"The Jays felt that both Revere and Michael Saunders were “everyday players,” and while they didn’t mind having depth in the outfield (with Revere and Saunders potentially joining a group of outfielders that included Jose Bautista, Kevin Pillar and Dalton Pompey), they felt they could deal an outfielder for additional pitching." http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/01/blue...a-saunders.html The Jays supposedly being content with their outfielders + the rumor they are looking/willing to move Dickey + an extremely small market for Davis makes me think they go after Davis to bolster an already powerful lineup while weakening a division opponent. Then again, maybe I'm looking to much into it out of sheer bordome.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 9, 2016 -> 02:05 PM) You know what they are offering how? And if it is take it or leave it like you said, why isn't being reported they are out, because obviously it wasn't taken. The answer to your second question is last season. Robertson was the top closer on the market. Milky turned down 4 years from KC for 3 with the Sox. Just saw your post DA. Not trying to copycat you.

QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Jan 9, 2016 -> 01:57 PM) Boras pitching Davis as a regular Corner OF: https://t.co/AB8woKXQMU I think Boras is really reaching on this, especially for a market flooded with real outfielders and shows, imo, how desperate Boras/Davis are getting due to the lack of teams interested and their stupidity in turning down Baltimore's offer.

QUOTE (Big Hurtin @ Jan 9, 2016 -> 02:01 PM) I don't believe they are truly negotiating. They are offering the least with a take it or leave it attitude. It only serves to let the gullible fans believe they tried. When was the last time the White Sox won on an in-demand free agent? Gullible, really? Kind of ironic considering you're taking the media at their word that the Sox are sticking to three year offers on free agent's that have yet to receive more than three year offers. To answer your question: last year when the Sox signed Robertson to a four year deal that, at the time, was considered to be alot of money for a closer.

QUOTE (Saufley @ Jan 9, 2016 -> 01:39 PM) '' I tend to believe the future is now and I hope we get a Cespedes signing for 2016 and a few years beyond. I've sat by for too many seasons and at the end have had to say "wait until next year". Nothing is a guaranty, even the future. Definitely. Would like to see the Sox get an outfielder that will be around for the next 3-4 years. Hopefully Cespedes or Upton come to their senses and meet the Sox half way on a 4 year deal.

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Jan 9, 2016 -> 01:05 PM) That was my point. Samardzija greatly underperformed but still got a major payday. Compare that to Span, whose injury cost him a lot more money. Two different markets. The length of contracts, the money pitchers signed for and how quickly FA pitchers came off the board showed just how important pitching is and the Shelby Miller trade further backs that up. Pitching is still the premium. Span is an outfielder amount many many outfielders available. Another point is that before Samardzija's tough season in '15 he was speculated to get a contract north of 100M and instead settled for what the Cubs offered him last year in '14. Samardzija still got a nice contract but not what it could have been had he performed the way he had the two years prior to his '15 season. Imo, injuries and under performing both take away from a free agent's contract and money potential.

Ya, I don't understand the gloom and doom posts. The outfield market is flooded with talent and the Sox are in the thick of it all. Hahn will upgrade the outfield, fans just need to be patient and keep their knickers from twisting. Just because nothing is done yet does not mean something won't be done. Good grief.

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Jan 9, 2016 -> 12:44 PM) The risk is more with injury than underperforming, just look at Samardzija. Samardzija wasn't injured though, he under performed. I do agree with you though, injury is also part of the risk and a good point. If Upton and his agent aren't interested in a one year deal which I believe to be true, then they might have to accept the fact that it's better to accept a 3/4 year deal which still puts Upton back on the market at age 31/32 to get another big contract. Imo, that's a better alternative for Upton than getting 5 or 6 years. If Upton begins to regress before that 5/6 year deal is up he be age 33/34 and it will cost him in free agency when the contract is over but if he accepts a 3/4 year deal and performs, he can still get a very good contract that will cover the ages many players begin their regression. Upton not being interested in a 3/4 year deal only makes sense if he thinks he can get something like a 7/8 year contract that would cover to his age 35/36. If he thinks he can get that then I wish him well and good luck with that bud.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jan 9, 2016 -> 12:15 PM) I agree, a one year deal with Upton should be a last resort. Puts us in the same spot next year, but without the benefit of a ton of OF options. Exactly. No need to rinse and repeat next winter. Would rather secure an outfield spot for the next 3 or 4 years. Hopefully by the time Melky is a FA, one of Jacob May or Adam Engel is ready otherwise the Sox will have money to spend during the '17/'18 off season that should have plenty of outfielders available.

What is the Sox fall back OF plan ?

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jan 9, 2016 -> 12:29 PM) Sox will have to play Melky in RF if they sign Cespedes too True but its been rumored the Sox are interested in using Cespedes in RF. Not sure if there's any truth to that rumor, just some food for thought. -
QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Jan 9, 2016 -> 11:53 AM) Or even a 1-year deal. Upton can take one and then become a free agent at 29 in a weak class. I think it's a gamble with a double edged sword. On one side, if Upton performs as usual then he should hit paydirt next winter but if he under-performs he lowers his value. I'm probably in the minority on this but I don't have interest in Upton for a 1 year deal, he either accepts a 3/4 year deal or f*** him and move on to someone else. Don't get me wrong, I'd like to see Upton in a Sox uni, just not for merely one season. There's just too many options available to give into his demands, he can either meet the Sox half way or he can piss off.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 9, 2016 -> 10:07 AM) No way you get K.Davis for less than Anderson/Fulmer though... The articles are all intimating the return would be higher in July because there's such a glut right now. I agree with waiting until the deadline, especially for a cost controlled player such as Khris Davis. I think Milwaukee waits until next winter to unload Braun and his contract when there's much less outfielders available. -
I think the agents of Cespedes and Upton need to keep in mind that there are more sellers than buyers so if they want to play games, let em. Plenty of alternatives to choose from on the trade market which is why those two players have yet to receive the offer they are looking for. In the end, Cespedes and Upton just might have to settle for a 3 or 4 year deal. The FA outfielders have such little bargaining power its amusing to me. Heyward and Gordon were smart for taking the deals they got.

QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Jan 9, 2016 -> 10:19 AM) Not sure what TOR is up to. I see the Revere trade as trading for the sake of opening up a spot in a crowded spot on the depth chart. However saw that RA Dicky may be available which leads me to believe they are looking to cut payroll. Either because they aren't comfortable at the spot they are at now or they are trying to add payroll and thus are looking at places to save. "Blue Jays making R.A. Dickey available? | HardballTalk" via http://TeamStre.am by Bleacher Report http://teamstre.am/1UEUFbW That's interesting. Many scenarios can come from this. The article does say Toronto could be looking to move Dickey to make room for Sanchez. If Toronto moves Dickey to put Sanchez in the rotation, they could combine that savings with what they may have in the kity ( payroll at 130M) to sign Davis and give that right handed power heavy lineup more power from the left side. Another possibility would from trading Dickey would be to sign Chen. IMHO, Toronto would move Dickey to make room for Sanchez ( forgot he's just 23) and try to sign Davis. With Sanchez being a mere 23 and healthy, there's no reason to give up on him as a starter. Sanchez had a 3.55ERA in 11 starts for Toronto in '15 so I'd guess they look to make room for him and sign Davis. Not saying that's what will happen, just a guess.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 9, 2016 -> 10:24 AM) What does not really mean exactly? They checked in but were discouraged by the asking price? Sounds like hedging bets to cover if they do sign a bigger name. I've been suspecting they might be out on Cespedes/Upton/Gordon due to the Angels high payroll. If the Angels signed Cespedes or Upton, it would push the Angels payroll to the edge of the luxury tax threshold which wouldn't allow them any room for mid-season acquisitions without potentially going over. They have gone over in the last but the Angels seem bent on staying under to avoid the tax penalty. QUOTE (SouthSideSale @ Jan 9, 2016 -> 10:24 AM) Saw that. Wish they'd sign him already Seriously, somebody blink already! QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Jan 9, 2016 -> 10:25 AM) I feel the levee has to bust soon. There has been tons of movement this week and a lot of teams are either getting information which leads them to believe they are out on certain people or they themselves have said they are out on a certain player. Now this could be posturing and what not, but after the ardgeaous process of this market where handfuls of teams have been in on these players. But I believe the market is finally defining itself and teams have an idea where each guy may land. By this time next week I would be shocked if Cespy hasn't signed. Agreed, this has to burst soon. I think Hahn has a good idea of what teams are looking for and how much they are willing to spend. If a fan such as myself can dig up payroll's for teams, imagine how much more info Hahn has after having discussions with other GM's. I absolutely trust Hahn to get the upgrade the Sox need.

"MLB hot stove: Los Angeles Angels 'still not really involved' with Yoenis Cespedes, report says" http://www.nj.com/mets/index.ssf/2016/01/m...lly_involv.html Some potentially good news for Sox fans on cold, dreary Saturday morning.

It's going to be very interesting to see what Toronto does from here. I can see a case being made for them going after a SP or OF or 1B. Starting to think they become a big player for Davis.

BlackSox13 replied to CaliSoxFanViaSWside's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Khris Davis would be nice but he's only played LF in the majors which means the Sox would have to play Melky or Avi in RF. Braun would be a nice bat to add but only if the Sox weren't expected to give the few remaining top prospects they have left. -
QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 9, 2016 -> 09:16 AM) Didn't TOR largely just trade Revere for savings? Toronto's payroll sits at about 130M so they have money to burn. QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 9, 2016 -> 09:18 AM) Yuck, what an awful trade. Not really when we consider the Toronto rotation. Just a guess but I would imagine they will be relying on their pen quite a bit and Jays have a surplus of outfielders. Imo, it was a smart move by the Jays.

Trade targets: who is available and at what cost?
BlackSox13 replied to blackmooncreeping's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 8, 2016 -> 09:25 PM) Sure, if the Brewers, Reds, Rockies and Braves are in such desperate financial straits they starting selling off assets for 50 cents on the dollar....then it becomes interesting. Milwaukee is a strong revenue machine since the new stadium...even with disappointing teams. I'm just entertaining the idea is all. I really have no clue if the Brewers areneven interested in trading Braun. If it were up to me, I would keep him since there's too many outfielders on the market this winter. Better to wait until next winter when there's less somchoose from, assuming Braun stays healthy and produces he'd fetch a nice return in next year's market. But if for some reason the Brewers wanted to trade Braun this year, no way they get full value for him and especially since he's a right handed hitter, which the market is in no shortage of. Like I said, its just for entertainment purposes. -
I'm going to go with.. Davis to the Jays Upton to Baltimore Cespedes to the White Sox
-
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jan 8, 2016 -> 11:24 PM) Destined for the bullpen. I don't think he can start, dominant in the pen though. This is true but he adds depth to the rotation with being able to spot start which he did last year IIRC. Nevertheless, I agree he likely sits in the pen.
-
QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Jan 8, 2016 -> 11:17 PM) Yeah I'm coming around to the idea of them being a threat. Watch them shock everyone and sign Davis. All the homeruns. What's scary is they could use the power from the left side. Not to mention weaken a divisional opponent by taking 40+ home runs away from them and adding him to the Jays roster. I hadn't thought about a match between the Jays and Davis but now that you mention it, I think that idea makes more sense than the Jays going after one of Cespedes/Upton.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 8, 2016 -> 10:44 PM) Stroman Estrada Dickey Happ Hutchison Jesse Chavez Do they really need seven starters? Don't forget Aaron Sanchez.

QUOTE (blackmooncreeping @ Jan 8, 2016 -> 11:02 PM) Toronto would be better served to make a run at someone like Parra, and look for more pitching depth with the cash it would take for YC/JU. Parra would be a good compliment to a lineup that is full of mashers already imo, as they've got plenty of pop as is. You make a good point and IIRC, the Jays have plenty of RH power hitters. Parra could lead off for them or bat 2nd if they keep Pompey in CF. At this point, I won't rule them out on Cespedes/Upton simply due to them having the money. Just saying it could happen.
