This day rules. I love cruising Green St. on campus watching all the depressed single people getting more hammered than Christ on the cross while watching the guys trying way to hard to get into their girlfriend's pants by being way too cliche regarding the holiday as being "really important". Its just another arbitrary day of crass commercialism and consumerism on which people are supposed to again buy into the mantra of "buying = loving". And no, I'm not a bitter romantic, I'm actually of the mind that romance etc. is based more on being spontaneous, surprising and unique instead of having a prescribed day on which its almost forced to do such things. Telling people you care about them should be any day instead of this one day thing without having to buy s*** to show affection /big fan of homemade dinners, haha And also, since its really a Catholic saint day, shouldn't we more accurately reflect the intentions of the Catholic Church and celebrate it with 8 year old boys? /1waytickettohell

QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ Feb 14, 2005 -> 11:21 AM) FWIW, I don't support Lieberman's crusade against the media. But, let me guess: You think it's OK for someone like Ward Churchill to insult the families of the 9/11 victims, right? I'm sorry, but freedom of speech doesn't equate to freedom from responsiblity. And I hope that terrorist-loving asshole Churchill gets fired. There's a difference between his writings outside the classroom & what he says in the classroom. I know that Campus Watch (a Daniel Pipes run organization -- far right wing, mostly focused on a very pro-Israel bent) has been trying to get professors fired for such things as saying in a class "We need to understand why they hate us because 'they hate our freedom' is not a correct answer." I think that he does have the free speech right to say whatever he thinks. I mean on the UIUC campus, we have a professor who actually said in a speaking engagement that he was at that "Global capitalism needs to spread around the world so we can modernize the Muslim heathens." While questioning his rhetoric & being an idiot for saying it, I do not think that he needs to be fired for such utterances that took place out of the classroom setting. I've learned a lot about the UIUC campus in regards to academic freedom throughout the school's history (had a class on civil liberties and political tolerance last semester -- really interesting stuff from all sides) During World War I, economics professors here had problems because they refused to spend money on war bonds while speaking out against US interventionalism and they were almost dismissed from the University for it. I'm of the mind that if a person can back up their commentary then it is fine for them to say something on a topic and still keep their job in school, especially if the utterance takes place outside the classroom walls. Just because something is insulting, it does not mean that a person should lose their job over it -- especially if the utterance did not take place in their job setting. And FWIW, Churchill does do an excellent job in his FOIA attempts regarding the COINTELPRO programs if anybody is interested from a historical perspective.

QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ Feb 14, 2005 -> 10:53 AM) So, should Al Jazeera be allowed to get away with calling Bush a "Zionist" after he names Lieberman to his cabinet? Or would that infringe on their right to free speech? :rolly Who's to decide what's "lewd" -- and also how can a word be inherently "dirty"? If one asserts that there are "dirty" words then there must be a way to "clean" them up, right? What's "lewd" to one person could be downright hilarious to another person (see the obscenity trials of Lenny Bruce for further information) The best part about music and concerts is that if you don't want to hear what the band/person is going to say -- you don't have to listen to it. The fact that Lieberman and his pro-censorship ilk are trying to take the decision making out of the parents' hands, bloating the government with tasks that it could never feasibly perform and creating a Big Brother-esque society where the government decides what people can and cannot listen to is quite scary to me as a proponent of civil liberties and the Constitutional republic. Put decisions in the hands of the parents rather than a cabal of governmental authorities who think they know what is best for people. Let a free market decide what is of value and what isn't instead of moralist crusaders looking to censor things. And the best part about news programs is that they can say whatever they want. Just like O'Reilly claiming that the Paris Business Review said that the Factor's boycott cost France millions -- except imports from France have increased since the war and also [and more importantly] there is no such magazine known as the Paris Business Review source: http://mediamatters.org/items/200405020006

QUOTE(El Piervizdyeguchansodnik @ Feb 14, 2005 -> 10:11 AM) I could care less about his music. He's a jackass for what he said to the media about him being the best and him being who should have won best new artist instead of that country girl. When you're so full of yourself like that, you deserve nothing, in my opinion. Gretchen Wilson >>>>>>>>>> Kanye West Kanye West isn't going to bring back rap. Rap and hip hop used to be about actual issues etc. (read: NWA, Run DMC etc.) but they've just become "Bling bling / b****es and ho's / Look at my SUV / I'm closing the studio because you didn't get me my cheesecake". And in the words of Mack Lindsay: There are many threats to our ecological environment. However I think the most imminent of all of them is Puff Daddy. He, like other rap moguls, serves the music industry oligopoly through subsidized record labels and likes to put SUVs in his video. Throwing a dope MC in the driver's seat gives the impression that these are very cool to drive. Encouraging mass consumption of the sports utility vehicle increases mass production of sulphur dioxide - acid rain. Don't get me wrong, Escalades are very sweet. But you know what else is kinda tight? Trees. Oxygen. Breathing. The environment.

Anything that gets Joe "We need to censor bands I don't like" Lieberman out of Congress. He's one of the idiots that thought Marilyn Manson's lyrics were behind the Columbine attacks. He, Clinton and Gore (who Tipper still has by the balls) even toyed around with the idea of setting up an advisory council to preview *live* concerts to make sure that they would not be what they considered "lewd" & if they were, then the band would not get a permit. Any band performing in a venue without an issued permit could be subject to arrest. f*** him. He's a jackbooted little thug. /hates Joe and his Joementum

QUOTE(Spod=Ratings @ Feb 14, 2005 -> 12:15 AM) never saw it how many stars you give it Definitely better than the old Dolph Lundgren one ::shudder:: It was nice that they stayed true for the most part to the Garth Ennis story for when he was writing Punisher. IMDB gives it a 6.2/10 which is what I'd give it about. As a huge fan of the comic the Punisher, I liked the movie a lot. It left me lacking a little bit but it was a solid film.

http://www.pamspaulding.com/weblog/2005/02...kicked-her.html Maya is the daughter of wingnut supreme (and the doormat Barack Obama wiped his feet on before heading to the Senate) Alan Keyes. Oliver Willis points out that Maya has officially come out of the closet, and her family kicked her out. So much for compassionate conservatism. But remember, only gay parents raise gay kids

http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/meast/02/12/...fire/index.html But then this "Oops" happened... 1. Peace summit arranged in Egypt between Sharon and Abbas. 2. On the morning of February 7, a day before the summit is to start, Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz told Israel Army Radio that he had received intelligence warnings that some militants, including Hezbollah, may try to disrupt the summit. 3. Due to the intelligence warnings, Israel Police moved to a level III heightened alert status, one level below a state-of-emergency. 4. Like clockwork, on the afternoon of February 7, rockets rained down on the northern Israeli town of Nahariya, and were immediately described by Israeli police as Katyusha rockets fired by Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon. 5. Later in the same day, the attack was described as the result of 'human error' involving a failed test by an Israeli weapons manufacturer in the area. It was made clear - some might say too clear - that although the failed test took place on an IDF firing range and was by a weapons company closely associated with the IDF, the IDF had nothing to do with it. Only problem was that it wasn't Hizbollah -- the bogus IDF reports that missiles were shot from Lebanon by Hizbollah guerillas are at odds with the whistleblowers in the IDF http://www.israelnn.com/news.php3?id=76554 " Military sources are reporting they did not detect any rocket launch from southern Lebanon." -- So, why when it happened, did the IDF say that there were missiles fired from Lebanon by Hizbollah? I really doubt they are that damn stupid.

I just got done watching Sanjuro (1962). The story is so fun to watch and it just draws you in for the entire time. Definite watch if you're a fan of Kurosawa, Mifune or samurai films with a plot.

Terps Sweep Duke
LowerCaseRepublican replied to LowerCaseRepublican's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Feb 13, 2005 -> 11:46 AM) Yeah ESPN is hilarious, poor poor JJ getting made fun of while he talks s*** on the court and showboats after every shot. Apparently he can give it, but certainly can't take it. How ironic is it for a DUKE player to be complaining about fan's lack of class, this coming from a fanbase that chanted "where's your daddy?" to Steve Kerr after Kerr's father was tragically killed not long before the game. I almost lost it laughing when he started reading that poetry on the Eastern Seaboard Promo Network. -
Terps Sweep Duke
LowerCaseRepublican replied to LowerCaseRepublican's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
And for all those that may not know, the reason this is amazing is because this is the first time in 10 years that the team has swept Duke in the regular season. -
Flip Saunders fired.
LowerCaseRepublican replied to WilliamTell's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
But now how is Flip going to feed his family? /obvious? -
So, I was thinking about teams with heart taking down teams with talent. Duke has more talent, more depth, and a better overall team on paper. But that doesn't matter since an unranked Maryland beat Duke. And Butter, where was Duke's heart tonight? That's gotta suck to get swept by an unranked team that is probably gonna be able to coast simply on the sweep of Duke into a spot in the NCAA tournament.

What would you change.....
LowerCaseRepublican replied to LosMediasBlancas's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
What I would do was said by Hunter S. Thompson in a past Page 2 article... http://www.dalecruse.com/weblogarchives/20...er_thompson.htm ELIMINATE THE PITCHER: This will knock at least one hour off the length of a game, which is now up to 3:42. One World Series game took five hours and 20 minutes, which is unacceptable to everybody except the Pitchers. Yes. … So we will ELIMINATE THE PITCHERS, and they won’t be missed. Pitchers, as a group, are pampered little swine with too much money and no real effect on the game except to drag it out and interrupt the action. LIMIT ALL GAMES TO THREE (3) HOURS: Like football and basketball and hockey, the Baseball game will end at a fixed time. THE SCORE, at that moment, WILL BE FINAL, based on an accumulation of TOTAL BASES IN 3 hours. ALL BASE-RUNNERS MAY RUN TO ANY BASE (but not backward): — First to Third, Second to Home, etc. And with NO PITCHER in the game, this frantic scrambling across the infield will be Feasible and Tempting. ALL “PITCHING”, by the way, will be done by a fine-tuned PITCHING MACHINE that pops up out of the mound, delivers a remote-controlled “pitch” at the batter, and then drops back out of sight, to free up the whole infield for running. … If a batter hits a home run with the bases loaded, for instance, his team will score 16 total bases (or 16 points). But, if it’s 3 up and 3 down in an inning, that team will score Zero points. Think of 22-5, perhaps, or 88-55. Yes sir, we will have Huge scores and constant speedy action for three straight hours. The heroes of the game will be CATCHERS, not Pitchers. The CATCHER will dominate the game and be the highest-paid player. … With no Pitcher and no Mound to disrupt the flow, runners on base will be moving at the crack of the bat, and it will be the catcher’s job to shut them down or pick them off whenever possible. Foot-speed and a bazooka throwing arm will be paramount. … There will be no more of this bull about Bullpens and Managers scratching their heads on TV for hours on end, no more lame pick-off throws to first, no more waving off signs and agonized close-ups while pop fouls bounce off the roof. No, there will be no such thing as a base on balls. Each batter will get five “pitches” from the robot — only FIVE (5) and if he doesn’t get a hit by then, he is Out. … And the CATCHER will control the kind of drop or curve or speed he wants the machine to throw. And it will obey. Those damn pitching machines can put a Slider past you at 98 miles an hour five times in a row, with no problem. They can throw hideous wavering knuckleballs and half-moon curves — all depending and according to what the CATCHER wants to dial up on his remote-control unit. He can even order that the batter be whacked in the ribs by a 102-mph fastball, although that will cost his team TWO (2) bases, instead of one. And you won’t want to have some poor Cuban drilled in the ribs when you’re nursing a 31-30 lead. OK, folks, that’s it for now. I am already late, and I have written too many words — but the Concept is sound, I think, and there is a clear and desperate Need for it. … Next spring ESPN will put my theories to the test by sponsoring a series of “New Rules” baseball games in New York, Chicago, Omaha and Seattle, among others. …Tickets will be sold and big-time sports talent will be employed. The success or failure of these Games will determine the fate of Baseball in America. Purists will b**** and whine, but so what? Purists will Always b**** and whine. That is their function. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Feb 11, 2005 -> 04:54 PM) Canseco is a grade A asshole. I'm completely against Roids, but the only reason he's doing this is so his piece of s*** self can make some money on his book. f*** Jose, and I'm boycotting his book. The guys just throwing out accusations. He can kiss my ass. Exactly. f*** Canseco. He's just trying to boost sales of his book throwing out more names that he's pulling out of his ass. If he's got direct evidence of Player X, Y and Z using steroids then say so. But don't give the bulls*** of "I think he did..." and then proclaim that he did with no evidence to back the claim up. All this steroid talk and naming of random names reminds me of one thing... Are you or have you ever been a member of the Commun--er, a user of steroids? -

http://rawstoryq.com/news/2005/index.php?p=4 "I don't support an amendment to the Constitution banning gay marriage." -- Lynne Cheney Well, its nice to see her having some sort of morals and respect for the Constitution since the main thrust of this administration so far has been to s*** all over it.
