Suit filed against Rumsfeld over prisoner abuses
LowerCaseRepublican replied to KipWellsFan's topic in SLaM
QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ Mar 2, 2005 -> 12:30 PM) Since when has the BBC been "allied" with the Bush administration? Hell, even the New York Times has been caught fabricating polling data that consistently favors Democrats over Republicans. Both are leftist, anti-Bush media outlets and are about as credible as Clinton's grand jury testimony. So, you'll have to forgive me for not believing that crap about US soldiers using the time, engery, and jail space to imprison an Iraqi for a traffic ticket. Yeah, I'll bet they're going to keep those promises. :rolly What this boils down to is, who do you trust - our imperfect government or the terrorist lowlives who were captured after attacking US soldiers? I'll have to side with our imperfect government on this one. Allied being UK media. Its state run media so I doubt they can get away with the same thing that a privately owned media firm could. Why do we have to trust either of them? Given the track record -- they're both groups of craven power-hungry bastards. I hate all the bichromatic, black and white "if you're not with us, you're with the terrorists" sort of crap. Like with the Red Scare of the 1950s, one can be against the tactics used by the government while also not agreeing with communism/terrorism. -

QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ Mar 2, 2005 -> 12:16 PM) Sure, if he's a US citizen, he's entitled to due process and the government is wrong. The terroists being held in Guantanamo, on the other hand, are not. The right to a "speedy trial" doesn't apply to them because... 1. They're not US citizens and aren't entitled to due process 2. They're not part of a recognized army and, therefore, are not protected by the Geneva Convention 3. The government probably has no plans to prosecute them. They're holding them for information and, after they're satisfied, they'll most likely release them. Some may see that as "dubious," but I see it another way: If you don't want to be held indefinitely in a military prison, don't commit terrorist attacks against US soldiers. Its dubious that the government can proclaim anybody a "preventative detention" detainee and off you go to the mystical land of no lawyers, no legal rights and secret military trials. The BBC even reported that most of the people being detained in Iraq were not "terrorists" but mostly people being held for minor offenses like not having the proper paperwork on them at a checkpoint, illegal parking, etc. etc. So yes, I do find it a bit dubious to label them all as terrorists when our own allied media is saying that they're not all terrorists. -

QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ Mar 2, 2005 -> 12:06 PM) You can't compare Jose Padilla, a US citizen who was wongly held in prison, to terrorists who are not protected by our Constitution or the Geneva Convention. He still is being held in prison. The US has 45 days to charge him with a crime or let him go. The ACLU is going after the whole concept of "preventative detention" since it is dubious legally. -

QUOTE(NUKE_CLEVELAND @ Mar 2, 2005 -> 11:56 AM) Probably not. I think its funny though that these people are trying to invent rights for people when they don't exist. They dont seem to understand that the only connection that terrorists rounded up in Afghanistan and Iraq have with the United States is that they were caught while engaged in combat with our soldiers. They have no rights under the Constitution and if I'm not mistaken they also have no rights under the Geneva convention since they are not part of any standing army or part of any government. Its nice legal pretzel twisting but it also refers to the people in the US who were picked up in "preventative detention" and have not been charged -- like Jose Padilla. 2 years in a cell with no charges filed against him or proof/evidence leveled against him. "Quick and speedy trial" ensured by the Constitution, eh? -

QUOTE(CubKilla @ Mar 2, 2005 -> 11:37 AM) Will this stop the ACLU from defending the rights of pro-pedophilic love organizations such as NAMBLA? Ah yes, the tell tale tactic of discrediting the messenger rather than focus on the meat and potatoes of the post -- being that the US is actively engaged in torture. -
No s*** they're pissed off about terrorism -- state terrorism or otherwise.

Books/stories that should be movies thread
LowerCaseRepublican replied to sox4lifeinPA's topic in SLaM
I'd like to see "Survivor" by Chuck Palahniuk made into a movie (he's the guy who wrote "Fight Club". Basically, the main character is part of this apocalyptic death cult. Just about the entire cult offs themselves except for him and a few others. He becomes the only survivor of the cult and gets all these media deals, etc. Then he meets this woman who can see disasters in the future. Its a difficult plot to explain without giving anything away. -
QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ Mar 1, 2005 -> 10:30 PM) I'll give you one anyway. I was just yanking LCR's chain. Even sent him a PM telling him so. He never wrote back, though, so I think he may be mad at me. Or I may just be getting stupid s*** done like writing up a set of discussion questions regarding scenes from Family Guy for an educational psychology class presentation, paying my bills and doing a presentation for a social research method class regarding contraceptive use in Rwanda.

QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ Mar 1, 2005 -> 09:32 PM) Yeah, I'll bet you would. You'd start off by telling him that your 10-year-old brother logged onto soxtalk.com using your ID and posted all of that bad-mouthing. Pot. Meet. Kettle. For somebody yakking about the lack of accountability on the internet, somebody's got a real ax to grind here.

QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ Mar 1, 2005 -> 09:30 PM) That hasn't stopped 50 from killing people in the past. What's LCR going to tell the police when he's six feet under? Yes, I'm sure he'd throw everything that he's created (well moreso his record label which has commercialized and co-opted "hip hop") would let him do that. Keep thinking that. How old are you again?
-
QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ Mar 1, 2005 -> 09:26 PM) As long as he does it over the web and can't be held accountable for what he says. Put 50 Cent in his face and I guarantee that his nuts will shrivel up like raisins. Yes because I normally meet rap stars quite often since I'm always "in da club gettin' tipzy" And to paraphrase Mallrats, I'd have a lot of things to say to him. However, I don't think I could say it with enough monosyllabic words for him to understand it all.
-
QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ Mar 1, 2005 -> 09:16 PM) Uh, I don't think that the person who shot him was one of his "friends." Then again, they're all a bunch of black guys and they look all the same anyway, right? :rolly I was saying friends for the people that it would be who would beat me up if I did tell him that he was a hack in the first place. Do you own a pretzel factory cuz you're pretty good at twisting things like words... :rolly And funny how you didn't talk about the other part of my post and cherry picked the Hell out of it.
-
QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Mar 1, 2005 -> 04:44 PM) You didn't hear of him for a reason. The media/law enforcement has learned the err of their ways and don't give these psychos the air time they are looking for. Don't think for one second he didn't want to be known in every house across the nation. I think he did want to be known. I also think that it had something to do with him choosing the geographic location that he did. When people think of serial killers, they think of the ones from Chicago like Speck or the Boston Strangler or the Nightstalker from California etc...Nobody thinks of Witchita.

The only reason 50 is beefing with so many people on his new album is to sell more records & play out his image. Instead of letting his "lyrical talent" and beats sell records, he's resorting to the ever so sure to be hype on MTv to sell and promote his records for him. "OMG! Fiddy made funz of some guyz!!11!!1!" He's portraying an image. At least the Game isn't as much of an idiot to not take part in this infantile insults in the name of selling a few more records BS. /golfclap Its high school all over again. Instead of confronting the person you have a problem with, make fun of them behind their back & start rumors. Please, throw that s*** away. And Hurt, if he and his friends punch as well as they shoot each other, then I don't think I'd have too much to worry about.
-
Badger, that argument is terrible. 2Pac etc. are talented. I am singling out the hacks like 50 Cent who cruise on the "OMG! I am teh r0x0rs because I got shot 9 times!11111!!!!11!!" as some sort of credibility for his ability to make s***ty songs. I didn't say that I was more talented than 50. I simply said that comparatively to other rappers in his genre, his stuff is absolute flaming dog crap and he seems to be not talented at all...comparatively. But who needs talent when you have a thug image being promoted by videos, CDs, commercials, photo shoots and a giant monolithic record label to promote the Hell out of you forcing everybody to hear the song 287348723847234 times a day on the radio.
-
QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ Mar 1, 2005 -> 01:31 PM) Nothing wrong with your choice, but your dislike of gangsta rap doesn't make people like 50 Cent "talentless." I'd guess that, like most other people on this site (including myself), you would fail miserably if you even tried to put together a rap song. Hell, I'll even admit that Britney Spears has more musical talent than I do. At the very least, she can sing a hell of a lot better than I can. 50 is just another version of Vanilla Ice -- better packaged but still just another dancing monkey clapping the little cymbals for the organ grinder. He's got the "talent" to put on the image mask and go about it but can get by with a half-assed job of lyrics that could have been written by a young, horny child. I do have to say he writes his own songs (however badly and devoid of anything of probative value) unlike a lot of the pop morons paraded on TV. I like Eminem because he's gotten past the "Hey, I get lots of sex" and "Er'body in da club gettin' tipzy!!!11!1!" lyrics & makes songs that are personal reflections without playing so much to the prepackaged thug imagry.
-
Hurt, I'm also of the mind that the whiny pop artists like Chris Carrabba of Dashboard Confessional, etc. etc. etc. end up stealing their lyrics at gunpoint by going into a Dennys at 4 am and stealing the notebooks from teenage girls that are so goth and depressed they s*** bats. Excuse me if I like grown adults not writing songs that sound lyrically like they came out of a freshman in high school. Vanilla Ice was also able to get up and make an ass out of himsel--er, perform his routine. That doesn't mean he has musical talent. I mean, he ripped off "Under Pressure" from Queen for f***'s sake. And Soxbadger, there is a difference between a sonnet and: I take you to the candy shop I'll let you lick the lollypop Go 'head girl, don't you stop Keep going 'til you hit the spot What deep, thought provoking lyrics! It's not like other bands don't have the lyrical "talent" (used very loosely with 50 Cent lyrics) to make these songs, most bands just avoid them because they are crap.

QUOTE(SoxFanForever @ Mar 1, 2005 -> 12:03 PM) How come you don't have For a Few Dollars More on your movie watch list but you have the other two movies? What gives Haha, I just haven't gotten around to watching it yet. Too much BS school busywork.

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Mar 1, 2005 -> 11:30 AM) :headshake I wish every terrorist and politician would drop off the face of this Earth, but then what would you have to talk about? Anybody know (Flippedoutpunk?) why The Game is getting dropped so soon? 50 Cent is an idiot who is only alive because somebody else was an incompetent idiot & missed the mark when he tried shooting him. Getting shot a bunch of times is not "cred", it's being a f***ing idiot to put yourself into a position where you would get shot. He's not a lyrical genius. I'm sure an 8 year old with Downs could write the lyrics for an entire 50 Cent album. At least 2Pac put time into lyrics and had some significant songs with good lyrics that have insight. As for why the Game is getting kicked out -- 50 told Flex he was disappointed with comments Game made on the station Saturday night, when Game revealed he would not be getting involved in the beefs 50 is stirring up with "Piggy Bank" (see "50 Cent's LP Pushed Up, Harsh 'Facts' Sound Like Disses On Leaked 'Piggy Bank'" on MTV.com). According to Flex, Game even said he was going to do a song with Nas. "He's gone," 50 scoffed. "He might as well make the record." 50 also said Game should stop saying "G-Unit." "He thinks he's doing me a favor when he says that."

I don't know about most of you but I hadn't heard of BTK until he got the media push the last month or so. You kinda have to wonder, egomaniac that the guy is trying to get attention, that he seems to feel sort of cheated. I mean if he did this in LA or NYC, he'd be all over the news and be a huge name a la the Nightstalker, Ted Bundy and the rest of the sociopaths.
-
QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ Mar 1, 2005 -> 08:53 AM) Well, the "hack" label is in the eye of the beholder, as 50 Cent is pretty damn talented. But I agree that this behavior is completely idiotic. He parades getting shot a bazillion times as some sort of achievement. Newsflash -- you're not supposed to get f***ing shot! And I'm pretty sure that the Beatles could have written "P.I.M.P." And I'm not one of the people who just hates rap -- I just hate idiotic rap tunes that could have been written by a 9 year old.
-
Hopefully they'll do us all a favor and kill each other since they are a bunch of idiot hacks.
