jan 29, 2016 -> 09:35 AM) It's Phil Rogers though. I'd almost rather it be from Levine. I don't mind Rogers but Levine, just can't stand the guy. To me it seems like if Levine writes about a possible trade, its the kiss of death and likely won t happen.

http://m.mlb.com/news/article/163105904/co...es-rays-options Just curious how people feel about the idea since it was mentioned in an MLB.com article and by someone not named Levine. Not particularly fond of the idea due to Desmond's injuries and his offensive numbers leave something to be desired. That said, there's no doubt he would upgrade the defense and his offense seems to be somewhat on par with Austin Jackson, whom I am open to, so to be fair, I should be open to the idea of Jennings. Jennings last year of arbitration is 2017 so he comes with two seasons worth of team control. Anyone open to the idea? Suggestions as to which inexpensive Sox reliever the Rays could be interested in? Maybe a Jennings for Jennings swap?
-
Back to the trade. I wonder if the Rockies might be thinking of using McGee as a closer to build his value and flip him at the deadline. McGee would become quite valuable as a cheap closer with 1.5 years of team control left by the time late July rolls around. Just a thought.

Ventura: "White Sox have potential to be dangerous"

QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Jan 28, 2016 -> 10:34 PM) Which shows you just how bad we were at season's end, because we are still below average at four of nine positions in the potential starting line-up with Garcia, Cabrera, LaRoche and Salidino in starting positions. Ya man, doubt they were at seasons end. I think Saladino gets a pass due to his youth and defense. I know I'll come across as a FO sympathiser but there really was just too many positions to fill for one off season. To be honest, I think they did better than I anticipated. Didn't expect upgrades as good as Frazier and Lawrie. I admit, I had low expectations. -
QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 28, 2016 -> 10:31 PM) Just going off fWAR OK. I was looking at the usual suspects like OBP, OPS etc.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 28, 2016 -> 10:00 PM) He was better than Fowler prior to last years injuries Not trying to be a wise-ass but can you be specific as to how he was better? I really don't see it, aside from Jennings be the better defensive outfielder.

QUOTE (bear_brian @ Jan 28, 2016 -> 10:04 PM) You could also look at the facts that it might be impossible for LaRoche to be any worse than he was last year, that Melky should be better, that Rodon can and should continue to improve, that we won't have Samardzija stinking up the place every fifth day, that we will hopefully have both Nate Jones and Albers for the full season, that we have almost no one who might regress, and there is indeed hope ... at least for now. Goods points and could not agree with you more. Too many fans are focused on what did not or has not happened yet instead taking a few steps back to see what has actually been accomplished so far. The Sox are in a much better place than they were at seasons end. -

Ventura Confirmed Interest in Cespedes/Gordon

QUOTE (CyAcosta41 @ Jan 28, 2016 -> 09:00 PM) Agreed. We've strengthened many of our weaknesses from last year. Sometimes the effect can be geometric rather than straight arithmetic. Some people call this chemistry. Agreed also ... while I think they are tone deaf for not getting this done immediately before or during SoxFest (and I'll hold out hope that this is still possible), I'd bet any of Greg's remaining houses that there is an OF'er still to come (my preferences in order are Fowler over Jackson, but at least a Raburn type to make sure LaRoche keeps his seat on the bench against ALL LH'ers forever). But dude, DISAGREE ... the Villagers didn't storm the Castle against Count anyone. Count Dracula would have made short work of that. They stormed Baron Frankenstein's castle, and not so much looking for Baron Frankenstein, but Frankenstein's monster. Agreed: from what I've read Frazier, Lawrie,Avila and possibly Navarro are good club house guys so the atmosphere of the club house should be improved. Agreed also: I'm with you on the Fowler idea and still think an outfielder will be added somehow. It may not be Fowler but I think one will be added nonetheless. I still believe that a trade is possible although it won't be for a player such as CarGo. DISAGREE: Who do you think you are? Cy Vincent Van Helsing? -
I'd much rather pay Fowler than trade for Jennings. I can only hope the Sox aren't interested in Jennings.

Ventura: "White Sox have potential to be dangerous"

I agree with RV and have no problem with what he said. Frazier is a huge upgrade at 3B, Lawrie's bat is a sizeable upgrade at 2B with nice power potential and Avila/Navarro are sizeable upgrades at catcher. 3B and Catcher got better defensively and while I don't expect Lawrie to be as slick as Sanchez with the glove at 2B but Lawrie's arm is a big upgrade to that position. Saladino should be a defensive upgrade at SS so the infield overall should much improved defensively and in the batting lineup as well. All I'm saying is that the Sox look much better now than they did at seasons end. Unless of course fans prefered to go with revolving doors at 3B and 2B with Flowers at catcher and an aging/declining Alexei at SS. -
Ventura Confirmed Interest in Cespedes/Gordon

QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 28, 2016 -> 08:16 PM) Sox not being competitive last year hurt in so many ways. There weren't supposed to be so many holes for 2016, but Hahn wasted a ton of money last offseason on players you wish weren't in the organization. Agreed. Going into the off season the Sox had positional holes at RF, DH, 2B, 3B, SS and C. That's two thirds of the lineup. Half of those holes have been filled so some progress has been made. I'd like to see if the Sox make any more additions before I light my torch and prepare to storm Castle US Cellular to slay Count Reinsdorf. -

Ventura Confirmed Interest in Cespedes/Gordon

Gordon wanted to stay in KC, Cespedes wanted to stay in NY and Upton supposedly wasn't interested in the Sox. You can't force players to sign where they don't want to be. Sox fans just need to accept it and move on. -
QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 28, 2016 -> 05:28 PM) Rockies got German Marquez, nothing special #25 on Rays prospect list. Agreed, nothing special. I think the return the Rockies got just goes to show the limited value Dickerson has due to the plantar fasciitis.

https://mobile.twitter.com/Brewers?ref_src=...7Ctwgr%5Eauthor Done deal for the Brewers. I forget who but someone speculated Liriano wouldn't make it through the NL waivers for the Sox to get a chance. Good call.

QUOTE (bear_brian @ Jan 28, 2016 -> 04:53 PM) Look, I am no Avi supporter, but it is bothersome to read what seems to be a real hatred for the guy. Last year was the first time in his very brief major league career that he has over 200 AB's. Did he do well? No. Was he poor defensively? Absolutely. Is he an irretrievable lost cause? At this point I don't know, and I am not sure any professional baseball person really knows either. He certainly was considered a great catch when we acquired him. He was overweight, he gained weight during the season, he frustrated Ventura, he botched plays in the outfield, he looked abysmal at times at the plate. But ... he is only 24 years old, with really what amounts to one full season as a starter. There are many, many star big leaguers who looked as bad - Lou Brock comes to my mind. The Cubs got rid of him in what was probably one of the worst baseball trades ever made. Avi had a great start to the season, then fell off a cliff. Maybe that's all he is. But giving him another year - if Hahn cannot find a reasonable alternative - may not be the end of the world. That's all I'm saying ... let the naysayers come! Nobody has said they " hate " Avi. Just that they want to see the Sox improve the outfield and lets face it, Avi is the weakest link. Taking some digs and poking some fun at Avi is not hating Avi, just expressing some disgust with his bat and glove.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 28, 2016 -> 04:30 PM) Yeah, but they're not gonna win anything. Why trade a good piece like Dickerson for something you have no need for ATM? There's gotta be a subsequent deal to this. Rosenthal mentioned the Rays will save 4M because of this trade so maybe the Rockies took McGee and his salary to get better pitcher prospects for Dickerson. Hard to judge this trade without knowing the rest of the package the Rockies are getting.

I will be watching/ listening/following every game just as I always have for many years now. Why? Because I'm a Sox fan and there's a case to be made for me being a sucker too. Such is the life of a humble Sox fan.

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jan 28, 2016 -> 04:13 PM) I could see Loney potentially moved too. Yep, Tampa is rumored to be looking to trade Loney. Read it a few days ago, somewhere.
