Guyer is a career .274 hitter against LHP with an .824 OPS. This makes a lot of sense if they trade for Pederson.

I'll take the opposite approach. Think of how good these guys could be. Kopech: ace ceiling Dunning: really good #3 starter, maybe even #2 Madrigal: reminds people a lot of Jose Altuve Robert: superstar potential Collins: exceptional raw power and quality eye at the plate, should be a solid 1B/DH even if he doesn't stick at catcher Rutherford: solid skillset, should hopefully be a productive MLB player No need to be so gloom and doom.

Jon Jay isn't part of the future of this team. Anderson and Moncada are, so I think they should get as many at-bats as possible even if their OBP% is lower. That's my point.

Why does everyone have Jon Jay leading off in their mock lineups? He should not be getting more at-bats than Moncada or Anderson.

The Cespedes/Upton/Gordon offseason a couple years ago was annoying too but that pales in comparison to this. We're a good 2+ months in to these negotiations and there's still no end in sight. Just brutal.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Madrigal and one or two of the superfluous outfielders traded for a pitcher at some point. Especially if they get Machado.

In hindsight, the Nova trade looks like a massive overpay.

Why would either of them take a 1 year deal when they will get hundreds of millions of dollars now? They could get hurt at some point next season and never be the same. There is no point for either of these guys to bet on themselves and take a 1 year pillow deal. It's way too risky.

I would be more worried about the Padres if they hadn't signed Hosmer. It's hard to envision a relatively small market team having 2 massive contracts.
