I started a personal goal to read two to three books per month. So far in 2007, I've read: The Joke's Over Ralph Steadman: Fun book from Steadman's perspective about what it was like to be with HST during all the craziness of three decades of booze/drug fueled Gonzo writing. Autobiography of Malcolm X - Malcolm X: Really interesting book about a major civil/human rights leader in American history. Screwjack - Hunter S. Thompson: A few HST short stories. Passionate Declarations - Howard Zinn: Zinn is awesome for issues based history and is very inspiring for a real, substantive coverage of history. Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim - David Sedaris: Ah, Sedaris and humor. Laughs guaranteed. The Massacre at El Mozote - Mark Danner: A massacre in El Salvador that became a microcasm of the Cold War. Catch-22 - Joseph Heller: Holy crap. I can't believe I never read this book before in my life. I could not put it down. Heller's dark sarcasm and points were incredible. Shame of the Nation - Jonathan Kozol: If you think Brown v. Board did a lot to fix apartheid education in America, think again. Kozol challenges educators and the public to get serious about the very obvious apartheid education in America and the funding disparities in American schools. Currently, I'm reading Mao by Jung Chang. I am not incredibly well versed in Chinese history so I figured it'd be a good read. She really does an excellent job with the work making it interesting to read and also truly covering the horrors of the Chairman. So...what are you all reading?

QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Apr 6, 2007 -> 08:16 PM) If I owned a nice restaurant and this guy was setting up out front or next to my building, feeding homeless people, I would be plenty pissed and would call the police. Don't they have soup kitchens, or churches out there that do this sort of thing? The thing is that the law states that any charity can only get two permits per calendar year so that puts a big crimp in any sustained volunteer feeding program.

QUOTE(Alpha Dog @ Apr 6, 2007 -> 07:35 PM) If you happened to be 17, and having sex with your 17 year old girlfriend, you could be jailed as a sex offender. Just remember, there are some people who get this classification that don't really deserve it. Most do, though, and I have no problem with them having a tough life. This is indeed true about the classification being very broad for people that aren't necessarily kiddy diddlers. There is a major difference between the case you mentioned and the kind like the perv "Let me put a blindfold on multiple second graders and have them play 'tasting games'!"teacher at Thomas Paine Elementary around here in Urbana. I'd prefer some sort of halfway house or controlled social setting for them upon their release. Making them homeless transients doesn't do anything to help anybody. If the government spent the time not only tracking them for notification purposes but also for medical (both medicine and psychological counseling) help purposes, then things would not only still be controlled for safety purposes but be much more humane.

QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ Apr 6, 2007 -> 12:18 PM) There are two ways to look at this. 1) Nice walking around feeding people 2) Guy sets up shop in high rent / highly visable area that attracts destitute people where business suffers because of type of crowd. Sorry but homeless people do not attract the crowd which spends money. This is all about business. If the guy wants to feed the homeless, follow the laws set in place. Yeah, cuz homeless people only need to eat two times a year. (as per the edict that a group can only get two permits a year) That law is inherently flawed by not allowing the public to perform a beneficial public service. The idea that the almighty dollar trumps people eating is absolutely ridiculous. I just get reminded of a piece from Eugene Debs' 1908 speech: "Now my friends, I am opposed to the system of society in which we live today, not because I lack the natural equipment to do for myself but because I am not satisfied to make myself comfortable knowing that there are thousands of my fellow men who suffer for the barest necessities of life. We were taught under the old ethic that man's business on this earth was to look out for himself. That was the ethic of the jungle; the ethic of the wild beast. Take care of yourself, no matter what may become of your fellow man. Thousands of years ago the question was asked; ''Am I my brother's keeper?'' That question has never yet been answered in a way that is satisfactory to civilized society. Yes, I am my brother's keeper. I am under a moral obligation to him that is inspired, not by any maudlin sentimentality but by the higher duty I owe myself. What would you think me if I were capable of seating myself at a table and gorging myself with food and saw about me the children of my fellow beings starving to death."

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Apr 6, 2007 -> 11:11 AM) I've seen that before. It's like the Scott Steiner show. I swear he's in 1/3 of the clips. Which one is the Hayabusa one? And what exactly happened? From Wiki: In October 2001, Hayabusa suffered an injury during a match against Mammoth Sasaki while attempting a springboard moonsault. His foot caught the ropes and he landed on his head, paralyzing him. The injury also provoked a very high fever and Hayabusa required surgery. Hayabusa was considered the heart and soul of FMW, and after his departure FMW slowly folded. In the meantime, Ezaki has been pursuing a career as a singer and usually appears in a wheelchair, although he is able to walk with the help of a cane. -

QUOTE(Texsox @ Apr 5, 2007 -> 05:44 PM) MIAMI, Florida (Reuters) -- Police have arrested an activist for feeding the homeless in downtown Orlando, Florida. Eric Montanez, 21, of the charity group Food Not Bombs was charged with violating a controversial law against feeding large groups of destitute people in the city center, police said Thursday. Montanez was filmed by undercover officers Wednesday as he served "30 unidentified persons food from a large pot utilizing a ladle," according to an arrest affidavit. The Orlando area is home to Disney World and Universal Studios Florida. The Orlando law, which is supported by local business owners who say the homeless drive away customers but has been challenged in court by civil rights groups, allows charities to feed more than 25 people at a time within two miles (3.2 kilometers) of Orlando City Hall only if they have a special permit. They can get two permits a year. Police collected a vial of the stew Montanez was serving as evidence. Police spokeswoman Barbara Jones said in an e-mail it was the first time anyone had been arrested under the feeding ban. Montanez was charged with a misdemeanor. A ladel? *gasp* A vial of stew?! *ohmyijustsharted* This has got to be one of the dumbest laws ever. /remembers about the old saying that the people vote for what they want and deserve to get it good and hard.

"History is not a vehicle for promoting political correctness. Children must have access to knowledge of these controversial subjects, whether palatable or unpalatable." Ding ding ding. Covering things that are truthful but can make people uncomfortable (i.e. from my own experience -- our covering of the Mexican-American war and discussing a lot of the racism related to that issue in class) is essential. The idea of not teaching historical events is absolutely laughable. -
I just wanna get from 145-148 to about 170 and not have it look like I've got a small alien baby incubating in my gut. My hopeful goal was to have it all done or good progress done on it by the start of the academic school year. I've been eating healthy and taking in two to three protein shakes a day (40 g each) plus eating lots of poultry (and carbs about an hour after I work out in the morning) and other high protein stuff (i.e. cottage cheese since it was on sale for dirt cheap this week during grocery shopping time) I decided to do my morning workouts three times a week and hitting them hard. I really like the morning ones especially during the week because it gets me going and energetic in the mornings. My dream is to have it be extra muscle, not in the bodybuilder really big stuff but just to be a bit bigger stature-wise (especially in chest and biceps/triceps) rather than the 145 that I am. I'm fairly cut right now but want to keep that and just be about 20-25 lbs. larger, haha.

Yay! Mark Briscoe is still in the hospital with a severe concussion and is undergoing further neurological testing for his botched SSP. -
QUOTE(Shadows @ Mar 31, 2007 -> 09:15 PM) Did you not get my PM? I basically said everything that was posted in here I did read your PM. I was looking for like product recommendations etc. Cuz in a GNC type store, I am more confused than a baby at a topless bar. I haven't been doing much cardio cuz I know that burns an assload of calories and I've already got a high metabolism. I've focused mostly on weight training stuff (lighter stuff in the morning and/or using my own body's resistance) and more gym heavy weights after work in the afternoon.
